Success. I have cut my hours by 35% and cut our household income by less than 20%. We can stomach that without much pain. The difference will come from taxes, after school care expenses and frivolous spending. I will also have some free time to explore options on doing freelance work instead of being an employee.

Congratulations! That sounds like a perfect solution and I hope you are happy with your new schedule and pay.
People should not have to do all that they do these days. It's just crazy and unhealthy!

My boss also said "If the situation changes and you want to come back full time - just give me a call." I love plans that have an escape hatch.

Yay, Thyme! I bet you'll be a lot less stressed and a lot more happied ;D
When DD still worked away from home, she and a friend shared a job. Haven't heard much about job sharing lately.

That's fantastic Thyme! Well done for asking!
When do you start? What's your new schedule?

Be careful what happened to my Dad doesn't happen to you. He decided to go part-time rather than fully retire, but just ended up with the same amount of work compressed into less time for less money. After about 5 months of that, he gave his notice and decided to fully retire instead.

Congrats, Thyme! I just read this whole thread -- great read -- starts out with a problem, ends with a great solution!
I wish the best to you with your new schedule!

Also, Thyme, I know you both earn good money so it's certainly not an issue, but I would caution you against including "frivolous expenses" in the amount of expenses you will be saving. After school care and taxes, yes, that's different, IMO.
I don't know what schedule you opted for but you will probably be spending more time with other people, having lunch, coffee, whatever. I'm guessing that you will also be networking, spending time with SAHMs or work-from-home people you may want to get to know better. You will have lunches with people who can give you advice on starting your own company or going out as a consultant. You may have some start-up costs for that (website, logo, cards, etc). You may spend more for exotic / interesting ingredients to cook more, if you decide to cook more, since you'll have more time to cook (or whatever, you get the point).
So, I think you'll probably spend that "frivolous spending" money DIFFERENTLY, but I think you'll probably still spend it.

Congratulations, Thyme!!! Well done!!!! I hope your stress level and blood pressure drop significantly. Enjoy that benefit. It will certainly help with the dynamic at home.

So, does this mean you are taking Thursdays off entirely or are you working fewer hours per day?

I'm happy for you thyme.
Did you ever get around to doing a financial analysis of your own household?

I got my first paycheck that was for my part-time work, well, as it turned out, there were only a couple of days I was part time, but I didn't have to pay my health insurance premium - so the paycheck was bigger than usual. LOL - how did that happen!

How is it going? Do you like your new schedule? That's what I want to know too. Thyme - Is it working out like you hoped? Is it too soon to know yet?
