I have friends in a wide variety of financial situations. Probably 98% make significantly less than what DH and I clear. I don't talk specific #'s if I think there's a big financial discrepancy because it'd come across as bragging or cause hurt feelings. I'll talk in generalities with my father, who is exceptionally money-savvy, but all he knows for numbers was my starting salary five years ago. Oh, and I mentioned the price of a house we were looking at; he commented (trying to be circumspect) that the guideline was no more than 2.5x annual income; I replied that we were within that range. I think he was surprised.
Beyond the social aspect, DH is a very private person and wouldn't thank me for broadcasting his salary. I was joking about it, without using specific numbers, once in front of one of his (very close and probably similarly-compensated) friends, it didn't go over well.
If I were to be asked about my field specifically, I'd note that jobs in my area tend to pay well if you can get them. I do make a point of warning would-be grad students that the field is being gradually outsourced and jobs can be very difficult to find; anyone further along tends to already know this.
