Man...I can't stand trying to read the butchered English the younger adults write.
Occasionally I need to communicate with classmates via email and a large majority of them are younger (just out of high school or nearly so). What the heck is so hard about full complete sentences with fully written words?
I begin to sympathize with teachers and professors!

I sympathize! 4 kids in junior high and older and I'm forever getting on to them about their sentence structure on homework.
The flip side is my ex who's decided to write out his manifesto to our son in a series of 6-18 page letters 2-3 days a week. Run on sentences, atrocious spelling, repeats of past letters and rants about what a dictator I am are peppered throughout in hand writing that is barely legible. Poor DS has to have me help him decipher the letters just so he can get through them.

I like change but I don't want to be there when it happens.

Nope -- I don't like change. And I don't encourage it.... Change is never good! I think we should have a Ministry of Language like they do in France where new words and changes in language have to be approved by the word Nazi's.

I appreciate new technology and rapid communication, and as a writer, I understand the need to get the information out there quickly, and in a language that is easily understood.
But I am old-fashioned enough to appreciate good spelling and grammar. I still have sufficient attention span to read and comprehend complete sentences. And while text language is cute and appropriate for certain age groups and settings, it is totally inappropriate in others. I have seen it used in business letters, resumes and other professional places.
Bottom line: think before you hit "Send." Think about the recipient. Will they "get" your humor? Will they be able to read the message at all?

I deal with written professional work product all the time. I receive memorandums and briefs filed with courts, that people are getting paid a lot of money to write. The overall quality of the writing is horrendous. It doesn't matter whether the attorney is young or old -- most people are crappy writers.

I totally agree Cheesy. People are entering the workforce completely unable to communicate online or on paper. And it's even worse when someone older is doing it. I received a memo from a co-worker in another department that was completely butchered into text abbreviations. The person was in their 50's and didn't even do the text abbrevs. correctly so it made even less sense. No wonder some people can't follow simple procedures. And if you're over 20, no you don't look cool trying to act like a teenager. U know who U are - TYVM.

I don't mind change so much. My issue is that language is meant to be used to get a point across, and text language does a miserable job of that. You spend so much time reading and re-reading it, and in the end you may still not get the point the writer was trying to make. For example, when I see text language somewhere, it makes my head hurt and I just don't bother reading it half the time.

If I received a work e-mail written with texting lingo, I would think the person was an idiot. However, I wouldn't care if I received a personal e-mail with the texting shortcuts. I typically spell out words even when texting, which makes my 12 year old laugh.

There is a place for text abbreviations, but when I see it in job resumes then I know we failed somewhere. I encourage people to use spell check too.

Spell check doesn't function as a word usage check. DD1 leans on spell check too heavily, but it isn't going to flag "there", if it is spelled correctly, and the word should be "their".
Sometimes it is glaringly obvious when people rely on spell check.

My wife got her MBA online. All of her classmates presumably had a bachelor's degree from somewhere, but I swear a few of them had language "skills" which should have embarrassed a sixth grader.
