Over the years, our politicians have created this enormous pork barrel of agencies that employ over 350,000 people directly and countless more via contracts with the State.. All of these people get salaries, medical coverage and pensions at taxpayer expense and almost all are unionized. Take a good, close look. Unbelievable? No. Believe it! And this is what those same Liberals would like to continue to do on a national level...

only one problem with this thread. california is not broke. Actually things are NOT beginning to be improve much, because of housing, crime, corruption, unemployment, and illegal immigrants ..However despite all of this the state revenues are increasing which only means our legisature in Sacramento CA will now spend more again for their liberal causes or agendas. And we have talk of southern california breaking away from the Golden State again.. Even the LA Dodgers are in deep financial trouble..

Cisco just announced on Friday they are going to lay off @13,000 employees, and small businesses in CA are not hiring because they fear a tax increase will be levied on them in the near future with Obama in the White House.
The only two areas in CA doing well are health care and banking and the rest are just trying to hang in there until Obama is sent packing back to Chicago Illinois.. Basically without consumer spending we are in for some rough days ahead ....our state has too much debt and now they have to pay the piper or go bankrupt

I'd LOVE to hear the liberals rationalize this mess. And you know what'll happen if any responsible politician proposes cutting any of this shit-- the statists will threaten voters with cutting policemen, firemen, and teachers.

only one problem with this thread. california is not broke. Probably "technically" correct.......for the time being. As soon as the state sees any kind of positive cash flow, it will get spent on even more nonsense stuff.

The statists are not threatening voters with cutting policemen, firemen and teachers they already did it....San Jose just laid off 200 policemen, Oakland laid off 60 policemen, and firehouses are being closed in many of our smaller towns out here. And because we have so many illegals in our jails they are being let go before they serve their time only to return to breaking into homes, cars and strong armed robberies especailly of seniors.. Time to watch the USA vs Japan World Cup Soccer... C'ya all later..

Why would tax keep anyone from hiring? More BS from the right, I had a small business as has my son. He needs to hire someone right now and he doesn’t give a shit about the tax ramification. It is the need three months down the road. He has many military and non-military projects that can stop anytime. The other problem is finding someone that can actually program CNC machines.

I'm sure you aren't condoning spending on nonsense items just because you have some extra money, right? As far as the state saving some money, yes, they should maintain some sort of "emergency fund" to cover unexpected shortfalls in revenue - just like you and I should do.

In fact, ZERO state income tax Texas added more than half of all the jobs added since Obama took office. If you want a job- you look for a RED state. The blue states simply are NOT hiring.

We have a Liberal Governor Jerry Brown and our state legislature in Sacramento CA is controlled by a Liberal Majority and of course these liberals all blame the financial problems in California on Republicans, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Georg Bush.. But the fact remains, I think our state is in deep trouble financially for one basic reason it spent far more than it received in state revenues. And California experienced rampant criminal and corrupt government officials at the state and local levels for years.. The fear now is that the pent up anger by the Californians may just take to the streets and we could see massive protests and rioting... hopefully that will not happen and the state economy will improve..

The pot was empty, The cupboard was bare. I said, Papa, What's the matter here? I'm waitin' on Roosevelt, son, Roosevelt, Roosevelt, Waitin' on Roosevelt, son. For the moment, jobless Americans are waiting on President Obama. If unemployment stays as high as many expect and millions exhaust their benefits, they may just find their voice in 2012. sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2011/07/17/BUO71K8H0K.DTL

"This list has to shock you."
I'm not shocked. Nor do I think the list is comprised solely of stupid or wasteful do-nothing bureaucracies. Frankly, I'm rather glad we have state universities and the U.C. system (included in the list) ~ not to mention the Attorney General's Office.

California's unemployment is well above the national average, and among the highest in the nation. and personally, i am loving that fact. it has been years since i had so many qualified people to choose from. look, paul, i know that i am the exception. i am used to that. but when people say "nobody is hiring" and shit like that, i have to speak up. i am hiring. we have a new guy starting this week. i grew 25% last year, and i hope to again this year. i just bought my own building. boom boom boom our county is one of the lowest three in the state for unemployment, the last i checked, so it is not that unusual where i live.

i think that is what states are supposed to do. in fact, it might be an interesting discussion for the deficit hawks. does the state have any business saving our money for emergencies? I'm sure you aren't condoning spending on nonsense items just because you have some extra money, right? of course not. i would LIKE IT if the state had a buffer. i am just not sure that most states allow for it.As far as the state saving some money, yes, they should maintain some sort of "emergency fund" to cover unexpected shortfalls in revenue - just like you and I should do. states are supposed to have balanced budgets. are they allowed to tax people to maintain a buffer? i am not sure. perhaps our constitutional expert Paul can answer it for us. he knows everything, after all.

So far as the great employment picture in Texas, that can't be right. I've run into ex-Texans who came to New York because they tell me that nobody but illegal aliens are getting jobs there.
It all depend on where your at (in the state) & what you do. There are a lot of jobs open here but you won't make huge money.

but i also don't think either he or myself are particularly "liberals", unless you are comparing us to Alan West or something.

No comment. why not? i am not easily offended, tex. but then again, i don't consider liberal an insult, either. one of the things i loved about Buckley was that he knew the difference between a liberal and a socialist. do you?

Our organization is hiring, as well, dj, as are others in the area. Admittedly, you're going to need some education and skills, but there are jobs.

Admittedly, you're going to need some education and skills, but there are jobs. i think there are plenty of opportunities around for skilled labor. the problem is that the economy is undergoing structural change, and that people are going to need to change with it. that means massive changes in the institution of education, primarily, if we are not going to witness something very destructive to the middle class that was once the pride of the world.
