Today is my birthday... DH came home last night asking me to help unload a new TV he bought himself for my birthday... he quickly said it was actually a gift for me that he'll also enjoy... except we didn't need a new TV. The 62' TV in our room is just fine along with the other 3 in the house.
Has this or something similar ever happened to you?

Thankfully no. But my old boss told me her husband and kids bought her a pooper scooper for mothers day once. And they were serious! The only way I can see that working is if it came with a year off of doggy duty!

LOL!! YES!! The first year DH and I were married, he bought me a tackle box, fishing pole and accessories for my birthday so we could "go fishing" together. I told him fishing was his hobby, not mine. I'm fine with going fishing with him, but under no circumstances was he to get me anything fishing related for my birthday, Christmas, anniversary or any other gift giving occassion ever again. I was fine with using his cast off equipment, it didn't need to be new or "just mine". After about 5 years of him whining that he didn't know what to get me, I did modify the "rule" a little with him and said a fishing related item could be "a" gift, but not "the" gift as my present (like a certain crappie bait I like could be in my Christmas stocking for example). He's learned that jewelry is always acceptable.

...:::"The only way I can see that working is if it came with a year off of doggy duty!":::... Maybe I'll try this on DF -- like actually give her the tool to do a chore, then open a door and present the maid that goes with it DF is VERY hard to shop for because she is very picky about what actually "counts" as a birthday present. Christmas and anniversary are easier, but apparently just because she says she wants something does not make it a good birthday present. I once misinterpreted "I'd love to have the ravioli attachment for the kitchen aid" as her wanting the ravioli attachment for the kitchen aid (and I actually MAKE ravioli). Damn you all, I tried to repress that...

To be fair, I once got a grey toilet for my anniversary. Like an idiot, I went with colored bathroom fixtures, grey ones, when we were building. Toilet busts and there is no longer grey replacements so DF scoured the planet and finally found me one, just happened to come in on our anniversary so I like to joke that he got me a toilet for our anniversary present. 'Course we aren't married anymore so the joke is stale.

I keep a list on the fridge of gift suggestions for DH for b-days, Christmas, Mother's Day, anniversaries and "just because you love me" and it usually get ignored. I need to update it, now that I think about it.

I got ice cube trays one year for my birthday. He remembered that I had said we needed some new ones a few weeks before so he just knew that it would make me ecstatic to get them!

dh bought me a printer for my bday one year. didn't ask for one, don't really need one. it wasn't wrapped or anything. it was sitting on the table. "what's that" "your present" hmmm.... I also got a shop vac for christmas. He also has the philosophy that if I mention we should get something for the house it's a good present. nope, not unless i make that clear.
Ok I was gracious enough on those but explained that I expect a present to be for me, not the house unless I ask, and it must be wrapped even if it's just something small.
A friend of ours got his wife video games so they could play together. she was NOT interested
ETA: I also have to add that my dh is almost always really good at giving me gifts. Sometimes I wonder how he knows what I wanted so well! he did and still does sometimes need some guy training on the practical vs. sentimental value of gifts.

The 62' TV in our room is just fine I'm trying to envision a 62-foot television.

This kind of happened to me yesterday. Granted, I didn't give DH anything to go on this year, because I honestly couldn't think of anything I wanted/needed that is in the birthday present price range. He ended up getting me a Nook-color. On it's surface, an e-reader is a great idea. I do love to read. But I really, really love BOOKS. And the Nook-color is kind of heavy and the screen is really bright. I'm not sure it's going to be comfortable to hold for long periods of time. I don't know that I'm willing to buy a bunch of e-books (I mostly get my current reading material via borrowing from friends or picking up cheap paperbacks second-hand.) I'm going to give it an honest effort for the 14 day window I have to return it, but I'm not sure it's the gadget for me. Even though DH handed me the package with the words "If you don't like this you can return it....", I think he'll probably be crushed if I return it, try a much-lighted e-ink Kindle instead, or keep the Nook but don't end up using it much. I know he did a lot of research, but I think he was looking at it from a guy's perspective of all the cool things it could do. ("It's like an iPad, but much more affordable!!") I could totally tell he wanted it so that he could borrow it when he needs to travel.
Here's hoping I'll just decide I love the damn thing in the next two weeks!
ETA: In general, DH is very good at presents. And I sincerely appreciate the effort he put into this one, but now I feel pressure to try and protect his feelings!!

I guess DH and I are weird. We don't buy each other presents unless it's something really small, like I got him a package of starburst for Father's Day because it's his favorite candy.

Our new TV story:
One day I was watching TV and the remote wouldn't work. Changed batteries, but nope - had dropped it one too many times. Went outside where DH was working and said, "The remote is broken, we need a new TV!" DH was shocked I had said that and actually argued with me that we just needed a new remote. ((I was joking, just thought I'd see what he'd say))
The next day, DH calls me and said, "Damn you woman!! All I've been thinking about all day is a new TV!!" He then informed me he was on his way to the store to pick up a new remote.
I got home before he did and found a check in the mail for almost $1500 that we were not expecting. Turns out we were part of a class action lawsuit we knew nothing about regarding purchasing our pick up truck and something to do with insurance fraud and the payments we had been making. Checked it out by calling the number listed, it was legit, so I called DH back, "Don't open that remote package yet!! We're going shopping!!"
We picked out a 42" flat panel that night, and the rest is history! ;D

Our first Christmas together DBF bought me a DVD player because mine was 'special.' It worked 90% of the time. Only he got annoyed. So guess what I got for Christmas?
One year my aunt and uncle bought each other the exact same TV for Christmas. They had to figure out which one to take back.

Regarding the Nook reader - can you borrow e-books to read on your Nook from your library?

Happy birthday Insmoneymaven! It could be worse, though... you could be 14-year-old me, who broke up with DH on his 15th birthday (Luckily 12 years later he has almost forgiven me...)

After 35 years of being married, there isn't a lot DH or I need. If there is something larger we want - my netbook, a Blu-Ray player, etc. - we'll call it a birthday present, but it's by no means a surprise. I told my DH exactly what I wanted in my netbook and he ordered it. DH wanted a Blu-Ray player and researched and ordered it. That's his birthday present for tomorrow.
DH tells me every day that he loves me. Presents are just secondary.
BTW, while TVs are nice presents, I can't imagine buying something so large without getting input from my DH before buying it.

I would respond by getting a very nice kitchen appliance or something else you would enjoy for his birthday!

We had to deal with that a year or two ago. FIL bought MIL a new flat screen that they didn't need as her Christmas present. He asked the kids to chip in on it and we turned him down because we knew MIL didn't want a new TV. Then MIL was trying to buy the same tv for FIL (since he did want it) and we eventually had to tell her not to since FIL already had. It was a sticky situation with the kids stuck in the middle!

Hey - we have "Overdrive" for our library, and it took me a long time to figure out how to use it with the Nook - but I did figure it out. I ended up writing instructions on how to do it, because I could never remember. So, if you find out you do have overdrive and you want to see my instructions, send me a PM and I'll get them over to you.
I do remember you had to download some adobe reader thing onto your PC, and then download the book onto the PC, and it was only certain formats, and then copy the book to the Nook. But - totally cool, and totally worth it.
