I use them to make breadcrumbs, croutons or just toss them out for the birds. I've been known to mix the breadcrumbs with some PB and birdseen and put that on pinecones for the birds.

Has anyone mentioned feeding them to the ducks? My aunt used to save them for that when I was a kid. Going to feed the ducks ranked right up there with going to an amusement park for us.

I eat them just like any other piece. I think they make the best toast. DBF does not like them so he leaves them for me.

You know, my husband and daughter love the ends of bread. My son and I don't. So usually I reach back, leaving the end to get my bread. And when they come in, they fight to get the heels first.
Guess I'm lucky that way. In the absence of them, I'd probably throw it away.

I live alone and can never finish a whole loaf of bread so it really isn't a problem for me And I cannot stand frozen and then thawed bread - yuck.......... I hate frozen bread too. Suz...Publix bakery will split loaves of bread. We get 1/2 loaves all the time, because DH and I can't eat a whole one before it gets stale.

You can quickly dry out bread (or rolls or buns) in the microwave - so you don't need to leave it sitting on the counter. Sometimes the bread has so many preservatives or whatnot in it, it seems like it won't ever dry out naturally.
I save bread ends, unused rolls and buns in the freezer. I thaw what I need, sometimes put in the microwave to dry it out and then make breadcrumbs or if I don't dry it out first I'll cube it, drizzle it with olive oil and toss with seasonings and then either make the croutons in a skillet on the stovetop, spread on a jellyroll pan and toast in the oven or toast in small batches in the counter top toaster oven.
I also make stuffing from bread so I'll save it all up (in the freezer) and stuff a Roaster Chicken. Doesn't matter what mix of bread.

I save mine in the refrigerator to make French Toast. Sometimes use the ends for bread crumbs, sandwiches or toast.

I use bread heels as a special treat for my black lab. Sometimes I spread just a little peanut butter on a half a slice- she especially loves them that way!

I leave them on the loaf to protect the slices from air. My boyfriend eats them first and sometimes leaves one in the wrapper. I ate one tonight with a little peanut butter because it was the only slice in the wrapper. Then I opened a new bread and ate the slice after the end. When making grilled cheese sandwiches I put one end crust side towards the cheese and feed to DBF.

When it's homemade bread, everybody here stands in line begging the heels as soon as it's cool enough to cut. Since I'm the one who makes it, I get the first one When I was a kid, we saved hot dog and hamburger buns and the heels of store-bought bread to use in bread pudding, which was a real treat for us. I don't think anybody even makes it anymore. My kids liked it when they were little, but they probably wouldn't eat it now. When I made it, I'd either sort of marble jam into it before baking or wait until it was done, spread jam on top, cover it with meringue, and put it back in the oven to brown the meringue. The kids thought they'd died and gone to heaven, especially if it was made with stale hot dog/hamburger buns and/or raisin bread. Sounding like an EEer now...OT...something else my kids thought was a big treat was baked rice pudding still warm from the oven...for breakfast. Something I liked and still do and my kids loved, was tapioca pudding, the kind made from real pearl tapioca, not the instant knd. I guess probably nobody wants to spend that much time, or has that much time, slaving over a hot stove anymore.

I eat them!! Heels are the best part of the bread for me, and I'm also a big fan of bread crusts. None of this cutting crusts off of sandwiches for me!

I no longer even buy loaves of bread. We discovered sandwich thins and that's all we buy for sandwiches. I used to like to toast the heels - made the best toast. If I did use it in sandwiches, I simply put the mayo on the outside and turned it over.

Now that our children (well, not exactly children anymore, wonderful daughter 25, super son 29) are on their own, I turn it (the crust) inside out (as I posted before) so that it looks like a normal sandwich.
But when they were young, would collect them and feed the ducks at a local park. However, it is January in Montana; so there would be no duck feeding at this time, only collecting!

I feed them to my dog to bribe her to go inside her kennel before I leave the house This works out well since she LOVES bread for some odd reason and I never eat the heels anyway.

I toast them for me or the birds get them! But I'm like a lot of you...I leave that first one there to help keep the rest fresher. I buy at the day-old bread store & it all goes in the freezer. If I know we aren't going to be using much bread for a few days it will go in the fridge to help prolong life.

I had never heard of putting it in a tupperware of cookies, but I tried it this week when I made some cookies for my boys (husband and son) and, by golly, those cookies are still super soft and tasty! Thanks so much for the tip!! (Of course, my husband thought I was really weird when he saw the bread at the bottom of the tupperware container.)

Miss Rigby, we still make bread pudding (not as fancy as yours), stovetop rice pudding and real tapioca! All of them are considered major treats at my house and requested when the adult children come to visit. Nothing quite as comforting. Oh, and a pot of any plain rice at my house usually has a cup or two pulled before serving so there is enough leftover for rice pudding!
