Today is a anniversary of one of the most momentous days of glory , IMHO, of our country and that of our Allies back in the day. It was not a slam dunk that we and our allies would win this war when it started. The Germans had been preparing for years for this occasion as had the Japanese and the rest of the world basically slept through their pre war preparations.
Finally on this day in June of 1944, all the defeats, set backs were behind us and we and our allies, we had built ourselves up again and were about to take the big step to end this thing finally and forever.
General Eisenhower , Allied supreme commander in Europe, spoke these few lines to his men as the invasion was to be gotten underway, I thought I would share them with you. It was 67 years ago today, a long time ago but not that long ago. I was a kid, my Dad was overseas in England and would go into Europe and fight till the end with Pat tons Third Army, ..so to me , vaguely remembered..for those to young, it still is and was a momentous achievement and those who partook should be honored IMHO, thus the post. -------------------------------------------------
General Dwight D. Eisenhower (Ike) D-Day Message Order of the Day: 6 June 1944
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUPREME HEADQUARTERS ALLIED EXPEDITIONARY FORCE Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.
Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.
But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!
I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!
Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.
SIGNED: Dwight D. Eisenhower

Why are you pretending to admire that? Ike would be run out on a rail by the left wing for giving a speech like that today...it would have cost him the presidency. Plus he was a war hero, another thing the left perceives as a negative...

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking. And a general (representative of the United States) asking for a blessing from God? Another huge liberal no no. Sometimes deziloooooo I get the feeling that there's hope for you yet.....& then you go & mess it up with a post like the one on Israel.

A momentous day in history. Ed, you have a point too though. Have you wondered, If WWII were being fought today.....how would things play out? Imagine news correspondants reporting on allied carpet bombing in Germany, from inside those cities in Germany? Goebbels would have had a field day with' live' reporting into livingrooms around the world. Images of massive civilian casualties while all access and information about the concentration camps remained hidden and off limits.

We would lose. To much time would be wasted trying to find out "Why" Germany was trying to make trouble & what were their true feelings.
Images of massive civilian casualties while all access and information about the concentration camps remained hidden and off limits.
Yes the concentration camp info wouldn't have come out. Just not believeable & besides it might be taken that we were condeming a whole country.

I agree with a lot of what is shown there. Obama is an extension of the Bush policies and he will not get my vote in 2012. I had decided that a while back. I also cannot vote for any of the clowns that are running for the republican nomination, except for Ron Paul if he runs. IMO, all of them would continue to sink the country as Bush and Obama have done. I will end up throwing my vote away on a 3rd party or independent candidate.

THIS is why we are in trouble. THOUGHTFUL and observant people of both parties see this. THIS is where the guns and ammo people come in play, and it is scary as shit.

Sweet-- those are wasted votes. What do we do? Well, we try and get better informed each day and try to hold our politicians accountable. We vote our conscious and get involved as much as we can.

IMO, all of them would continue to sink the country as Bush and Obama have done. I will end up throwing my vote away on a 3rd party or independent candidate. 140 different clowns (141 counting Obama) have filed their Statement of Candidacy to run for POTUS in 2012, including Ron Paul. Have you researched every one of them? fec.gov/press/press2011/presidential_form2nm.shtmlIMHO, you need to check out Gary Johnson. www.garyjohnson2012.com/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_JohnsonAndrew Sullivan claimed that Johnson "is highly regarded in the state for his outstanding leadership during two terms as governor. He slashed the size of state government during his term and left the state with a large budget surplus." According to one New Mexico paper, "Johnson left the state fiscally solid," and was "arguably the most popular governor of the decade . . . leaving the state with a $1 billion budget surplus." The Washington Times has reported that when Johnson left office, "the size of state government had been substantially reduced and New Mexico was enjoying a large budget surplus."
According to a profile of Johnson in the National Review, "During his tenure, he vetoed more bills than the other 49 governors combined — 750 in total, one third of which had been introduced by Republican legislators. Johnson also used his line-item-veto power thousands of times. He credits his heavy veto pen for eliminating New Mexico's budget deficit and cutting the growth rate of New Mexico's government in half." Johnson has "said his numerous vetoes, only two of which were overridden, stemmed from his philosophy of looking at all things for their cost-benefit ratio and his axe fell on Republicans as well as Democrats."

I was very disappointed that the Libertarian Party picked a Republican retread in 2008 as their nominee. This one looks interesting: www.bostontea.us/

I've checked out Gary. He does not seem to me to have the star power to capture the brain dead. JMO.
Which is why I think Obama will be re-elected-- because people will vote for a person they believe in who cannot win. REALLY sux. Another 4 years of Obama, the designed by globalist bankers POTUS, could literally wipe out our way of life.
Fisc-- what you used to say. Yeah. We're there.

Not too sure?? Many on the left have stated they support the troops but don't support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Or they believe the money wasted in the Middle East could be better spent at home,

In todays world we would not even get involved. The nations that Germany invaded first have to much military capabilities today and germany would have been defeated long before we got in. Russia would nuke them in a heart beat today.

The LEFT may be anti military, but their global elitist POTUS is not, so it seems. Aside from his rules of engagement in the official wars, which I hope are being ignored as they are death traps, he seem to be the Kill, Baby, Kill POTUS of our generation.
Which seems to be over looked by the left as record numbers of troops are killed in the so called "war is over" Iraq. Disgusting.

And lets not forget who declared "mission accomplished" in regard to Iraq, several years ago.
Sweet VA as you probably know most of the lefties or progressives in San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, San Jose, Haywood and Santa Clara are indeed anti-military...but that may be changing now that DADT is being reformed, I think?? Ed could well be somewhat frustrated since we have had some here on the left who were definitely anti-military and posted some obnoxious and troubling comments aimed at the military and veterans...but best to let that one alone..

But for the most part, left wingers, such as myself, are pro vets and pro military. I am a First Gulf War vet and I am proud to have served. I support active duty personnel and vets as do most of our citizens, left or right.

I was thinking of Code Pink, Actup, and GLAAD who are very anti-military and they seem to have some power over the local government officials out here.....veterans groups cannot go up against those groups who are more progressive than left, I guess??

Don't be so sure krickitt....I believe the brain dead are starting to realize where 50+ years of "star power" has gotten us so far. Nobody thought Obama would beat Hillary either. If Johnson is successful in getting his name out there and letting people know who he is, what he stands for, and his past accomplishments as NM Governor, I believe he'll stand a chance.

Or they believe the money wasted in the Middle East could be better spent at home, Possible they have a point, I beleave many from the right too are saying things similar. Actually this middle to the left, which is in your mind is a "lefty " , feels and hopes the Iraqi PM goes against Al sader and the wishes of Iran and asks us to stay on in Iraq, I don't think he will, I think if he does they , one or both will do away with him, but I feel we should stay there in some capacity. 35/45 thousand. Trainers, liaison and some fighting brigades..so how does that match up with your leftest BS ed ? $ spent in the middle east, useful, IMHO, small amount in the big picture, very important to israel right now, having to increase their defense expendatures, plus purchasing the F-35's, serving a purpose and in Egypt too, keep the military on our side, not the time to cut and run, not with elections coming up in three months. We have interests there , middle east, big ones and Iran is making to many rumbling noises to leavethe arera. As we are not in the forefront in Lybia, and it seems something positive, possible, might be happening there in the next few months I support that little effort too. Afghanistan/ Pakistan [most important there], Karzi in Afghanistan, I really don't know what to say. I supported Obama's study, his decision on what he did, a time table to start moving some out next month, won't be a lot, try to get the Pakistan's to help in some type of arrangement in Afghanistan, Taliban, Government ...but there , who knows. Do You? If so, lets hear it, you might have a idea because I don't think our people know them selves, just semi winging it. IMHO.

"we have had some here on the left who were definitely anti-military and posted some obnoxious and troubling comments aimed at the military and veterans"
If so then go after THEM, call THEM out and why , but I suggest leave the paint brush in the garage.
I don't remember that , think it was on the old zone, before my time, remember it was mentioned after the fact, brought up, but I WILL bow to your post that it was a happening, and not just a sleight diss at the military that to be honest some here do over do it as far as being insulted , some times out of proportion to the comments made.
