It was only a matter of time until they found something else to whine about... usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/10/15/14376005-no-ged-some-undocumented-immigrants-hit-barriers-in-quest-for-legal-status?lite&ocid=msnhp“I want to be enrolled in school, but I can’t find a way … I’m trying my hardest,” said Diaz, who was unable to finish school after giving birth to her son and wants to return." Wow, four to six years later she gets it, really? So the timing is a complete coincidence... "Others feel it is unfair to set a requirement for some in the group that could be insurmountable." Let the games begin... The quote I love best is in the comments section...along the lines of "The more we lower the bar the more will try to crawl under it".

I'm bothered by the fact that they are offering to let them take the test in Spanish. This program was supposed to be for those children who were born here or brought here by their illegal parents. If they have been here long enough to qualify for the program they should also be able to speak English proficiently.

I am bothered by the fact that GED prep courses cost $4000. What a way to take advantage of a situation.

a state law effectively prohibits undocumented(eta; illegal) immigrants from taking the free courses. One school told her a one-year program would cost her $4,000, which was way beyond her means.
that one school's cost up to 4k. it doesn't say all cost that much. and illegals shouldn't be able to get them anyway.
how much did she pay to sneak into the country? that wasn't beyond her means and that was in the old country.
looks like ged prep course can be had for free for citizens.

No, all may not cost that much, she may be able to get a class for $3500. Same as with these for-profit colleges where they charge an arm and a leg for CNA classes and the Red Cross gives them for $1250.00. Hopefully, some of the churches get involved in order to help those pass the classes.

Look, if you are here illegally, you are not an undocumented worker, you are not an illegal immigrant...that would imply that you immigrated, you are an illegal alien.
No tax dollars to support anything, no nothing, go back home and do it legally. That simple. Then we are all on the same page.
Of course American companies, large and small are addicted to cheap labor. When that changes, everything else follows.

Dems are addicted to sugar plum visions of large numbers of grateful new voters... It would be best to 'commit' them to a cold-turkey withdrawal shock...

A GED prep course? Really? I dropped out of 9th grade after 12 weeks, so I basically have an eighth grade education and I had no problem taking the GED test without doing any prep at all.
If you really need some extra help go to the library. They probably have a copy of a GED test prep book. It's free.

Um, they did immigrate, just not legally. my dad's green card says "resident alien" across the top. go ahead and call him illegal, I'll find a way to reach through my computer screen. please get your terminology straight. I agree with the rest of your post, though... sent from my electronic distraction

I am bothered by the fact that GED prep courses cost $4000. What a way to take advantage of a situation. The high school district I work for, provides free GED prep classes to anyone who walks through the adult school doors. I know for a fact that many of those who receive free adult education at our adult school are illegal immigrants. These programs are funded by tax payers and anyone can enjoy these benefits regardless of legal status.

If you really need some extra help go to the library. They probably have a copy of a GED test prep book. It's free. One of my volunteer jobs is as a GED math teacher. The young kids and young adults I work with need more help than they can get in a library. (And my help is free!) The fact that you didn't need any help doesn't mean others do not!

While I support a pathway to citizenship for individuals brought to this country as children who have shown over the years that they have the qualities we want in our citizens, I do not support including those who are only now attempting to meet some minimal standard which would allow them to stay.

We've got 312,000,000 citizens already... We can't even keep employed and properly fed and schooled and healthy, those we already have... We won't need another 6,000,000 to 12,000,000 anytime soon, I expect... Full-up... Time to hang-out the 'No Vacancy' sign for a while, as we deal with bigger problems of our own...

I don't like the bait-and-switch.
You can earn legal residency status if you get an education! Just kidding - there is no affordable way for you to get that education! Hahahaha! Fooled you! Let me take this opportunity to give you a lecture on self-deportation...
That's a cruddy system.
The program didn't exist when people who are trying to taked GED classes were dropping out of high school. If the only option you had available to you was to live on the fringes of society working as a laborer because you were undocumented, then a high school education probably seemed like an unnecessary luxury. Now that you have different options available to you, we won't actually let you change course?
It's a bad deal. I'm in favor of helping people finish high school. I know others think we should just deport everyone. But either way, I think we need to stop pretending there is this path if we aren't actually going to make it a feasible option for folks.

Good. Getting rid of the illegals by not employing them, educating them, feeding and housing them, is the easiest way to end the influx of illegals.

But, yeah, if I had to take the GED in a foreign language, I'd fail, too. So they don't know or speak English after being here for how many years? Tough. I've seen the GED and although I think it'd be easier to stay in high school than take it, it's not that hard to pass. But you do have to have some brains.

Another alternative would be to allow any illegal immigrant apologist to give up their spot in the USA and be replaced with an illegal of their choice. Talk about your win/win scenario.

There is no Bait and Switch, period. The Presidents plan was for those who had completed their eduction or served in the Arm Forces to receive the 2 year deferral, NOT for those who dropped out of school to get an easy way to stay. Had they stayed in school and completed the graduation requirements then yes let them stay, giving them a way to game the system then NO.

We owe them respect for their inherent dignity and value as human beings. We owe them respect for the basic human rights afforded to all persons. We owe it to them to treat them in a manner consistent with American laws and values, starting with due process under the law. We owe them honesty about our laws and about their options under those laws.

I don't like the bait-and-switch. You can earn legal residency status if you get an education! Just kidding - there is no affordable way for you to get that education! First off, there is no 'bait and switch'. If they had stayed in the tax-payer funded 'free' school system and not dropped out, they would have received the proper education to get the high school diploma. A GED is not education. It just says you passed a equivalency test. It blows my mind that some people say that the GED should be offered in Spanish. Uh, how about a huge HELL NO! If they've been here long enough to drop out and still be eligible for the program, perhaps they should have learned English. And before anyone gets on my back about not liking immigrants, that is blatantly false. My great grandparents immigrated here LEGALLY from Europe after waiting to get their documents. While waiting to come here, they started to learn English. When they got here, they forbade themselves or their kids to speak the 'old language' and in two of my eight great grandparents case, they changed their last names to 'Americanize' them/make them easier to say here.

Respectfully, of course... ;D They have no options. They have broken our laws. They are trespassers. They are invaders here in their millions. And they need to go home. One need look no further than the immigration laws of Mexico and other South American countries to know that we are far more lenient with OUR Illegal Aliens than THEY are with THEIRS. Enough of this footing around. It's getting close to time to play the Self-Deportation Card - and it will be a game-changer... long-overdue and most welcome.
