We buy ours at Costco or Sam's, it seems to be the cheapest for bulk purchases (I'm in Indiana). Last week we got a 24-pack of the Sam Adams summer sampler for $20.99. My mom's ex-bf owned a liquor store and his wholesale price wasn't much lower than Sam's. (Though if you go into a liquor store and chat up the attendant a bit, you may be able to get a wholesale discount... we're friendly around these parts)

So what is the point of buying the liquor in the Midwest? Why can't you just buy it where you live?

If you're driving through Indianapolis, Bloomington, or Columbus, I can give some more specific recommendations... I am pretty familiar with the liquor stores in those areas ;D

Are there laws regulating buying bulk liquor in one state and transporting it to a different state?

Molly, there would definitely be laws against that in Alabama. Our "sin taxes" are extremely high, and the "cheapest" place to be liquor is at the state store (which is expensive enough). Every other place has to make an additional profit so it's higher than the state store.
My DH says Cuervo tequilla is about $7 more in Alabama than in Arizona.

Yes, and I blatantly ignore them. ;D MA just got rid of a tax that was assessed on the alcohol that we already pay at tax on. There was a lot of hand wringing and carrying on because "how will we ever pay for alcohol education and treatment programs?" Umm, the same way you did six months ago before you decided to tax the tax. Maybe I'm not as law abiding as I thought. I also speed. Frequently.

Check out WI. We just raised our liquor taxes, but our liquor lobby is very strong...so our liquor is taxed much lower than other things that have sin taxes.

IL is in quite the budget mess, so sin taxes like liquor are probably high. That's not even taking into account the Wirtz impact. But if you decide to buy I'd look into Sam's Wine & Liquor (not to be confused with Sam's Club), Kenwood or Binny's. Ask about their return policies. Many are often happy to accept returns on unopened bottles. But confirm first and learn about any restocking charge. Let the event staff know this too, I've seen staff crack all of the bottles open at the start to make pouring easier.

Is MM coming for a visit? As long as she gives up advance notice to warn the breweries. ;D

I live in Indiana near the Ohio border. The excise police sometimes watch for Ohio car licenses at the liquor stores - follow them over the border. As far as I know they don't actually arrest anyone - but liquor has been confiscated. I think there were fines involved, also. (It's been a while since I've talked to anyone who actually got caught.)
Being the law abiding person (or coward) that I am I wouldn't risk it. But if you do - definitely not in a border town.

I like more expensive craft brews, so I generally go to the brewery (for now- I don't know how things are going to shake out in Wisconsin with the new rules). I like New Glarus (Wisconsin) and Three Floyds (Indiana). For booze- Binny's, or the duty free shop in the Bahama's.

If you're going to do it, pick Ohio or Illinois. I think it's a felony to ship wine to Indiana. It may not be one to buy it there and ship it out, but states that have tough liquor laws, tend to have tough liquor laws all the way around.
Ohio should have cheaper sales taxes.
Have you checked on line to see if any of the big distributors will ship to you? That may be the cheapest way to get it.

So what is the point of buying the liquor in the Midwest? Why can't you just buy it where you live? I'm buying bulk liquor for a wedding. I live in Illinois and wedding will be in Ohio. Hence, it's convenient to buy it in Illinois, Indiana or Ohio. Illinois would seem to have the highest taxes of the 3...my guess would be that Indiana would make the most sense. It can depend on where in Ohio...Cuyahoga county has one of the highest sales tax rates in the state at 7.75%, but other counties can have as low as 6.25%. Indiana is a flat 7%. I agree, stay away from Illinois, that state trumps the other two (This assumes, as well, that there aren't special liquor taxes in any of these states)

I think I saw something that said enterance fees today from 1-5pm were $0.50. So at least we wouldn't break our entertainment budgets getting in the grounds...
