It's a sad state of affairs when we've gone from burning witches at the stake, to burning steaks at the witch's house on the BBQ. Was the BBQ on a Sunday?

Will have to go back and finish reading the others posts, but want to say what is on my mind. I don't think the OP is trying to offend anyone, just seeking the opinions of others. I personally don't want my phone to ring after a certain time of night unless its an emergency and made that "rule" clear to my children's friends. I'm also one of those who choose not to do much of anything on Sundays. I don't go to church because I haven't found one I feel comfortable in/enjoy. Growing up, my parents didn't attend church either but Sunday was the day you didn't do any "work" that wasn't necessary like dishes. No laundry, no yard work, nothing. So because of that, I'm of the same mindset but if something needs to be done like a load of laundry, I do it. My one pet peeve with others is yardwork on Sundays. I simply don't want to listen to your lawn mower on a day I'm trying to relax. Most of my neighbors get their lawns mowed in the evenings or on Saturdays so its not a big deal. But my landlord is always cutting grass or using the leaf blower in fall and it drives me nuts to have to hear it a couple nights a week, on Saturdays and Sundays. Really, the yard isn't that large. Maybe that's why it irritates so much. Now as for store employees and restaurants, etc. Chik-Fil-A's owner is a Christian and chooses not to open his business on Sundays. That's fine by me. We had a local grocery store that operated the same way - Christian owner, didn't sell alcohol and closed on Sundays. That's their choice and from what I've seen it hasn't affected their business. In regards to the empoyees, its up to them to schedule off whatever day they want off. My son is heavily involved in church so he negotiates his schedule to have off on Sundays and be off by a certain time on Mondays so he can go teach a Bible study. He's never had any problems with these requests because he's flexible the rest of the week. My feeling is to each his own. I'll respect your beliefs if you respect mine. I don't expect you live by my "rules", but if I ask you not to call/visit before or after certain times, please respect my wishes.

Before I would have been tempted to start putting off all the yard work until Sunday mornings on the off chance it'll drive the old retired folks in the neighborhood crazy. I'd have been out there drinking beer and being noisy, just in case I was also being annoying the thought of which would have made doing that crap a little more fun.
Luckily, I've found god and I'm a better person now.

My hubby works nights....some weeks, his only day off is Sunday..and that means he worked Saturday night, came home Sunday morning, and doesn't have to be back in until Monday night. My kiddo also knows that Sunday morning, all the extra teens that have been camped out all weekend have to go say hello to their own parents until next Friday night.
We don't go to church....
The only set things we do on Sundays are watch sports & have a family sit down at the table dinner.... All errands are finished on Saturday....I get my grocery shopping and anything else done then....kiddo does his own laundry and Sunday is his day to use the laundry room (if I didn't give him a "day" his clothes would be scattered in there all week).
Everyone I know is trained to basically, keep us off of their Sunday calendar since it's often hubby's only day off. Our phone doesn't ring on Sundays, no one rings the doorbell....it's a quiet day other than the 3 of us screaming at the refs on tv....

So someone else's schedule is supposed to be an excuse to bother people in a neighborhood other than said person's own?

We tend to be just the opposite on the weekends. After a long week of work, all we want to do on Saturday is chill and hang out. By Sunday we are rested and recharged and ready to tackle projects such as housework, repairs, washing the car, yard work and landscaping.

"And this country was founded on the belief of Christianity." It was? There's actually a neat little excerpt from the late 1700's in some treaty with another country where it actually states specifically that the United States was NOT founded on Christianity. The whole "this country was founded on Christianity" always seems to be spouted by people who don't actually know history. Just because the founding father's last names weren't Englestein or Mahatmou doesn't mean they believed in Christianity itself, or that even if they did that they thought the government should be founded on Christian beliefs. "This country needs to get back to it's roots." Slavery? Abusing native cultures? Giving women less rights than men? Which roots exactly? Just the ones you want? #thumbsup# #thumbsup# it is amazing how many people spout that line....

I wasn't trying to restart the Crusades, folks. Seriously. I only mentioned Blue Laws as a frame of reference for my thinking that Sunday mornings are personal. Use them as you will. Just don't try and sell me popcorn while I'm sitting in my own home until Noon. ;D

In Germany and I believe most European countries, pretty much everything except restaurants and your friendly neighborhood gas station is closed on Sundays. Ten-ish years ago, everything actually closed starting at noon on Saturday and first reopened Monday morning. Same applies for holidays; I was taken completely by surprise that Jan 6 (Ascension Day?) was a holiday and spent the day wandering the closed but still lovely streets of Vienna (that'd be when I was vacationing in Austria, not Germany, for those of you keeping score at home!)
I found it horribly boring and frustrating myself, but being a study-abroad student with no family within 4000 miles throws a bit of a wrench in the whole "spend Sunday with your family" works.

What is this thread about anyway? I'm lost, as usual. We're going to hell in a handbasket. The usual. But...but...but... it's a PRETTY handbasket.... I worked really hard on it and Meghan doesn't like it

There are too many of us for a handbasket. It's going to take a BIG laundry basket.

And this country was founded on the belief of Christianity. One God. One Nation. And just to make sure I say the most unpopular thing in the world. the one thing that has done the biggest amount of damage to this country is taking God out of our schools, homes, and even churches. I remember when praying was the most normal thing to do. Now if you bow your head in public someone wants to cry they're offended. Well be offended. This country needs to get back to it's roots. And back God. --------------------------- Lilly is absolutely right. This country does need to get back to its roots and back to God. We have become a nation of Godless heathens. Sunday morning should be spent in worship and prayer. Sunday afternoon should be spent in reconnecting and breaking bread with kin. Sunday evening should be spent in moral and wholesome pursuits -----------------like a good Witch Burning! Fun for the whole family! Praise the Lord!!! No can do. My Sundays are spent cleaning house, doing laundry, doing yard work, and cooking meals for the week.

What the deuce... who says no to a good witch burning? Well, it's clear that she's a sympathizer, or maybe a witch herself. The prudent thing to do would be to toss her into a pond to see if she floats.

Hold on now, that's just one test. We'd also have to strip you naked and stab every blemish or discoloration on your skin with a needle to make sure they all bleed. One of them is supposed to be the devils mark and not bleed. Or something like that anyway.

6 days a week I can go to the grocery store at 6 am and buy beer. One day per week I have to wait until noon. I'm sure this has some official reason besides being a blue law - but it originated as part of the blue laws - so I still call it out.
So, if I have insomnia and wake up at 6 am on Sunday, and my family is peacefully sleeping, I can go grocery shopping and get everything I need for the whole week, and be home to still have breakfast and what-not with my family. Except, I have to go back to the store later that day because we were planning on making a white-wine sauce for our dinner. What difference does it make? Do the drunks really sober up that morning? Even if they do, who cares? It doesn't seem to sober them up permanently. Let them stay drunk, if that is what they choose.
