Blue Laws don'r really affect me, I can take them or leave them.
Usually on weekends if we don't have a gun show or auction to go to we (I mean DH) likes to sleep in. I'm usually up before the buttcrack of dawn regardless.
If people mention coming over or calling on a weekend, we always tell them to wait until after noon. If someone calls earlier than that, I let the machine answer it (unless it's family).

Sundays growing up for us were Sunday school followed by church and then we would either go to my grandparents house for lunch with all the other family or we, as a family would take a drive. Spend the time together doing nothing really but being together. Then we would be back for church that night. It was the one day of the week my dad did not work. He refused to do more work than was needed to keep the house running on Sundays. Mom did too. Dad made breakfast every Sunday morning. We took something with us to granny's for lunch or we had a picnic or something like that. It was good times and at the time we kids didnt even realize just how good they were.
Sundays should still be for church and families. The reason so much goes on on Sundays is because we the general public have demanded it. I remember when restaurants were closed and if you needed gas you had to find one open. Every thing closed.
I think Sudays is what made a lot of people family.

Sundays should still be for church and families. And my family likes the option of going out on Sunday. Or having a leisurely breakfast, letting the kids play with the boy down the street for a bit, then heading off to softball practice. My wife and I go to and help out, so we're still being active as a family, we just do it without sitting around at home, or sitting in a church quietly listening to some guy talk.

What are the jews, the muslims, the agnostics, the atheists, the hindus, and the people without families supposed to do on Sunday morning?

I'm gonna tell the hospital board of directors that my husband can't work sunday mornings anymore. He should be at church with his family.

I dont know. Spend time with their families. Just because you dont go to church, which is what I do so of course that is my preference Sunday, doesnt mean you cant spend it with your families and friends.

and I remember when doctors didnt work on Sundays except for emergency situations and to do rounds. Medical staff was limited. Of course I also remember when the staff would pray with you and you didnt have to be afraid you were going to offend someone because you kept the Lord's day. Personally I'm offended when I'm told I cant be more open with my beliefs because I might offend some one.

Lily, do you really remember what it was like when everything was closed on a Sunday? No pharmacies, no movie theaters, no bowling alleys or skating rinks. No games. Your choice may be to sit at home and do nothing - and that's fine. Unless you have a job that requires you to work Sundays (which most jobs will not if you can cite religious objections), why do you care that the rest of us would like to live? I hope by the way, that you're not watching football on tv on Sundays. Because you know you're just encouraging them.

Where do you people live that still have blue laws? I seriously thought they were abolished in the 70s. The ABC store here is open on Sundays noon-6pm. The only place I know of that won't be open on Sunday is Chick-Fil-A. Anyway, I like to do my errand running on Sunday. The stores have figured out the majorty of the public is out & about on Sunday. If it wasn't profitable they would not be open, bottom line.

You want to eat out on Sunday morning. You dont care who is at work as long you get what you want. some one has to work those jobs to keep you happy.
Now personally I think if it went back to businesses closing on Sunday like they used to it wouldnt be an issue. But in those restaurant jobs if you want a pay check you work when you are told to. And I dont know anyone who can just leave a job these days.

I do occasionally go to church. my kids go to catholic school. but I don't see how my beliefs should impact yours. if people want to shop on sunday a.m., and the merchants are willing to cater to them, what does it matter to me or you?

I believe the point is that people who practice different faiths believe other days of the week are the Sabbath Day. Nothing would be open on Saturdays as well because that is the Jewish Sabbath. And Muslims pray to Mecca several times a day. Should we close everything down during their times of prayer? Christianity is only one of many many many religions out there. The entire country should not revolve around the beliefs of one religion no matter which one it is.

Because it is the Lord's day. and it should be kept holy. Thats why. For Christians, but not everyone is Christians. Saturday is the holy day for Jews and Seventh Day Adventists.

A parent was driving the van. It may be the only day available to him/her to help the Cub Scouts. Cut the world some slack. Why are we expected to cut them slack. I dont like my Subday morning disturded either. Its a good thing they didnt knock on my door. Because why would we have any idea what time of week you're ok with people knocking on your door vs not? It's not like they came at 2am when the majority of people are asleep.

And this country was founded on the belief of Christianity. One God. One Nation. And just to make sure I say the most unpopular thing in the world. the one thing that has done the biggest amount of damage to this country is taking God out of our schools, homes, and even churches. I remember when praying was the most normal thing to do. Now if you bow your head in public someone wants to cry they're offended. Well be offended. This country needs to get back to it's roots. And back God.

Because it is the Lord's day. and it should be kept holy. Thats why. Some of us prefer to spend the morning at Ihop or Starbucks. Our preference is just as important.

I agree with 'whoever it was on here that mentioned Christmas and planning better'. I wish it was like it was in the 60s and no one was open on Christmas. I think people planned better because they knew if they didn't buy batteries or rolls or tea bags, etc... by Christmas Eve no place was open. Now people are out grocery shopping on Christmas Day because 'the stores are empty. People are home with their families.'

And we Jews get Friday night as well. The Sabbath is actually Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. A two-for-one, if you will. Plus certain holiday periods, such as the one we are in now. How strict you are depends on whether you are Reform, Conservative, Orthodox or Hasidic.

And back God. No it doesn't. We live in the land of the FREE. Free to make our own decisions about not only who or what we worship but whether or not we want to worship anything at all. Times change. We should work on being more TOLERANT of each other's differences rather than than trying to get everyone to conform to YOUR (people in general, not you specifically) beliefs.

And this country was founded on the belief of Christianity. One God. One Nation. No it wasn't. It was founded on the idea of religious freedom, not having a state sponsored religion, and the seperation of church and state. That's been enshrined in our founding documents from the beginning. Look, I don't care if you want to spend Sunday in prayer or whatever. I don't care if you pray in public. It's obnoxious when you do it really loudly or expect everyone to cater to your need to pray, but it's a free country, do what you want. Just don't try to use the government to force me to conform to your beliefs.

Nice breaks during work (if you aren't Muslim, because then you are tending to your spiritual health) and 2 days off plus your religious day off every weekend!
