I'm not the inimitable dancinmamma nor the incomparable suziq, but I can copy and paste with the best. Somewhere there is a post about a handbook for newbies/oldbies who want refreshers, but I don't know where. I do want to brag - on Thanksgiving morning I bought a rib roast for DH and DS and I for that day's dinner, and was given a free turkey (enjoyed Sunday with larger gathering) with coupon, and a free 12-pound ham for reaching some $ level of purchases since October. It was just ... nice. Really nice. Hi finnime! Thanks you so much for helping out and pasting us on a December Thread. I haven't done much but live off of my stockpile. On the day after Thanksgiving, I ventured out and bought black Friday items on all 4 cards at CVS. There were a few things that I had already bought the week before, so I just returned some of them and re-purchased them to generate the EB's. I have a nice stockpile of CVS EB's, so I have to check on Frugalsuz's blog to see "what's up," LOL. I hope all of you are doing well. I am still exercising and watching my weight, but I have had complications from my hysterectomy. My femoral nerves (inner thighs) are slightly irritated, so I have to add in twice a week re-hab to hopefully strengthen those areas. I now have a neurologist. Life is tough..... I am still grateful for the occasional deals that I can take advantage of. I just want them to be free or close to it. If it involves candy, I want it, but I can't eat it. Thanks again, Finnime. Suzi: I am sorry to hear about your complications, I hope your rehab goes well....

Marv, the exact same thing happened to my mom at her CVS (this was about 2 years ago). They finally figured out that it was one of the pharmacy techs lifting pills, but it seems a little ridiculous to ask customers to count their own before leaving the store to make sure they're all there! Hopefully they figure out who's doing it.

My DH was short pills at our CVS consistently. Once they tried to tell us the the BC pills for our daughter came from the Dr. (she was 5 at the time and there with my DH) we went across the street to Walgreens. Haven't had a problem since. DH's memory isn't very good, probably due to his medications so we could never prove it, but after all of the small issues we had, it was just easier to switch.

Even here in metro Chicago where the candy canes ARE free after EB there were 'issues' w/the EB. They were NOT printing. This was also mentioned on AFC. I caught it before I left the store and had cashier manually print. Word of Warning: I have been having problems w/my Rx at CVS. I got a new Rx in Sept for a med that I fill monthly. it seemed short (<30 pills) on the orginal fill. IT WAS short by 1 pill in Oct. it was ok in Nov. It was 3 pills short on my 12/2 refill. This is 5 pills in 4 months. Had a MAJOR discussion w/the store mgr and head pharmacist on Sun. Actually had the pharmacist on duty tell me I HAD to count my pills b/4 I leave the store from now on (BS-NOT going to happen). I have warned EVERYONE that if it happens again I will be: contacting CVS corp filing an insurance FRAUD complaint filing a Medicare FRAUD complaint The CVS where I fill my Rx is in an area where pretty much everyon has some kind of insurance Rx coverage. This store pharmacy is always VERY busy. If they short every Rx 1 pill/month they are WAAAY increasing their profit level. Also could be a person in the pharmacy helping themselves to your pills. It's interesting that you just posted this, because quite a number of years ago I was shorted about 10 pills. I had this weird feeling when the person handed me my bottle. Just something about him - wouldn't look me in the eye. I actually have never before checked the # of pills, but I did then. And sure - enough - almost half were missing. He immediately took care of it. The thing about what you posted is scary, because many people are dependent on their pills to help them live and being shorted a pill could be dangerous.

There is a regional deal on American Greetings cards this week at CVS, buy 3 get $3 ECB. There's also a printable coupon for $2/3, I think. This is the third time I've seen this deal in a few weeks. Is it the same one or has it reset? If I bought some a few weeks ago can I get more now? I remember that they used to have monthly deals and advertise it once and then again a few weeks later and you thought it was a separate deal. TIA.

Looks like Turning Leaf is the one to buy. It's 2/$10. Also, I checked the ad and NZ is supposed to be NV. I was wondering when the U.S. annexed New Zealand.

Woohoo. I cleaned yesterday and came across several EBs and CATs all expired. So annoying. The deals have been crap since I only buy MMs or on need now and I've wasted some. It's freezing here (ok, not freezing but in AZ we get to exaggerate) and I had already decided tonight I am using my Black Friday EBs on logs for the fireplace and chocolate to go with the wine I'm buying. This deal came just in time. ;D #chocolate#

NAGOk, actually I have to add one more thing. My post is not meant against anyone - i.e. the original poster (can't even remember who it was) or DancinMama. There always used to be a TON of anti-food-stamp users threads on Your Money when it was on MSN. I have more to say on this and how we are harder on the poor than we are on the rich but that will have to wait until another day. Just wanted to make sure no one thought I was personally picking on them. leanna: Anyone who uses coupons like most of us do, has got to be pretty thick skinned. ;D I really appreciate your comments and the link to the article. The 1-4% fraud rate addressed in the article refers to the types of retailers where food stamps are being redeemed (i.e. retailers that actually sell food as opposed to those that don't). In other words, now only 1-4% of the billions of dollars that are distributed through the food stamp program are spent at locations that don't sell food. And although I'm thrilled that the rate of fraud "is only" 1-4%, it still amounts to millions, if not billions, of wasted taxpayer dollars. Equally disconcerting to me is the number of people who might qualify for benefits "on paper" who do not really need them (i.e. the person who works under the table and/or derives their living in the black market). Then there's always the recipient that trades an amount loaded on their card with a drug dealer that will gladly give them $50 worth of dope for $100 worth of groceries. Or the person who takes their card into the grocery store and is not concerned about how far they can stretch the "free grocery money" that they are given. The last example I can think of is the person who qualifies for benefits today that gets a disqualifying job (and income) tomorrow, but continues to receive "automatically reloaded benefits" until their eligibility period expires and then simply does not reapply at that time. My gut feeling is that there are billions and billions of food dollars that are getting into the "wrong hands", taking them away from those who really need them. A better system might be direct government food distribution through local grocery stores where cards are programmed with far more restrictive "rations": a monthly allotment (similar to the WIC program) with CHOICES of rice, beans, milk, juice, bread, eggs, ground chicken or turkey, tuna, cheese, fruits and veggies, etc. based on family size - healthy, basic foods; but nope recipients don't get steak. Choose items such that the poor will be more than happy to get them, but not so unlimited (as they are today) as to attract fraud and abuse. Some may complain that this "punishes" the poor, but it means that assistance dollars would not be spread as thin - something which I'm sure the truly needy would be (or certainly should be) in favor of. Just a thought.

Got some good deals at Target tonight - 3 12-oz packages of Starbucks for $7.99 apiece, minus the $1/1 and $3/2 coupons from yesterday's Red Plum, total $19.97, plus $5 Target gift card. Transaction #2, 3.5lb bag of Purina One Beyond, on sale for $6.49, minus $4/1 SS coupon from late Sept./early Oct. (sorry no exact date), total $2.94 with tax. Used the GC and have $2.06 left over. And lots and lots of Starbucks ;D

About food stamps. In our community here, in metro D.C./Maryland are people, families, from all over the world, including all of the U.S. There are many well-off people and many more - too many - poor: working poor. And I know within me that I could not judge the means people use to get food for their families, or what choices of food they make. Some of the schools in this area have offered classes for parents on how to prepare the foods that might be given by the food pantry, such as canned peas or dry pasta. A good thing, sure, but consider how hard it must be to not understand that these are staple goods, and nutritious. Where do you start? For food stamps I would much prefer to err and lose to fraud some small percent than exclude, by making it too complicated or difficult, the hungry. Food is abundant in this country - surely enough for all to eat, even those who eschew cow's milk or never eat beef or pork or cabbage or tomato paste - there is enough. Children, the elderly, the laborers, the young mothers here should all know the security that there is enough, will be enough. IMVHO

Thanks everyone! I am doing just fine. I can walk and jog a bit. The problem is getting out of chairs and beds, riding in cars and airplanes.
It seems as if the nerves in that area "fall asleep," and I am slightly weak when I get up.
The PT person said that I didn't like the stirrups during my hysterectomy. The neuro said that it is too risky to fix by surgery. Thank you so much for your concern.
I appreciate you all so much.

RE CVS pill shortage issue yes, I am pretty sure it is likely a single tech filling the Rx. However, since it has happened 2/4 months for SURE and most likely 3/4 months it seems pretty pervasive which points to a pharmacy mgr NOT doing a proper job of training, monitoring or generally supervising the techs. Also, the pharmacy mgr pointedly said to me that my file would be marked for a 'hand count.' WTF!!! how do they dispense pills w/o a hand count? Having worked in an adjacent business I KNOW Rx meds generally come to a pharmacy in 100, 250, 500 pill bottles. If they are done by fill level I can almost understand being 'short' since my pills are a bit large and weird shaped but shouldn't those ALWAYS be hand counted? I would consider moving the Rx to another pharmacy but I already go to CVS at least 2x/week between what I need and stuff for my Dad and do NOT want to add another stop/chore to my list. Also, I have noticed this. What about the 100's of people who do not and pay extra out of pocket, have their insurance paying extra (even higher premeums anyone/) and/or higher medicare costs? That is in addition to the 100's like the elderly lady in line w/me on Sun who couldn't see well enough to count out her $$ or my dad who is 93 and can't concentrate well enough to count them out.

Hi all! I have been pretty busy so haven't had time to post much lately. Thanks to Mid for the envie!! I got it on Sat and used it Sat night! I got 2 Clairol hair dyes and 2 pantene shampoos for $14.96 after the coupons. And since I had a $10 cat from a prev trans I paid $4.96 plus tax and got $13.00 in cats for a future trans. Leanna I used to manage a pharmacy. Today most busy pharmacies use machines to count the pills. I am sure there are still a few small mom and pop stores that still count everything by hand but most use machines for at least the most popular Rx's. The part that is strange is the pharmacies use computers to order stock and keep track of inventory. So if they regularly short people the computer would be showing they are out of something that they aren't. At some point the Pharmacist would have to notice if this happened more than occasionally.

I am thinking the pills go missing after the machine count and before bagging or placing on the rack, so inventory would be mostly correct, as it's assuming all the pills counted reached the patient.

NAG about foodstamps:
I do think that the elderly are not receiving the full benefit of the FS program in my state. In the past 6 months, I have helped 2 seniors at the register of the local grocery store, b/c they simply didn't have the funds to pay for their entire bill. One was last month for $4.XX and the other was a couple of months ago for about $20 (I think this lady wasn't mentally all there enough to keep up with her $$). On top of that, I helped an elderly client fill out a financial need form for a local program in which he had to provide all his financials. He lives alone on SS in a rented trailer with SS providing just under $600/month and foodstamps providing $69/month. I don't know how he makes it. He has to pay rent, insurance on his vehicle and hopefully his trailer, gas for his car for dr's appointments, any clothing needs, utilities, etc. He has significant medical problems which could be improved by a better diet, but he simply can't afford it on this kind of money. My co-worker's dad is essentially in the same boat financially with the added issue of dementia and he receives essentially the same amount in food stamps. So, I am still frustrated by people who are on the program and appear to not appreciate it when others can't get enough to even consider any kind of waste. I think the poor elderly is about to be a bigger epidemic in this country than the working poor....

With all this talk about people who don't have enough, I'm feeling pretty lucky right now. I think I need to donate a few more things this holiday season. I haven't done it for a while and other people certainly need things more than I do.
