It seems like media loves these doom-and-gloom panicky-scary stories over these general sorts of things, don't they? I'm thinking of SARS and bird flu and mad cow disease and swine flu. Yes, they are real. Yes, they are a concern. Yes, they are dangerous.
But I'm reminded of the line from the movie "The American President" : I think the important thing right now is not to BE panicking.
And stay away from raw veggies in Europe.

I think the government should not stick their nose into e coli in food and let the market straighten it out. ;D

And stay away from raw veggies in Europe. Hurricane season is officially here. They already do an in depth analysis of every semi-organized cloud floating in and around the Gulf. I a couple months, it will turn to the clouds floating off Africa's left coast. Face it....sensationalism sells.

Though nearly 200 new cases of E. coli infection were reported in Germany in the first two days of June, the Robert Koch Institute disease control center said new infections peaked on May 21 and May 22, and have since then been dropping. Though it cautioned that what appears to be a downward trend could change if there are new cases that have not yet been reported, there are other signs that the outbreak could be waning

I think the government should not stick their nose into e coli in food and let the market straighten it out. ;D You say that as if you have no confidence that the private sector would not only solve the problem but do it quicker, better, and for less money. This underlying presupposition of statists that businesses want to kill their customers has always been a curious thing to me. Do farmers WANT a reputation as the source of a deadly outbreak? What if they could make an extra $1 million this year? I still say, nope. Why would they? You can burn through a million bucks pretty fast-- assuming you don't lose it in the inevitable lawsuits-- and now what are you going to do?

I'm not saying that the outbreak will itself necessarily be serious-- I'm a rational person. I fear the government / "international community" response to it.

What concerns me is a report I saw that it can spread person to person, not just by eating it. Is this a flipping terrorist attack, or what??

Or another attack on cows, since manure fertilizes the fields that grow the killer veggies...

Strict handwashing habits and cleaning everything possible (especially, in the kitchen) with a bleach/water mix will do wonders to protect you and your family. Always use antimicrobial wipes on the handles of your grocery cart, etc. Just be careful with cleanliness and you'll most likely come out of this Scot-free.
