Women are just nearly impossible to shop for universally. Individually it's a different story. But the standard flowers, jewelry, chocolate answer doesn't work all the time.

Don't buy me jewelry, I won't wear it. I don't mind a useful gift as long as I wanted it. You buy me something YOU wanted and I'll beat you. I got a cappuccino maker one year for Xmas. I don't drink coffee.

I get that Strider and it's a valid point because just as I don't care about jewelry some guy isn't going to want tools all the time either.

...:::"DH is always saying that the only guys who buy lingerie for their wives are just shopping for themselves.":::...
This implies that the woman, upon receiving the item she clearly doesn't like or didn't want, is still going to put it on. What good does it do buying sexy lingerie when she isn't going to wear it?

I'm into TV seasons myself (Mad Men and Breaking Bad) and outdoors gear. I don't want power tools to fix every item in the house. If it's broken I fix it but I don't tinker to tinker.

The first Christmas of my marriage, now ex-h and I were broke and I had recently learned of all the consumer debt I had just married. We agreed that we would spend no more than $50 on each other's gift. (OK, it WAS my idea, but truthfully we couldn't afford even that, and he did agree.) The very next day, he ran out and financed a personal computer for ME. At Sears, something like 21% interest. And a whole bunch of games which I was just DYING to have, like "Police Quest" at about $50 a pop. Then his parents ran out and financed a computer desk for us.
He had wanted to use our wedding gift money to buy a computer, but I had insisted that we use it to pay down his debt. So we did. So wasn't it lucky that I got a financed computer we couldn't afford, which I didn't want in the first place, for Christmas? Lucky me.
I should have known right then.

Oh, Petunia, I'm so sorry. BIL is a bitch to buy for - he likes some books, movies if he's seen them (and he already owns all his favorites) and no tools. I end up getting him waffle irons and cooking stuff and hope to God I'm not repeating myself. Sister once got a vacuum. All I know is - it never happened again. OP, have you mentioned to your husband that since it's your birthday present (happy birthday btw), you're going to return it?

These kinds of stories always make me feel stupid for sticking with someone who won't tolerate this kind of nonsense. I'd love to be able to get away with something like this once in a while.

Wewillbegrown,
You feel sorry for being smarter than my BIL? Smarter, more considerate, etc.
Why would you want to achieve downwards?

Thank you for the birthday wishes!
Well, DH is keeping the TV and I really don't care. We have 3 accounts - one joint, each a personal. As long as the mutual bills are paid, I don't care how he spends the money in his account. DH is responsible financially, probably more so that I am. I am mad, in a small way, that DH didn't get me a gift for my birthday, despite telling him exactly (down to item number and purchase instructions) what I would have liked.

Even my kids know better than to pull that crap. Your DH either thinks you are stupid or his mother was treated disrespectfully as well.

Its more like once in a while when I DO make a silly mistake, I'd like to get away with it. I fear DF's birthday every year. So much pressure to get the "perfect gift". But she is the type who is always fixated on things she wants, so very rarely is there a great gem of a present that she'll forget about long enough for me to buy it and surprise her with it.

Have you had any success with experiential gifts with her? Many of my favorite gifts from DH have been tickets of various kinds (Vegas show, Broadway show, concert tickets, tickets to see my college bball team play - back when they were REALLY good in 2004....).

Maybe, but how do you know that we aren't quietly slipping a few laxatives in your dinner? Women always, always return the favor... DF asks what I want for B-Day & Christmas... This works fine for us... ;D

. He ended up getting me a Nook-color. On it's surface, an e-reader is a great idea. I do love to read. But I really, really love BOOKS. And the Nook-color is kind of heavy and the screen is really bright. I'm not sure it's going to be comfortable to hold for long periods of time. I don't know that I'm willing to buy a bunch of e-books (I mostly get my current reading material via borrowing from friends or picking up cheap paperbacks second-hand.) I requested a Nook Color for Christmas and I LOVE IT. I have not bought a single book since Christmas nor physically gone to the library. I borrow almost all my books from the library and take advantage of Nook's Free Friday selection. We are currently on vacation and I just started my 3rd book last night - it's so great to finish a book and all I have to do is open a new one on the Nook. And I didn't have to pack multiple books! I don't have a problem with the weight or the backlight. I've read it in the car (hubby driving!) and I just turned the brightness up higher. The weight isn't a problem, either. I usually have it propped on my lap or against something if I'm reading while eating. And that's another advantage to an eReader - you don't have to wedge the book open if you are trying to eat and read (I even read while brushing my teeth!). Seriously, if you can get over the mental hump of not holding a book in your hand - you will LOVE your Nook. It is extremely convenient. The only thing they need to improve is the process of borrowing library books (you have to first download them to your home computer, then hook up the Nook and transfer them). But it's great to have had 3 library books already on my Nook when we left for this vacation.
