and don't know or respect the language and customs of that country, they are called by some in the country "they ugly American?" When Americans go to other countries and expect people in that country to speak American, some in this country say they are embarrassed and again go back to the "ugly American stereotype" that other countries should cater to us when we visit. When somebody from another country comes here and people expect them to know and respect the dominant language and customs, some of those same people still say that attitude is typical of Americans and "we should be more open to other cultures." So I am just trying to get this straight....when we go to other countries to visit, we are expected to have a general understanding of cultures, languages, and customs of that country and not expect people in that country to cater to us; but when somebody comes here, we are supposed to have a basic understanding of their the culture, language, and customs and cater to them?
Just curious how anybody can honestly justify that thought process??

When DS was little and he'd go to play at someone's home, I told him to be a good guest; when he'd have a friend over to play at our home, I told him to be a good host.

The ugly American thing came up for about 3 reasons. 1. We used to travel on vacation over seas a lot. 2. We dress terrible & are easy to identify. 3. Mostly they don't like us anyway (except the French, they don't like anybody).
As far as people coming here we are generally talking about illegals that stay here, not people vacationing here. I know of no one that expects someone to convert to our customs for a 2 week visit.
Lastly Americans in general speak 1 language. That's mostly because our country is so big that only 1 language is required. Overseas you can often go from 1 country through another & into a 3rd country in a couple of hours. Most people over there speak several if not more languages.
I can say that in most countries (the one's I've been to) that don't hate us understand that we mostly only speak English & most of those people speak English. I've never really had a problem & the people are generally very nice.
