Recent magazine article that (I think?) explains one purpose of this board-- Financial Biological Determinism by Megan McArdle www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2011/05/financial-biological-determinism/239527/Sorry if this was already posted. This place wasn't mentioned but some of your competitors were. Most of the points seem consistent with opinions expressed here, but there were some surprises. I can attest to the power of work environment on savings behavior. I think it's one of the advantages of being an engineer or scientist, that we know we won't impress our colleagues with what we purchase, but rather by being seen as world-class experts in our field. I imagine it's quite different in client-centric professions.

I thought the article was thought provoking, but a little off in its stereotypical Jones' possessions. I spent a long time on the sidelines of academia (graduate student), and trips to Europe, fine dining, European cars (no matter how "modest"), and historic houses were the more usual markers of financial success as opposed to speedboats and McMansions.
However, I do believe that there is a type of financial determinism. It may be the result of your upbringing or a reaction to it, though, whcih makes the biological part more problematic.
