To satisfy the male curiosity Do these women take the babies to work? If not how long will the milk keep before going bad? Or how do they keep it before they get to the baby after work? My wife did not work till the baby was weened so just courious.

Yank: women who nurse usually have to pump every 2-3 hours to keep their supply up and prevent engorgement (which can be VERY painful). It's not feasible to go home every few hours to pump.
Handyman - once pumped, milk needs to be frozen or refridgerated ASAP - no longer than an hour afterward.

Now, may be a stupid question, but why would a woman even want to pump at work?Because my husband is a lousy provider so I can't stay home and properly breastfeed my baby? I don't have the luxury of driving 15 minutes home, taking 30 minutes to pump and then driving the 15 minutes back to work and doing this three times a day. If I did not pump my boobs would leak everywhere and my supply would dwindle since it is an on demand type of thing. As far as storage you store it in the fridge. I kept mine in my lunch bag till it was time to go home.

My wife keeps hers unrefrigerated for up to 8 hours, if it is going to be used within that 8 hours. If she is saving it for later she puts it in the fridge or freezer.

It's much easier to be discreet when you are nursing a child. Only part of one breast is exposed and the nipple is covered. Most women at work use a double pump. I have no desire to see another woman's nipples dragged an inch down the cup in a rhythmic fashion. Call me crazy. You're crazy!! Now, may be a stupid question, but why would a woman even want to pump at work? Isn't that something better done at home? because I didn't want milk leaking out of my boobs while I was working. I also wanted to have milk for the babysitter to give to the baby.

She usually doesn't have a need to keep it out that long, but if needed that is her time frame.

4-8 at room temp, 48-72 in the fridge (I think), in a fridge freezer anywhere from 3-6 months and can be stored up to 12 in a deep freezer.

oh, that's right. We were given 4 hours since DS was in the NICU. But I thought that was for previously refrigerated milk and not fresh milk...?

This is another one of those 'family value' issues. The choice is always there, supporting the family and supporting business are not always coexistent. So the question is which way do you think America should go. Funny but I remember back in the late 80's when employees began complaining about people smoking in their offices/cubes. A couple companies I worked for solve that problem immediately by turning one conference room into a smoking room. It was really disgusting, you could smell that room from both ends of the hall BUT companies did it to keep both smokers and non-smokers happy. I mention this because having watched my wife deal with this issue I can say with certainty that if men also lactated every business, retail outlet, restaurant and office building would have 'lactation chambers'.

I'd think it's a bit dry and dusty there in Nevada. Vermont? Let's see....frigid...syrupy....heavily forested... That pretty much describes the ex so maybe.

Men do lactate. You just have to starve the crap out of them first. There are many documented instances of men lactating during their first couple meals after being liberated from concentration camps. I have no idea whether or not they would have kept producing if they'd fed a baby during that time.

legal requirements
Tell me why does every little thing have to be legislated? Can't people reason any more? Lets see, bathrooms have locks, coolers keep things cool.
And for the record your maternity leave sucks. Pardon the pun. These women shouldn't have to pump they should be able to stay home with their infants...but thats another thread.

For 1-2 years Are you kidding? That's not maternity leave, that's dropping out of the labor force to procreate and coming back later. Women are more than welcome to do that. They just can't do it on the employer's dime, and they sure as hell shouldn't expect one to hold their position for them that long.

Pumping in the bathroom is just freakin' disgusting.
I would have gone absolutely wacko had I stayed home with my children. I took 10 to 12 weeks off. That was plenty.

Public ones don't. There isn't a lock on any of the bathroom doors in this building.
If you are meaning I should go in the stall and lock myself in would you eat a meal that has been prepared inside a bathroom stall?
If you wouldn't then why the hell should my kid have to?

So all we need is to get the decision makers into concentration camps and after a while they might see the new mother's point of view.

I apologize I assumed that you had access to clean washrooms. Thats a problem if you don't. I'd address that issue for sure.

I agree that our maternity leave sucks. We should have the option to stay out longer if we want to. And "ew" on pumping in the bathroom. A woman at my first job had to do that. BLECH!
