I might be up there for a week long training deal in the not too distant future. Don't have dates yet. I'll be in the Lake Saint Louis area, and would appreciate any tips on what to see and where to go.

Nobody huh. Indianapolis, Chicago, and Kansas City look relatively close on a map. Worth staying for a day or two to check one of those out?

Well, if you are there, then I would definately check out the Arch, get some italian food on The Hill, the Science Center is pretty neat (and free)....everything else I think of in StL is geared towards kids. I'm trying to remember what I did in college when I visited - Blues game (that's out), Cards Game (probably out), shopping (nothing too special really). Cahokia Mounds is considered a big deal (although I have never in my life stopped and seen it).
Chicago is a 5hr trip, KC is 4hrs, Indy is 4hrs+. So, that is really going to depend on your extra time.

I have relatives in St. Louis and have visited fairly frequently in the past few years. The art museum is small but very nice. It has a respectable range of collections for such a small museum, and everything was very well presented. Grant's Farm is a sort of wildlife preserve surrounding the birthplace of Ulysses S. Grant, which is another attraction. Right next to that used to be a facility where the Anheueser Busch Clydesdales were bred and the foals raised, which was open to the public and you could pet the baby Clydesdales, but I believe that has been merged with their facility in Kentucky, so I don't think you can pet the baby Clydesdales any more, which is a pity because it was fun to pet the baby Clydesdales. Then there's Ted Drewes Frozen Custard Stand on old Rt. 66, which is some kind of landmark and has really good frozen custard. Yum. The area around Grant's Farm is very pleasant and there is a walking/biking trail that is very popular.
I'm going to St. Louis the first week fo October, but it's for the final interment of my parents and cousin in the ancestral plot in southern Illinois, so I won't likely have an opportunity to check out any recreational opportunities. If I notice anything promising, though, I'll make a note of it and post a comment if I remember.

Forest Park is nice - good zoo - art museum. Go to the West End shopping. Get ready for this one - bowling hall of fame is near Busch Stadium. Union Station is a great train station converted to a mall. Laclede's landing has some good food. You can go to grants farm outside of the city to see where the Clydesdales live.

Tdog, I think the Clydesdales don't live there anymore. The last time I visited farm to pet the baby Clydesdales, we were told they were getting ready to move everything to their facility in Kentucky. They might have changed their minds though. I hope so. I'd like to pet the baby Clydesdales again.

Well, its been a while since I was in StL. so my Grant's Farm info could be outdated for sure. Sroo...I remember the drive to Chicago as much longer than 2 hours, more like 4-5 hours.

It's about 4 hours from Indianapolis to St. Louis. It's not a bad drive. The last time I drove through Indy, though, most of the highway around the airport was under construction.

They might have changed their plans. I haven't been to Grant's farm for a couple of years, so don't know for sure myself other than what we were told when we visited last. Grant's farm itself, though, is worth the visit. There are wildebeests.

I was there last week, I drove instead of flying, but everyone said the construction is still active. That's good to know, Sroo. Makes me even happier that I decided to take the train this time instead of driving.

How fast are you driving? 2hrs gets you to Lincoln with no stops which is maybe halfway (I get off at Bloomington to go see my parents, I never drive all the way to Chicago).

I drive through Indy about once a year as I have relatives that live north of there. I can't ever remember roads NOT being under construction!

Heh. I couldn't resist looking to see if the Royal Dumpe on 2nd Street was still in operation. It is (surprisingly, after over 20 years!). It's a medieval-themed dinner theater that used to be great for a fun evening out. Don't know what it's like these days, though.

KC is fun, but probably more fun in spring/summer/early fall. The Power & Light District is pretty cool (they do a ton of free concerts in the summer there), with good bars and places to eat. The Nelson Atkins Museum in KC is one of my favorites. The Waldo or Brookside area has good food and bars. Tons of great barbecue options.
I haven't been to St. Louis in a few years, but the Arch is worth doing if you haven't been before. Also recommend a Cardinals game if it's still baseball season when you go, but sounds like it won't be.
Chicago always has tons to do. Shedd's Aquarium, The Field Museum (love the dinosaur bones), Navy Pier, Giordano's pizza (yum!), and the Mag Mile are all fun. I don't recommend going to the top of the Sears Tower (or whatever it's called now) - not worth the ridiculous line to get to the top!

Isn't there some legendary pie place in or near St. Louis? They sell like 30 flavors of pie each day -- each handmade? And they ship? ;D
Yup, an excursion to Chicago would be more than a one day trip -- figure 4-5 hours each way driving on a good day.

I will be going there on November 11 for a Paul McCartney concert.
The Bowling Hall of Fame has moved to Arlington, TX, which disappoints me greatly. I visited it the last time I was there on business and all of my co-workers laughed at me. Hey, my dad is in the Hall of Fame and I wanted to see it. The Bowling Hall of Fame moved in 2008.

I used to live in STL. Go to the Loop, it's pretty cool. Forest Park is a nice place to jog. The City Museum is a once in a lifetime experience. Eat Italian food on the Hill, go to Fast Eddies in Alton, Hacienda for Mexican food. See the beloved cardinals if you can, rams or blues if you can't. It's a good city filled with good people.
Oh and go to Ted Drewes but don't get pizza at Imo's (STL tradition that's a definate acquired taste).

For soft serve "ice cream", I liked Fritz's over Ted Drewes.

No, Dark, do not go to East Stl!! Well, unless you are carrying. You can tour the Budwiser brewery and get some free beer. There are some fun eclectic bars down in that area too. I keep forgetting the name of the one with all the random mosaics....anyone know what I am talking about? For KC, we have the places listed above. P&L is not really my scene - but Westport and Waldo/Brookside are nice. And Oklahoma Joes is probably the best BBQ ever. Just go prepared to get takeout as its attached to a gas station and there's hardly any seating. But the line starts at 11am and wraps around the building with everyone trying to get some great food before they run out. Will it just be you, or are Loop & the girls tagging along?

I say try the Arch in STL. There are also Clydesdales at the Budweiser plant. It's a decent tour too.

You must be much younger than I. I don't think I've been to Westport in years! I also stay away from P&L.
It's good, but definitely not the best by any means. I can think of a few places that I'd rather have BBQ from.

I live in Saint Louis. Lake St. Louis is pretty far but if you will have a car then it should be no problem to get around.
"Time to KC...2-3 hours Time to Chicago... I am remembering about 2 hours (although it could be less, I just hate driving through Illinois Time to Indy...No clue. "
KC is about 4 hours, Chicago 4-5 hours, Indy I think i 4-5 hours.
It is pretty much what everybody else said, Anheuser Busch tour (the give free beer at the end), Grant's Farm (they give beer at the end), the zoo, Central West End (for bars, sitting outside), the Arch, a whole bunch of casinos (Ameristar, Harrah's, Lumiere, River City, etc)... Sure you could go to the east side as suggested but just so you know it has been in top 3 for quite a few years now for the most dangerous cities. The Landing (by the Arch) has bunch of bars (but it was only fun when I was in my 20s). I can't think of anything else right now.
