My aunt has been a kindergarten/1st grade teacher for over 30 years.... specifically in a lower income area. By choice. I've heard her mention 1 or 2 "problem" kids each year, but she's now teaching the children & in some cases, grandchildren of her early students. And talks about how wonderful the kids are. I've heard her complain and even contemplate retirement because of "No Child Left Behind" more than she ever has about the kids.
It takes someone special to be a teacher and even more special to teach in a lower income area. They have to do it because they love it and want to make a difference.
I also strongly believe in the idea of it takes a village.

Being pro-death, I'd say people shouldn't fook with me. Unless they're willing to accept the consequences. The Dude doesn't have it in him. The Dude evolved. Sam Eliot was full of shit.

There is a big difference between a five-year-old having an accident and not being completely potty trained. Schools don't accept kids if they aren't potty trained, but at five-years-old, occasional accidents are going to happen.

There's likely a few parents that would vote for making abortion retroactive to age 18

again, when done correctly, it's more than just the parents raising a child. So - I was out talking to my across the street neighbor tonight. She is a teacher. I asked her how school was going - she is teaching Kindergarden this year. She said to me - I am so tired of raising other peoples children. They come to school without knowing any manners, without knowing anything about rules, and not knowing how to interact with a teacher. Some are not even completely potty trained (at 5 and 6 this is unbelievable). I asked her about the parents and she said to me that most of them are raised by single mothers and they come late to parent/teacher meetings so tired that they are not even listening to what I say. They don't have the time really to do anything other than make dinner and send the kids to bed. Then she said - and everyone expects me to do it all. She is a good teacher - I have volunteered in her classroom - but she is spread awfully thin. When I was there one child kept "falling" (on purpose) from his chair. Another kid had an "accident" and trying to keep the kids from eating glue - well lets just say I wasn't completely sucessful I just feel that the expectations of a "village" raising a child are unrealistic - a lot of children are raised by day care and schools. suz, I'm not talking about relying on schools. I knew when I was still in grade school, that wasn't sufficient. I was referring to the extended family that helps to raise a child. I distinctly remember being either whapped across the ass or spoken to like one of my own parents by quite a few of my aunts and uncles, as well as some family friends, as I was growing up. none of these times resulted in either of my parents jumping to my defense as another adult was reprimanding me, to say that I was being "creative" or "unique", either. if I was out of line, it was pointed out and I learned from it. it does take a village. this "village" is what the parents make of it. too many of us are cocooned in our own homes these days, and expect to be sainted because we're taking it all on ourselves.

suz - you sound like a miserable person. stop taking life so seriously and get over yourself xoxo I am not miserable at all! I am suprised that you feel the need to judge someone you have never met simply because I don't completely agree with what everyone else is saying. I have simply stated my views about a subject that is obviously very controversial. what's funny is you seem to be passing judgment on EVERYBODY ELSE who doesn't believe what you believe! lmao

suz, but you've made friends where you are, right? those friends are part of your village. there's a thought that you choose your family as you age. there's even a theory that single adults will view how their close friends react to a potential mate as more important than how their blood relatives react to the same person. your family, and by extension the help you enlist to raise your children by example, is who you choose to involve in your life - blood relative or otherwise.

ok, but that is your situation. I'm honestly not trying to subtly wrangle you over to my line of thinking, seriously. I'm actually spending a lot of time tonight trying to see where everyone else is coming from with their opinions....on a few threads. it's intriguing and frustrating all at the same time, if only because I've come from such a different history than those with differing opinions, and I can't figure out what brought them to their views.
can I ask where do you put families that are all like yours? by that I mean they spend a lot of time with those "family friends" rather than "core family" to use your phrase.

Well, I hope the proper ones are duly proud of themselves for insulting our Suz.
Hope you got off on it. Plan to kill any small animals today?

No smart animals...but...
I'm "it's none of you business what I do with my body, or my choice for my future."
I have children, been married for 29 years, made choices that would have made most of you cringe. They are mine, I live with them, and I don't really care what your opinion is.

I'm a quasi-Catholic who happens to be pro-choice. I also happen to be a never-married single parent. This thread has been so very black and white in places (I read earlier) and I'm more a shades of gray type of gal myself. When I regain my exhalting powers, I'll be hitting you Jan.

But after some reading today by some posters. I'm starting to believe there is a reason for some abortions. It cleanses the gene pool Now that's just silly...we shouldn't kill the innocent...wait until they are older and then shoot them

I have an easier idea........ save the bullets and turn their rooms into vaults. No combination, no come home.

Same with me. I can't expect to sway anyone over what my views on this subject might be, and I don't expect anyone to try to sway me over to their side (which is why I'm keeping my opinion on this subject to myself).

Exactly Lassie, I live with my life choices, so should everyone else. I don't talk about my bad decisions, or good ones...the choices were mine, and they are what they are.
I am of the opinion, if it's not your decision, your position doesn't count.
