"Bachmann signs pledge to ban pornography, same-sex marriage as president Minnesota Republican is the first presidential candidate to do so By Andy Birkey | 07.08.11 | 5:00 am Michele Bachmann became the first presidential candidate to sign a pledge by The Family Leader, an Iowa-based religious right group. The 14-point pledge (PDF) asks candidates to ban same-sex marriage, protect women and children from pornography and reject Islamic law. Signers also must promise to affirm that same-sex marriage is akin to polygamy and that having many children is good for America. The vow also insinuates that homosexuality is a choice, and that being gay or lesbian is a public health risk. The Family Leader, run by Bob Vander Plaats, has positioned itself as one of the most powerful Republican groups in the run up to the Iowa caucuses. The pledge contains 14 vows and several pages of footnotes. Vow nine states that GOP presidential candidates must “support human protection of women and the innocent fruit of conjugal intimacy” and protect them from “seduction into promiscuity and all forms of pornography.” Other vows ask candidates to oppose same-sex marriage and work toward making it illegal in states where it has been approved. The pledge also asks candidates to work to protect military personnel from “commingling among attracteds” in showers and barracks in a veiled reference to the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Toward the end of the long list of religious prohibitions, the pledge asks candidates to vow to oppose Sharia law because it is a “form of totalitarian control.” Footnote eight says that no scientific evidence exists to show that homosexuality is not changeable. Bachmann quickly signed the pledge on Thursday evening shortly after it was unveiled. Alice Stewart, a Bachmann aide, told the Des Moines Register that Bachmann had no qualms about signing The Family Leader’s pledge. “She has been married for over 30 years and has a strong marriage and faith.” Tim Pawlenty told the Register that he is reviewing the pledge." minnesotaindependent.com/83979/bachmann-signs-pledge-to-ban-all-pornography-as-president

To me this just proves what I've know all along. Both parties have nuts running for President. The sad thing is that sometimes they get elected (like President Obama). I would vote against this guy just as I would vote against President Obama.

I'm not sure why the OP is considered 'biased bullshit'? Do you have evidence that she did not sign the pledge? Or is it that the article spins the wording of the pledge? I would like to read the actual pledge...
ok... I read it... that thing scares the bejeezes out of me on so many levels i can hardly begin.... If she did sign it, I see SERIOUS problems (of course i saw many of them already.... )...
But that pledge is ridiculous... her signing it is just proof of insanity in my opinon...
Since when has the definition of marriage included faithful monogomy? .... If it is so defined... then are there legal repricussions for adultery? Are we going back to scarlet letters?
Recognition that robust childbearing is beneficial? ... Honestly? Is this a Quiverfull organization?
And their 'rationale' section..... sure, slavery was bad... but at least more kids born into slavery were raised by their mother AND father (unless... you know... the owner sold them like the property they were- added by me...)

Did it count as "raised by" when dear old Dad and owner were the same person (e.g. Tommy Jefferson)?

Lol...you guys are funny. An article from the Minnesota Independant is biased bs Couldn't hace said it better myself. But, in case you didn't know..... The Minnesota Independent's focus and editorial slant is politically liberal. Fellows have been drawn from mainstream media outlets including City Pages and the Star Tribune, as well from the liberal blogging community in Minnesota. The site features a code of ethics that reads in part, "New Journalist Fellows should be honest, tireless, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information for the public. It's also funded by the American Independent News Network The American Independent News Network supports a number of writing fellows. Spencer Ackerman, who has written for The New Republic and Talking Points Memo writes for The Washington Independent. Ed Brayton, a freelance writer who blogs at Dispatches from the Culture Wars, is the state editor for The Michigan Messenger. John Tomasic previously edited Huffington Post's Off the Bus and is the current editor of The Colorado Independent.
Alumni of The American Independent News Network include David Weigel, formerly with The Washington Independent, is a blogger for Slate magazine; Mike Lillis, formerly with The Washington Independent, is now writing for The Hill (newspaper); and Wendy Norris, formerly the editor of The Colorado Independent, is now the editor and publisher of Western Citizen. Yeah, I believe they could be considered a bit biased.

You know how it is here ugonow..... if it's not anti-Obama, then it's biased, wrong, not accepted, etc. For some folks, the only acceptable source is what God tells them or whatever they are calling the voices in their heads this week.

Some posters here keep saying they will ignore other posters, or are finished posting at P&M, and yet they keep coming back for more action. Like a moth and a flame, they cannot stay away

What I was trying to say in the last post is, it is ironic how posters here talk about their own pledges to fellow posters, but they always fail to follow thru on their pledge, but will hang anyone else from the other side of the political aisle for any pledge they make. Of course, I do not think anyone here is actually running for the Presidency, so I assume we cannot hold said posters to the pledges.......

Not any pledge... but this one is a doozy... either she's way, way out there for believing in those things she signed.... or she will sign anything because she has no intention of following thru...

Who said they were going to stop/ignore? I took a break from the P&M boards for awhile.... that's what he's whining about. But nowhere will he be able to find a "goodbye P&M" post. I didn't announce I was taking a break.... I just did.

what "pledge" did posters here take? hmmmmmm? Got anything other than hot air to back up this statement? Steff, you take it way too personal. It is not always about you. I admit, I posted my comment based on your post, but I was also referring to another poster on another thread who swore she would hit "ignore" on another poster, but continuously stalks said poster. Kind of a sad situation. You yourself, have left the board with a public announcement, but continue back. A moth attracted to the flame. I admit that it describes me. Just admit it. You love the cantankerous nature of the give and take. It's ok to admit it. It is even cathartic. It's good for the soul (if you believe in one, which I do) I really like you and miss the back and forth! Stick around. You are good for the board, although I disagree with you most of the time...

The parts of the pledge listed in the OP are not unreasonable in my opinion. Maybe the original poster could list all the items and discuss them one by one.

This is just Bachmann pandering to the religious right. Presidential candidates LOVE making promises and pledges they know damned well they could never follow through with. Bushie Jr. preached the same load of manure when he campaigned for his second term, then quickly lost the support of the religious right when it became clear that, no, abortion will not be made illegal and no, same-sex marriages will not be outlawed, etc. etc.
When you actually walk into the Oval Office and sit down in that chair for the first time, everything changes. A lot of presidents try to campaign on idealism, and sometimes they win, but once in office, all of that crap flies right out the window when the reality of power politics takes hold.
Bachmann will be no different even if she does win. If she tries to make her personal opinions into law, she'll be eaten alive.
