I have never found a travel mug I like. They are awkward to drink out of and the metal ones have a taste that screws up the coffee. I like the take out cups from Timmy`s. So how bad would it be to save my cups and lids from there, rinse them out, and reuse them?

Lol, sometimes you crack me up... Ok, because you are doing this because you prefer them, I'd say frugal. If you were doing it for some other reasons I'd probably say cheap. I'm also very picky about travel mugs but I've found a couple that I like--I try to not lose them! I don't know what Timmy's coffee lids are shaped like since I've never seen one of those either (sometimes I feel way to sheltered ) but have you ever looked at the "not a paper cup" coffee cups they have now? They look like a paper cup with lid but are ceramic and silicon for the lid. I had two that I HATED because of the way they felt on the outside (made my skin crawl because of the texture) but DS bought me a different one for Christmas and I love it.

I'm with apple, you're doing it by choice not because you can't afford the travel mug. that's totally OK.
what don't you like about the non-metal mugs? I'm pretty picky about mine, too. I don't like any that have moving parts on the lids - you know, those slides that close the openings? those are hard to get really clean without soaking them, and I just can't be bothered. I found some nice ones at Target a couple years ago, for $5 each (I think?). contoured lids, with a high enough wall on the lid to prevent spillage, and no moving parts.

What are these ceramic ones? The ones I mentioned are, so not good if you're going to be tossing it around, but works well if you use it in the car/at work etc where you don't want a regular mug to spill.

I agree with what others said, I don't think it is cheap, just frugal. I do have a travel mug that I really like and I hope I never lose it either. It is metal on the outside and plastic on the interior. I have been using it every day for over 3 years.

I re-used my McDonald's cups until I found a permanent mug-nothing wrong with it!

Go for it! I'm reusing my side salad bowl from Wendy's to force myself to eat a salad every lunch. The bowl is just the right size for me and I get to embarrass my kids (OMG, I can't believe she's taking the dirty bowl out like we're homeless or something!) Gotta love it.

I think it's neat that you're reusing the container. I be the powers that be don't mind the free advertising that they're getting by you using it.

I'm not crazy about travel mugs either. The top never sems to fit right, they leak and spill all over me when I'm trying to drink them. They don't fit in the car cup holder right, etc. etc. I've been buying the Vanity Fair or Dixie paper "travel" coffee mugs with lids. I regularly find them on sale for around $2 for a package of 10 and they almost always have coupons. I usually end up paying around $1 a package for them. I really like them, although when it's really cold, they don't tend to keep my coffee very hot for very long.

later,
Admit it, you just want to feel cool always walking around with a Timmy's cup. People will think you are a young urban professional.

OMG! My parents do that and it drives me nuts! They have some that they have reused for years and years. I can't see where that's healthy. Just how clean can you get it?
I recently bought one that looks like a disposable one also, but have the hardest time getting the lid to stay on. Any handy tips?

Motherto2, When I looked at the links above, this website was posted as an ad. They have lids maybe one of their lids will fit your cup. www.tervis.com/Main.aspx

I was really worried about that when I got mine, I don't like any chance of a lid falling off, but no problem so far. Does yours just feel too loose? If so, I have no idea. Or does it feel so tight that it pops off? If that's the case, warming the lid under a hot faucet might stretch it out enough to go on better, hopefully the "lip" is deep enough that once it cools it will fit snugly in place and not pop off.

This is being frugal (and Earth friendly!) If you are taking extra cups from the restaurant, then you are being cheap.

I don't know if I could reuse a coffee cup but does reusing a soft drink cup count? I can't/don't use McDonald's but the QT here uses plastic cups and lids that I can and do wash. It seems so wasteful and heedless of the environment to just throw them away. I found a nice travel mug at a local thrift store ($1) that I like and use. I may not buy clothes there but everything else is fair game!

Latebloomer: Don't worry if others think it's cheap or frugal. Do your thing! When I hit 65, and signed up for Social Security and Medicare, I decided I didn't care anymore what other people think. I don't want to hurt other people's feelings by being insensitive but I'm not political correct anymore. After biting my tongue for years when others didn't seem to mind offending me, I'll state my position and let the chips fall. Same for you, Sweet gal, you have your reasons to do what you want to do, so go do it; well maybe better refrain from illegal activities. And you don't have to explain why you do what you do, unless it's such a great idea you want to share it. . . .not defend it.

How did I get a "Karma"?
More snow and Hubby has gone skiing. I'm still getting over two episodes of losing my stomach's contents. Could this be a start of a diet?
