And while you're at it, don't let them put a slice of lemon in your tea or soda....restaurant workers slice those without gloves on, and they sit, festering in a plastic container for days. Ew. No worry there. I bring my own water bottle. But thanks for the advice.

One five-second walk through a scanner isn't going to give you cancer or radiation poisoning. Why then are the pilots refusing to do it? Because they are in the airports every day; you are in the airport on the rarest of occasion.

Hrmm... if I go through the scanner and write a message on my stomach, will the people viewing the video screen see it?

news.discovery.com/human/travel-body-scanners-radiation.htmlMost people are unaware about the fact that there is significant radiation exposure associated with air travel because they are well above the Earth's atmosphere," said Robert J. Barish, a radiological and health physicist in New York City. "You'd get as much radiation in a whole-body scanner as you'd get in two minutes at 30,000 feet."So I'd be more worried about how long your flight is going to be. But flying raises real risks for pilots, flight attendants, and the half a million business travelers who spend much of their time in the air. So going thru a body scanner for flight crew is just adding to what they are already exposed to. If you are a business frequent flyer who travels more than 85,000 miles a year on typical cross-country, international-type routes, your exposure goes above the limits that you would be allowed if those exposures came from any kind of medical, industrial, nuclear or other sources here on the planet," Barish said. "It takes only seven trips from New York to Tokyo to exceed the general public limits."Doubt this is you

LA808 - If you read or talk to people who've had the personal pat down you may find out that it is unacceptable for you. TSA handlers are quite firm handed when they hit you in the personal areas - it is not pleasant.
You fly so rarely, I would really encourage you to do the scan if you are selected.
Have you ever used the air filter that hangs from your neck & blows 'clean air' to you while flying? I was thinking about getting one for my sister because she picks up airborne germs quite easily. Just wondering if they really work.

As many here know, I am very germaphobic when it comes to germs from strangers. I will need to fly soon and refuse to go through the scanner. I don't mind getting groped by strange hands, but I do mind getting groped with gloves that have been up a hundred crotches and armpits and in peoples hair. Has anyone here ever asked the security officer to put on a new pair of gloves before the search? Would I be out of line to even ask that this be done? I'm serious....I really need to take this trip and don't think I can fly knowing there are creepy crawlies all over me. you are absolutely entitled to ask for a new pair of gloves. expect to wait for that agent to take her sweet time tracking down a pair though, in the hopes that you'll just say 'the hell with it, go ahead'. I fully intend to do this tomorrow when I fly out as well. I got tagged for a random luggage search a few years back. I got to the room where these searches were done in time to see the agent pawing through a family's obviously dirty laundry, as they were about to head home on vacation. well, I was on my way to a work trip and still needed to wear the stuff in my luggage. I insisted that a new pair of gloves be worn. the agent looked, and couldn't find any. I said then take them off. I have no doubt that you wash your hands often at work because of what you're doing, but under no circumstances do I want whatever your gloves picked up in that last suitcase being transferred to my clean stuff. good luck on your travels.

Don't forget the shower cap to wear in flight! You don't want your head to touch those filthy back rests.

LA, I have no doubt that you are as germophobic as you appear. You also seem to be worried/frightened by a lot of other things that other people don't worry too much about. I know someone already mentioned it in this thread, but you really should seek help. Your fears are at an irrational level and I can imagine they can be quite crippling for you to even make it through a day doing what other people do on a regular every day basis. Your fears are beyond what would be considered legitimate or rational. MM, Thanks. I'm totally aware of everything you stated and how crippling it is, but can't see how professional help would do much good. I've done just about everything I can think of to reprogram my thoughts. Aside from getting drunk, nothing works.

There's no harm in trying -- you never know, it may help a little, or at least help you develop some coping mechanisms.

La, I don't think it is funny. I would bring my own set of gloves and put my handkerchief over the headrest. Planes are filthy!
ETA: I went through a lot of handkerchiefs. No, I am not bald. I just have a high forehead.

The last three times I have flown I have been randomly selected from a giant group of people in line to go through the full body scanner. I wondered if it was my 32DDs that needed inspection. The first time my DH asked if he could get a copy of the photo. The TSA lady didn't think that was funny.

When we flew the week before Christmas the process was the same as it has been for the past few years. There were no scanners in either airport and I was denied an invasive pat down. No TSA agents were patting down anyone.
Are you sure there are increased security measures at the airports you will be in?
