What do you do with the heels from a loaf of bread? Sometimes we use them in a sandwich or for a piece of toast. Most of the time they get tossed. Once I was going to let them get stale and make bread crumbs but then got tired of the bread drying on the counter and threw the whole mess away.

You can throw them into the freezer until you need them... but I'll grind them and make bread crumbs, cube them and make croutons, or sometimes I'll take them for a whirl in my coffee grinder to clean it.

We either use them for toast or I make bread crumbs out of them to toss into a meatloaf.

Also, put one in with your brown sugar and it'll keep it from getting hard as a rock.

I usually leave the first heel in the sleeve until the loaf is at the end to keep the other pieces fresher. I then use the heals for an inside out grilled cheese sandwich or toss them out for the birds. I had a client that loved to make peanut butter sandwiches for the squirrels.

RoseGarden: My mom would always add them to the tupperware box when she baked cookies to keep them soft.

I love to keep the heels for things like sloppy joes, tuna melts, or garlic toast. I'll eat them toasted with peanut butter no problem as well.

I live alone and can never finish a whole loaf of bread so it really isn't a problem for me And I cannot stand frozen and then thawed bread - yuck..........

Try frozen to toasted, straight from the freezer to the toaster. It works.

I don't like frozen and thawed bread either, I'll try Later's suggestion. My favorite toast is made with bread heels. I don't like them "fresh" (unless it's homemade bread) but toasted with a little butter they are the best

I leave the first one there to help keep the loaf fresher. At the end of the loaf, if I need the two heels, I eat them. Otherwise, I toss them and go for a fresh loaf. By then, sometimes that first heel has a bite out of it anyway! (grin)

They are like any other slice of bread. I am going to put one in my brown sugar. I had a couple of large lumps in my brown sugar cookies over Xmas.

I also use mine for brown sugar, or I crumble them and use them for neutral breadcrumbs in recipes:) I never toss them.
I make homemade bread though, and haven't bought a loaf of bread in years.

I just toast them and eat them like any other slice. Unless I don't eat the bread fast enough and then of course it goes in the freezer or trash if I didn't think of it in time.

I eat it. Our loaves go in the freezer as soon as they come home from the store and are thawed and used as needed.

We put them underneath a meatloaf before we bake it and it absorbs a lot of the grease. We also keep our cookies fresh by putting it in the Rubbermaid container. I never heard about using it for brown sugar. That sounds like a good idea. If I have a heel left from my favorite ciabatta bread, that's the best to use for dipping into an olive oil mixture.

Cut it in cubes, then toast in a pan with a little (hot) olive oil and your favorite dried herbs. Or, save and grate to use for breadcrumbs, as others have suggested.

the same as everyone else. Save it until the loaf is to the end, toast it with PB. I keep my bread in the fridge. It lasts a whole lot longer and isn't soggy like when it is frozen.

Sharon: If you save the ends in the freezer, you can put them in a bowl with milk to let it them soften. I use them in meatloaf and such things.

Also, I scoop out french bread/rolls when I make pizza, Italian beef or sausage (saves calories & carbs) so I toast the scoopings and make breadcrumbs from them too.

We as one other poster, turn it "inside out" and use it as a regular piece of bread. One sees what looks like a regular slice of bread--maybe a little extra mayo or butter.
Put in with the brown sugar (although I have one of those discs one soaks in water) and/or put in with cookies or some other baked good that is threatening to get stale.
