In January 2008 coffee prices (per pound) and gas prices (per gallon) were about the same: $3 (see chart above, click link to see chart). Coffee prices have more than doubled to $6.60 per pound, making the increases in gas prices to $3.80 in April look relatively minor. What's next? Congressional investigations to determine if coffee speculators are driving up prices? Allegations of "price gouging" at Starbucks? Investigations of "windfall profits" for "Big Coffee"? mjperry.blogspot.com/2011/05/coffee-prices-vs-gasoline-prices.html#links

Actually prices for coffee was so low , way low, for over a year, Publics on the extra large , 33.9 oz, on famouse brands, Maxwell House , Folgers , seems every other week @ 5.99 {think they actually went to $4.99 per for a while}per container..now it's climbing..when that size is on sale, $7.25 last time I purchased..though also look for better brands on sale..possible your thinking normal prices to the lowest which has climbed back to more normal levels.
Still, when really low, was wondering what third world workers were getting paid, had to be hard on them.

I may have to commute to FL to buy coffee then. The last Maxwell House extra large set me back $9.88. Actually the shelf price on that 33.9 oz on Maxwell house , non sale, was $14- and change I noticed, Folgers , same big size, no sale..I think was $11 and change, thus I am thinking the real low prices might be a thing of the past. There setting us up for the new reality..it was a nice ride while it was going on. Not for the farmers , small ones, and workers however I am sure, hopefully they will be getting a bit more now, but doubt it. They had the shrink rapped pkg, air sucked out if you know what I mean, Maxwell house, at $2.99 and I am thinking of going to buy a few today, which will still be on sale today, they change every Thursday, Publicks.

Probably a government plot to force people off the unhealthy brew.

I have been reliably informed that the ready availability of reasonably-priced coffee is ESSENTIAL to our National Security Interests. <---- proof of its importance? We have a coffee drinking smiley.

I remember in the mid 1970's when coffee went sky high buying a brand of coffee that was half toasted wheat. I really liked the stuff and was sorry when it went away.

I buy whole beans on the internet. I really haven't noticed a significant rise in the price. Hard to say what's really going on, but it may not be at the grower level. Just not sure.

Postum was sometimes marketed by an invisible cartoon ghost named Mister Coffee Nerves, who would appear in situations wherein people were shown in uncomfortable life-situations (e.g., irritability, lack of sleep, lack of athletic prowess) due to their use of coffee and its negative effects. These cartoons always ended with the afflicted people switching to Postum and Mister Coffee Nerves running away until the next cartoon.[5]

Shortages, bad weather jolt coffee prices higher By Thomas Grillo Wednesday, May 25, 2011 - Updated 14 hours ago The price of a cup of Joe is rising — again. J.M. Smucker Co., the maker of 12-ounce bags of Dunkin’ Donuts, Millstone, Folgers and Folgers Gourmet Selections, has increased the cost of a bag of coffee sold in supermarkets by an average of 11 percent or about 88 cents a bag. While the price hike doesn’t directly affect coffee sold in Dunkin’ Donuts stores, James Coen, president of the Dunkin’ Donuts Independent Franchise Owners Association, said he expects shop owners will raise the price of their 16-ounce bags by $1. George Howell, president of the George Howell Coffee Co., said coffee prices are being driven up by shortages, demand and bad weather. “Don’t be surprised if other coffee companies follow with their own price increases,” he said. www.bostonherald.com/business/general/view/2011_0525shortages_bad_weather_jolt_coffee_prices_higher/srvc=home&position=also

Add the fact that there was a lower crop to the higher shipping charges PLUS speculators & I could see prices going up. I'm not worried though. If they go to high I'll just hang out at Starbucks & hit people on the head & take their's. (A man's got to do what a man's got to do).

Coffee is grown in Indonesia, as well. Don't know how their crops have fared. I buy Jamaican, which is usually more expensive; however, it hasn't seen the rise in price that's been noted in coffee from South America. I haven't checked the price of Hawaiian coffee, so don't know if it's seeing a dramatic rise (again, usually more expensive).

I thought that the reason the prices driopped so much there was a glut on the market, it being grown so many places today.

I don't drink coffee, myself. I don't care for it. I get it for mother, as she loves it.

"Let them drink ... tea!" When I owned my Coffee Shop from 96-01 this was the rallying cry from all employee's behind the counter when someone asked for decaf. I mean come on don't ask for decaf coffee when the motto of the business plastered in 3 foot high letters on the storefront is "IT DON'T MEAN A THING IF IT AIN'T GOT CAFFEINE"

My wife drinks tea every now & then. I just put it down as a wonderful woman who has strange, perverted quirks in her nature (she also drinks fru fru coffee flavored drinks, also a perverted flaw in her character). (Actually the closest that we have come to a fight in our 21 years of marriage was over coffee. In the evenings she would ask me if I would drink a cup of coffee, & I of course would say yes. Then she would hand me a cup of that flavored stuff without "WARNING" me. I would get it about half way down & then it would stop because it wasn't COFFEE & didn't taste like COFFEE. I asked her not to do that twice (yes she did it to me again). The third time I told her my next wife wouldn't do that to me. She smiled sweetly & said you would divorce me over coffee? Nope, but I will hide your body in the back yard after I kill you. She has never done it again. (To be honest I think she thought it was funny watching me choke on that stuff. I told you that I think she has some perverted flaws).

My husband makes our own house blend. Uses Mayan Black Onyx, Bed and Breakfast or Foglifter, Holiday Peppermint, Chocolate, and French Roast. Pretty good mix, hits all the notes.

Check quick...do we have a coffee czar? Our energy czar thinks gas prices must equal Europes in order the save the planet. Does coffe growing leave a large ecological footprint? Last September coffee was $3.92 per cup in Germany....whats that work out to per gallon? (that was regular coffee too..not expresso or cappucino) As a genuine coffeeholic, I am following this closely
