I used to have an annual ritual of making pumpkin soup in the fall after closing my shore house. I would buy a small pumpkin at the grocery store down there and put it on my deck as a decoration. Upon closing the place up for the winter, I would take the pumpkin home, cut it open, clean it out and roast it in the oven. I would then proceed to scrape out the roasted pumpkin flesh and make a soup following the classic soup procedure. I also would put potatoes in, and possibly some bacon to start. I'd add freshly ground nutmeg and cinnamon, as well as add some whole clove....
