No, seriously, I do. I have been thinking about it for 2 years now! I want a Ford Escape SUV. I want a new one, not a used one.
I have been driving the same stupid little Ford Focus for 10 years now. At the moment, there isn't even anything wrong with it, I am just sick of it. I work hard, I save money, I have the money in my budget for the payments, and if I time it right, I will be able to get 0% financing. I keep holding off on buying one because I know that it makes more financial sense for me to continue driving my paid-for car. But I keep getting that itch for a vehicle that I like, that will be big enough for the family we will hopefully have. Big enough to put the bikes in for a weekend of trail riding, big enough to hold all our luggage on vacations and trips to Alabama to see the family. And new. Gloriously new. Shiny, fresh-smelling, warranty-having new.
I likely won't be buying it anytime soon, because like I said earlier, my car runs fine. And DH's car will need replaced before mine, it is on its last legs. But oh how I dream of the day when I get my Escape....

If you can afford it, I say go buy it. Sometimes you should just do what makes you happy.

I fantasize about buying an SUV that won't have weird warning lights and creaking all the time. Unfortunately my dream vehicle is waaay more than I'm willing to pay.

The cars we drive now were gifted to us when we were younger, so I've never just signed away $20K of my money like that before. The only big-ticket thing I've ever bought was my house, and we justified that by reminding ourselves that we'd either be paying rent or mortgage, might as well build equity. But we already own the cars outright. You're right though, I probably should let myself get it eventually since I want it so badly.

The Escape isn't a very great vehicle although it's rating have improved quite a bit over the last couple of years. If that's what you want buy it.
And new they run about 26k MSRP.

I get that, but from your posts, it sounds like you're saving a ton of money. What do you eventually plan on doing with the money? Saving and living within your means is all well and good, but if you make good money, I don't really see a problem with enjoying some of it. You want a Ford Escape, not a Range Rover or a BMW SUV. I dont' really see taht as extravagant.

Isn't a Ford Escape a scaled down clone of the Explorer? I'd go with the Explorer.

I've always driven Fords and had good luck with them. The Escape gets great gas mileage (the same mileage my focus currently gets), which is why I'm specifically wanting that vehicle. I'm curious as to why you say it isn't a great vehicle? Are there a lot of known issues with it?

Escapes must be cheaper here. I just saw them advertised here this weekend starting at $19,999. I like them too! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Perhaps not extravagant, but buying a Range Rover or Beemer would be foolish. When I was in the market for a vehicle six years ago, I looked up maint data on the Range Rover and they had lots of issues. Beemers' are not that great either.

I've driven it, and I liked it, but I also think paying $70k for a vehicle is insane.

Explorer's get around 17-19 mpg. And, yeah, the Explorer does handle a bit like a truck, but not that bad. My 2002 gives a smooth and comfortable ride. Never rode in an Escape. She said she wanted something to handle a large family. Not sure an Escape would handle it.

I'm thinking I would spend closer to $25K with all the options I want, but I'd put $5K down, because I don't want the payments to be too high.

Nope, not brandy new ones. Just a few years old. What are parts like for BMWs? Some of these foreign models charge outragious amounts for parts. I had an Isuzu Trooper a while back. Had to replace the tail light that broke, $400 for the part, and that was from a junk yard.

Yes, there were quite a few. Check on consumer reports that's what I remember from them but the latest showed improvement.

What about the rest of the "stuff" you'll need when you are traveling with the rug rats? Crib? Playpen? Stroller... supplies, etc.

You're right, I can't take the money with me. Reading all these posts about people who are deep in debt and can't afford their lifestyles has scared me. It seems to be a slippery slope. It starts with the SUV, then comes the job loss, etc, etc. Freaks me out.

I have no idea what Beemer parts run, sis lives in FL, so we dont' really chat about that. I have a VW, the parts haven't been any more expensive than parts for DH's domestic truck.

Ford's website says $21 and some change, so $19,999 would be an expected price for the low end model. If you have a trade-in worth a few thousand, and you save up a few thousand for a down-payment, then you would only have to sign away $12 - $15k, not $20k. If you have some in savings, and you wait another year, earmarking $250/month, then you could have another $3k down, and maybe you could get away with a $10k car loan. You could pay that off at $250/month in less than 4 years and still have at least 6 good years on the car.

That's not likely when you're done with tax title etcetera you'll be in the 25k range easily.

If you want it go for it. When I read the thread title, I'm thinking one of those huge SUVs. Escapes are pretty reasonable. I've heard of some ongoing issues with them, but I would think Ford has been doing a good job lately with improving the vehicles. I have an Explorer Sport 2001 and love it. It is a little bigger and is the truck version.
Since this is the YM board, I think it is a much better deal to get a 1-2 year old vehicle, but have been hearing so much lately about used car prices being high and that new is better.

I never understood the logic that babies need a gigantic vehicle. I was able to take my 2 babies and every they needed in my Accord. I find the small SUV's to be comparable in space. The Accord still works fine for us, and now the kids are mid-sized. They don't get as much back-seat / foot room space as they want, but we can fit everything we need somewhere in the vehicle. The would rather have more space around them when we do road trips, so they can bring every toy they have ever encountered - but they lived.

Baby equipment seems much larger than it was 30 years ago. The wayback in an Escape is not big
