I need to get my son some type of Medic Alert something or other. I was surprised at how much they cost. Recently, I got him a bracelet, but it wasn't entirely metal and broke pretty quickly...he's a teenager...so I made the mistake of leaning too much toward fashion instead of function. Now I've ordered a necklace to see how long that lasts.
Some of the medic alert devices had USBs that you are supposed to put medical information on, wasn't sure how practical that was. Others have registry numbers and you can get information using that, which sounds even less practical.
I guess the prices aren't so bad for adults who will have them a couple of years--but for a teenager when it's "lemme see how long this lasts before it breaks/gets lost/gets thrown away", I'm not sure what's reasonable.
Any hints and/or suggestions welcomed. (Um, yea, I've seen where people say they've gotten tattoos...nooooo.)

I would think that something that looks like dog tags would be cool enough. Does he have an opinion on what he think he'd wear?

For a teenage boy, I'd go with dog tags or the simple metal style ~ but that's just me.

ooh, ooh! I can absolutely help out here!! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I get my bracelets from Lauren's Hope, and have for years. they have a very wide variety of options, including dog tags, waterproof, sporty style, temporary tattoos, etc. I've got a braided leather rope bracelet that I wear while playing sports, a Swarovski crystal-and-pearl bracelet for formal, and a few other options in between. check out the website with your son, I'm sure you will find something to suit your needs. ETA: here's my black leather bracelet, it's pretty much indestructible. good luck!

cheesecakelady, I'm not sure what you mean. I've got 3 or 4 tags that are interchangeable with all my bracelets. I've gotten in the habit of changing things out. it's really not as bad as you might think.....

Thanks everyone for responding. I have dog tags on the way, and the site Chiver recommended is excellent and has some great replacement bands for his bracelet. (Karma for that!)
I didn't think the usb option was hokey, but I'm trying to get him in the habit of wearing something for summer camp, not sure if that's waterproof...and the last time the paramedics had to be called they had a paper and pen. I would love the USB option, especially since they kept asking me the same questions over and over, I don't know if they really needed to ask that many times or if they were just trying to help me stay calm.
Snerdley, the $50 I paid for the broken bracelet that didn't last an afternoon was too much to decorate the top of my dresser with. The tags I got were about $25, and the bracelet was $50 (mostly because of the engraving) but it can go as high as several hundred dollars. At least the actual part with the engraving looks really nice so at least I have the option of a replacement band.

Karma for Mr. Sroo! My son has gone to the hospital twice, and the paramedics have always been very nice to us, and would even come back before he was discharged to check on him. ![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/smileys/heart.gif)

bumping this thread to point out that Lauren's Hope is having a holiday clearance sale right now. I got an email this morning to say that some items will be 40% off. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
