Earlier this year, NASA predicted that a storm could be provoked by a peak in the sun's energy cycle around 2013, leaving Britain without crucial communication signals for extended periods of time." Wow I'm glad that I saw this. I'm not going to waste any time (only 2 years prep time). I'm starting make my super industrial tinfoil hat TONIGHT! Oh & just in case the sun gets really hot I'll buy an umbrella & one bottled water.

I am sincerely sorry for your luck Neoh.
My sister (who is NOT a nut) has been following Jesse Ventura on this one.
QUITE the conspiracy theory!!!
There's a solar observatory built out in the middle of Big Bear Lake in SoCal - watches the sun all the time. I think its still there. I've visited several times - watching the surface up close is a WAY cool thing to do! Mesmerizing...

Why are you guys poking fun at Comokate??
It's a scientific fact that Solar Flares have caused problems with satellites in the past and a major flare could potentially cause major damage here on earth as well.
Comokate, I believe any of the major communications companies could potentially benefit - Such as Motorola, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Loral space & technologies ---- I would only invest in companies that I thought were a good buy in general though because as far as I know - no one can predict major solar flares with any certainty. If you happen to invest in a good company that happens to benefit all the better.

Possible natural/man made disasters are beyond my control. I prepare for them like I would a hundred year snow/rain storm. I keep an adequate supply of food/drinking water/fuel to last ~1 month. Btw virginian, you have a cool avatar.

Nothing intended. After several visits to a solar observatory - flares are very real and do cause problems! Of course!
Bunkers for rich people maybe? Or are they already built?
If I recall - and its been QUITE awhile - flares follow a 20 year or so cycle?

Maybe that is why one of the greatest astronomer civilizations in history(Mayans) discovered that something catastrophic would happen around 2013 (2012 December 21st). Maybe it could just have a huge magnetic affect to lay waste to our electrical system and put us back into the stone age for a few months. OOOHHHH NOOOESSS!!!!!! What would the new age children do without electricity? I would personally kick them out and tell them to use their imaginations with sticks and stone .

I think dr puma said it the best during a similar discussion on the old boards: "all you need is 2000 calories a day and a warm place to sleep".

If you happen to invest in a good company that happens to benefit all the better. "6 Jan 09 - The National Academy of Sciences just released the results of a study examining what might happen to our high-tech society in the event of a super solar flare followed by an extreme geomagnetic storm. Such an event in 1859 electrified telegraph lines, shocking technicians and setting telegraph papers on fire. Northern Lights lit up the sky as far south as Cuba, and were so bright that "you could read a newspaper by their eerie glow."
According to the report, "a contemporary repetition of that event would cause significantly more extensive (and possibly catastrophic) social and economic disruptions." The report warns of widespread failures in telecommunications, electric power, banking and finance, and transportation; even water supplies could be disrupted.
No one knows how often super solar storms occur. We've only seen one like it in the past 200 years. The next one could be another 200 years away--or just 200 days. All the more reason to study space weather!"
www.spaceweather.com/"Natural disasters" happen all of the time. The sun is ramping up for a great, big, overdue flare. Great Britain is already concerned enough to be looking into purchasing protection for their power grids...we tend to wait until bridges and Metrodomes fall from the sky... A few weeks ago we had back to back blizzards here that left drifts up to our waists and windowsills. Local merchants could not keep enough snow shovels in stock. It took over ten days for city crews to clear all streets of snow. My street was not plowed until three days after the snowfall ( you really learn to "help thy neighbor" in our area). I'm just sayin' ....

Why don't you boys grow up and talk to a the lady with some respect!!! You dont' have to agree, but for God's sake, she's making some valid points here. You all are so quite to jump on someone that brings up something outside of your comfort zone, without any research.
Let's hear her out before you disagree. It's not like you boys just disagree with topics you can't handle, you attack and poke fun at it before even exploring the topic at hand. Como, don't listen to these fools, keep up the good posts. Karma coming your way soon, I promise.

Mid, thanks for the support, but don't fret. In my line of work I've had people bite, vomit, bleed, sneeze, spit , etc. , upon me. For over two decades. Compared to all of that, this is a cake walk.

www.universetoday.com/14645/2012-no-killer-solar-flare/Some good reading on the subject. Solar flares:if strong enough could possibly take down the power grid and wipe sat.coms for several months... The trouble is there hasn't been one in modern times that was strong enough to make a big impact on the current society. So it is alot of conjecture.
