So he's a jackass, and the business has high turnover. I wonder if those two things are related? No, they can't be............

Taxman- true emergency? Only a handful of people have keys to the lunchroom. They could easily waste 10 minutes trying to track down someone to unlock the door. In the case of most emergencies I don't imagine people have an extra 10 minutes to wander around trying to find someone with a key. who works there? toddlers?? I've never seen anyone have a "bathroom emergency" who wasn't still wearing pull-ups. Must not have ever worked with pregnant women. My first trimester I was sick with morning sickness. Didn't vomit much but often went to the bathroom thinking I would vomit. The second trimester was more interesting because I felt fabulous and then suddenly and without warning would have to vomit - and immediately feel fabulous again. Seriously, I had to vomit out my car window once - while driving - because I was stuck in traffic on a bridge. You lock the bathroom door on me, you would get a cascade of puke down it. And that has lawsuit written all over it.

I hired someone yesterday who used to be a temp here. She has type one diabetes and checks her blood sugar several times a day. She will take a little break like 3 minutes maybe to eat something besides testing. Knowing this I hired her anyhow with the understanding if she needs a little break she should take one. She has an insulin pump so doesn't need to shoot up at work but if she did she wouldn't want to do it in front of people.
Besides the pregnant women post menopausal women might need to go more often or more urgently and women on that time of month might need to deal with that anytime.

My supervisor has crohn's disease and had a personal bathroom build in her office because she often has bathroom emergencies. I am actually thankful she did this as my office shares a wall with the office bathroom (I work in a small office) and I often hear more of what goes on in the bathroom than I wish

In Catholic grammar school back in the 1950, the nuns didn't allow the students back into the school to use the rest rooms during lunch recess. They had to wait until recess was over.
One little first grade girl really, really had to use the rest room. The nuns would not allow it. Only when the little girl, crying in the middle of the school yard, lost control of her bowel movement and it ran down her legs did a nun usher her into the school to clean her up.
Her mother took her out of the school the next day and we never saw her again.
Now imagine that happening to an employee and its repercussions.

Locking the door makes people more inefficient. I know if I worked there and the 10am break came along, I'd leave to use the bathroom even if I didn't feel like it because I'd want to prevent an 11am emergency. Likewise I'd use it again at noon and 2pm (or whatever). So instead of using it when needed (which may only be 2-3 times a day) I'd use it every time it was available just to prevent a crisis. Seems like that would keep me away from my desk more than if the doors were unlocked. The flip side probably makes them inefficent too. I remember reading an article that compared driving when you really have to use the restroom to driving drunk. I forget the exact results, but I'm pretty sure they were about equally distracting. I know I can't concentrate on much else when I'm trying not to go.

JFC, who can't wait 2 hrs between pees?? Pregnant women, people with diabetes, people who take certain medications, people with kidney/bladder infections, people with IBS . . . everybody's got an excuse. What % of the employees could be affected by all your made up scenarios?? Maybe 2% Get a doctors note, so we know it's real, and if there's a true "emergency" we'll let you in the bathroom. So people with IBS really have to go every hour? is there a doctor here who can confirm that... All this talk about pee makes me have to go now...d'oh!! Lucky for me, no-one locked the door! IBS isn't a go every hour on the hour thing. But when you have an attack, it is a go "right now, no, seriously I mean now, RIGHT NOW" thing. Ever had food poisoning? Different experience, but it's that kind of urgency.

Beth- Yes the very same brother. I only have two- one is a hippie, full time 41 year old college student married with 3 kids and the other is the asshat that I work with. He and I are barely able to tolerate each other. He treats everyone like crap (including my parents, his ex wife, etc)
For those that asked- the point he was trying to prove I assume was "Don't screw with me or I'll screw with you" I'm guessing here.
When Dear old Dad finally retires? I imagine the bulk of the people will quit. They have said as much. Dad is beloved by his employees and anyone who has been here any length of time is very loyal to him. His son on the other head they wouldn't cross the street to pee on if he was on fire. I know- why does dad allow it to continue? He is basically a battered spouse. He is abused and bullied so much by my brother that I think he is virtually powerless to stop it- in his mind.
It's cause several family arguments. Most of the family refuses to be around my brother and avoid my parents house at all costs if he is there (which is every minute he has his kids because he'd rather them on my parents to watch).
I love the actual work I do and I enjoy working with everyone with the exception of my brother (and my mom if she's in a mood).

Sounds like your brother is the RL version of Colin Farrel's character in Horrible Bosses. Minus the coke habit.

He claims he was "just trying to prove a f&^king point" Was the point that he is a jackass? Because I think he succeeded. I know there is a serious point to this thread but I am literally LOL'ing from this!

It's ok- Beachbum He did just reinforce the notion that he is a jackass. He totally succeeded in that. Angel- that's exactly what my DS said. DH keeps telling me that DBro is why I can't have nice things at work - i guess nice things being Jimmy and employee access to the bathroom!

Luckily for everyone, the legal standard is not "it doesn't sound unreasonable to Taxman." Word!

Firebird- To borrow your phrase "WORD" My brother is a large part of the reason why DS is an only child and will remain an only child

Yes, it is an OSHA violation to not provide a bathroom or at least a port a potty.
A woman with a very heavy flow during her period wouldn't be able to wait 2 hours either. Perhaps, the brother didn't consider that it takes far more time for someone to go home, shower and change clothes and come back to work than just use the restroom in the first place.
Is the first aid kit still locked up? Or, are employees now expected to provide their own? That sounds like an OSHA violation too.
