so at no point does anyone have to "hold it" for more than 2 hours. JFC, who can't wait 2 hrs between pees?? So you've got the entire company trying to get into the bathroom to pee during their 30 minute lunch or 15 minute break. Yeah, makes a lot of sense..... we don't know how big the bathrooms are or how many people are trying to get in there. so the logistics could or couldn't work. we should probably get the brother on here so we can adequately assess the situation.

JFC, who can't wait 2 hrs between pees?? Pregnant women, people with diabetes, people who take certain medications, people with kidney/bladder infections, people with IBS . . . everybody's got an excuse. What % of the employees could be affected by all your made up scenarios?? Maybe 2% Get a doctors note, so we know it's real, and if there's a true "emergency" we'll let you in the bathroom. So people with IBS really have to go every hour? is there a doctor here who can confirm that... All this talk about pee makes me have to go now...d'oh!! Lucky for me, no-one locked the door!

OSHA will tear them a new ass if they get called about something like that.

Get a doctors note, so we know it's real, and if there's a true "emergency" we'll let you in the bathroom. Demanding personal medical information to have access to the bathroom is probably compounding the initial error.

Luckily for everyone, the legal standard is not "it doesn't sound unreasonable to Taxman."

People with IBS have to go when they have to go and if they have to go now, they had better find a bathroom ASAP. A friend of mine has IBS and things can turn on a dime.

The Bathroom is now open. I took the master key that we have in the office and unlocked the door to the lunchroom. I tracked down DBro and explained to him that it's illegal to deny people access to the bathroom facilities. He claims he was "just trying to prove a f&^king point"
Told him he would get us in trouble if he kept that shit up and I'd report him myself if I had to.
FWIW- it's a bathroom with 3 stalls in it.
Taxman- true emergency? Only a handful of people have keys to the lunchroom. They could easily waste 10 minutes trying to track down someone to unlock the door. In the case of most emergencies I don't imagine people have an extra 10 minutes to wander around trying to find someone with a key.

Not to mention that even if it's not an ongoing condition, most of the population will come down with a stomach bug or mild lunchtime food poisoning at some point during their working lives.

Depending on the laws , i don't believe it is legal to keep someone from the restroom and not give them breaks. I think the company can get fined for that.

Actually, several years ago, a friend of mine had a sister who was working somewhere and they wouldn't let her use the restroom for whatever reason. I think she did pee her pants and then filed a lawsuit.

Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Sheila also said the first aid kit was locked in there. That's another point OSHA will find interesting.

I worked at Disney on a tram ride that's ~20 mins long. 1/3 of the way into it a gentleman was yelling and screaming in the back (I couldn't hear him, I thought he had just dropped something) next thing I know he hops out of the moving tram and takes off. He told my supervisor he had IBS and couldn't wait...after giving that excuse they let him stay in the park for what you normally would get kicked out for.

Maybe you haven't seen it because, in the places you've worked, the bathroom HASN'T been locked?

OSHA is definitely to be taken seriously. But I'd think the biggest threat comes from the type of people who would reject "the principle of the thing". The tyrant is just asking for someone to relieve themselves in his office or something.

...:::"...or b/c people "make up" little medical excuses whenever they feel like it.":::...
There are certainly people out there who ruin things for everyone else by being overly sensitive or complaining. But all that aside, restricting access to the bathroom is against the law and carries stiff fines.
But let him play his game. Ultimately, it will be reported, and the tyrant will find out very quickly that he doesn't have the kind of arbitrary authority he thinks he has. I bet he'd throw a wicked tantrum when he is ordered to unlock the door, or fined heavily for refusing to do so. I bet he'd try to take away something else to "pay for the fine his employees caused him to get".

What kind of business is it? If you are having trouble getting workers does it make sense to piss off the good ones? Like Swamp says, deal with the problem workers and treat the good workers like gold.

Glad you opened the bathroom, Sheila. So - what happens when your dad is no longer in control of the company? Sounds like your brother is an expensive nightmare to work with.

He claims he was "just trying to prove a f&^king point" Was the point that he is a jackass? Because I think he succeeded. We had a jackass manager like this where I used to work. He got tired of people leaving the lights on in an area so he took duct tape and taped the light switch so the lights couldn't be turned on. A worker, seeing the tape, thought there was an electrical problem so he went into the area, at night, in the dark, and nearly fell off a scaffolding. So the manager nearly proved the point that you need light to walk at elevations safely. Idiot.

Locking the door makes people more inefficient. I know if I worked there and the 10am break came along, I'd leave to use the bathroom even if I didn't feel like it because I'd want to prevent an 11am emergency. Likewise I'd use it again at noon and 2pm (or whatever). So instead of using it when needed (which may only be 2-3 times a day) I'd use it every time it was available just to prevent a crisis. Seems like that would keep me away from my desk more than if the doors were unlocked.
