They're free to impose any stupid rule on their customers that they want to, and I'm free not to go there.

Yeah, I bet that stopped women from riding their bikes in shorts. So now they get a good look at the women in shorts after they get smucked by a bus.

I don't have a problem with a business having a dress code, We've all seen signs for "no shoes, no shirts, no service"; this just takes it a little further. However, trying to extend these restrictions to the whole neighborhood is going too far.

Having a dress-code inside their privately owned business is their right, I suppose - the result will most likely lead to a decrease in revenue and traffic into their store. But it should not go beyond their doors out onto the public street and be imposed on the general population.

Should this be allowed or not? -------------- Not. It's ridiculous. The Hasidic community here wanted the YWCA to black out their windows because their young men going to Hebrew school might catch a glimpse of women exercising. Don't like it? Don't look.

Let 'em do what they wish within the confines of their individual businesses. If they can absorb the loss of business, let 'em.

Whatever they want to do inside their store is up to them. Removing of bike lanes smacks of manipulating what goes on outside those walls and I don't like that.
My apartment complex is in a Hasidic neighborhood. I can see the synagogue from my deck. I suppose they would like it if I didn't run outside in shorts. Too bad for them.

But it should not go beyond their doors out onto the public street and be imposed on the general population. Maybe we can slowly get to get them used to the real world by organizing a World Naked Bike Ride day in their neighborhood the next couple of years. Yr1: faint at sight of 1st naked bicyclist; Yr2 hold out for a few more, and so on.

"I wonder how successful the businesses are? " They are in a heavily Hascidic (sp?) area...they are probably quite successful and don't need us floozies drivign out their respectable customers On the flip side, does that mean I can bar Hascidic jew from my place of business because I don't like the way THEY dress? Or is that protected because it is religious?

[Note, the "you" below - is a generic you and not directed toward any one in particular]
I think it should be allowed. Business owners - for example restaurants - have had dress codes for years. If going somewhere barefoot, in shorts, with a low cut sleeveless top (or any combination of the 4) is important to you - don't go in their business. If whatever they are selling is important to you - you'd just have to be sure to dress a little more modestly before you went into the business. I agree that shouldn't have the right to determine what people wear outside of their businesses.

"Can't discriminate according to sex, race, and religion. " But they can discriminate according to sexiness??? Only fatties in moo-moos are allowed to shop there And no, I don't really care what they do in their place of business...if they want to enforce a dress code they should have every right to do so...<<looks down at cleavage>>....I wouldn't be welcome

I agree but I also think they want the decrease in revenue if it means their children won't be exposed to the rest of us. They want to isolate themselves from the rest of us. And that's not good, in my opinion.

A lot of times the dress codes are not uniformly enforced.
I agree, MU.

There are areas even within Israel that you have to dress, no matter how bloody hot it is,a certain way and that means a skirt below your knees, arms totally covered, and no chest showing at all if you want to go there. Whether you are Jewish or not.

I actually want to go. I saw Egypt and it was awesome. Didn't spend enough time there. Can't go either place now safely.

The Hasidic community here wanted the YWCA to black out their windows because their young men going to Hebrew school might catch a glimpse of women exercising. Don't like it? Don't look. Read this with a generic "you" and from a "generic religious/philosopy" position - I do not know exactly WHY men should be screened from women (from a religious perspective). I always wonder about this... if a man (or anyone else) can't be expected to CONTROL themselves why do I (or anyone else) have to do it for them? If your religion/philosophy wants you to keep from thinking 'bad thoughts' or being exposed to something that isn't acceptable or whatever - then YOU should put on blinders/restraints or whatever else it takes to keep yourself "pure" or whatever. If you're gonna give me the responsibility for YOUR thoughts/actions (making me dress/act/whatever a certain way) then you better damn well give me the AUTHORITY to dictate YOUR actions. I will NOT accept responsibility for your actions without having the authority(the FORCE you to do the right thing) to go with that responsibility. Women in particular often get saddled with being 'responsible' for other people's actions (men's actions in particular) but have NO power or authority to go with it. That's WRONG. Remember - generic 'You'!!
