I still think that Bachmann has a chance of winning the primary due to the hard core righties voting her in, but acts such as this one lead me to believe that Bachmann is not in it to win it, but rather she is in it to sell future books and give expensive speeches. She cannot possibly think she could win a general election after a stunt like this.

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

I really don't think Bachmann has a snowball's chance in hell of even getting nominated, much less elected. I think conservatives, like liberals and other parties, have a certain cadre that teeters on the brink of in-freaking-sanity. I honestly don't believe there are enough of these to nominate/elect anybody. For that, I'm very, very thankful.

It would be scary for her to get that close to the presidency.

I hope I'm right, as well, Virginia. Coming from a highly conservative state, I do find most of the people with whom I come in contact aren't totally unreasonable. They're not really all that hard-right. I see most as right-leaning, some more heavily so than others. I know very, very few I'd consider to be teetering on that ragged edge.

Republicans have a good chance of winning in 2012, but not if they get hot and heavy with issues like gay marriage, don't ask don't tell, and abortion. The country is deep in the grip of troubled economic and financial times, and it's just silly to be spending time on things like this. All republicans will do if they start in on social issues like this is alienate moderate voters. The religious right will vote for them regardless in a general election, they need to keep their eye on the ball to convince swing voters (jobs, the economy, ect).

Someone asked for specifics from the pledge. Here are some of my favorites: *Vigorous opposition to any redefintion of the Insitution of Marriage- faithful monogamy between one man and one woman- through statuatory, bureaucratic, or court imposed recognition of intimate unions wihich aer bigamous, polygamous, polyandrous, same-set, etc. *Recognition of the overwhelming statistical evidence that married people enjoy better health, better sex, longer lives, greater financial stability and that children raised by a mother and a father together experience better learning, less addiction, less legal trouble and less extramarital pregnancy. * Support for prompt reform of uneconomic, anti-marriage aspects of welfare policy, tax policy, and marital/divorce law, and extneded 'second chance' or 'cooling off' periods for those seeking a 'quickie divorce'. *Humane protection of women and the innocent fruits of conjugal intimacy- from human trafficking, sexual slavery, seduction into promiscuity, and all forms of pornography and prostitution, infanticide, abortion and other types of coercion or stolen innocence. * Recognition that robust childbearing and reproduction is beneficial to U.S. demographic, economic, strategic and actuarial health and security. * Fierce defense of the First Amendment's rights of Religious Liberty and Freedom of Speech, especially against intolerance of any who would undermine law-abiding American citizens and institutions of faith and conscience for their adherence to, and defence of, faithful herosexual monogomy. There is also that interesting phrasing in one spot against 'instrusively intimate commingling among attracteds' in the military defence statement... but i'm tired of typing... images.minnesotaindependent.com/The-Family-Leader-Presidential-Pledge.pdf

Personally I'm thankful there are still politicians willing to sign their names to such pledges of commitment, even if it ruins their election chances. Thanks for getting this out there for us, oped. It's a pity that Ms. Bachmann's views are so incompatible with your own.

*Recognition of the overwhelming statistical evidence that married people enjoy better health, better sex, longer lives, greater financial stability and that children raised by a mother and a father together experience better learning, less addiction, less legal trouble and less extramarital pregnancy." Who has a problem with this? Read any number studied and you'll find that married people have better health, longer lives, and better finances as a group than single people. There really is research to back this up. Also you'll find numorous studies that show kids who have both a MOTHER and FATHER statistically have a better quality of life and better outcome. Promoting marriage is only a good thing. Here's a couple articles I found really fast. www.psychpage.com/family/library/brwaitgalligher.htmlwww.dadsworld.com/parenting-statistics/importance-of-fathers.html
