Here are some gems from the article, which you can find here: www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-money-makeover-furry-20110220,0,2396237.story Lisa and Stephen Furry have hit financial rock bottom, even though they're not acting like it.
The couple filed for bankruptcy a little more than a year ago, wiping out $50,000 in credit card debt, yet their household spending outstrips their income. They shop at Whole Foods, spend freely on beauty products and splurged on a wedding anniversary getaway to Santa Barbara — at a four-star hotel.
They haven't paid the mortgage on their North Hollywood home since September, and a default notice could come at any time. Stephen, 32, earned $62,000 last year working as a grip and lighting technician on film and TV crews, but the work is sporadic. It came to a near-halt during the 2007-08 writers' strike, not long after the Furrys bought the house with a high-risk mortgage.
Lisa does not earn a salary — she home-schools their daughter.
In addition to the mortgage, the couple took on the medical costs of in-vitro fertilization therapy in an attempt to have another child. And Lisa spent about $275 a month on beauty products and services.
The couple's pets, which include a rabbit, cost about $200 a month.

I wonder how that will turn out. They can't file bankruptcy again for several years.

I'm surprised that the pet stuff was $200. I'd have expected it to be higher. My BIL's family has 2 mastiffs and they go though a lot of kibble in a month, maybe 100 lbs? So maybe 1 mastiff would be about 1/2 of that?

I'm thinking that they spend $10 a month on the rabbit and everything else on the dog. 135 lbs!

I had a bullmastiff, shorter and more muscular than a mastiff, and she ate less than my standard poodle. 40lbs bags of food lasted about 3 weeks.
By the time the couple in the OP can file BK again, they will have lost everything. If they haven't tried to change, and are splurging instead of paying for their home, I guess they're ok with that.

We have a rabbit and two little dogs. We go through a large $40 bag of food a month. The rabbit goes through about $15 worth of food, plus carrots, celery and fresh foods. I could see $200 being reasonable for a large dog or a dog requiring grooming.

I didn't think about grooming. We just gave the bullmastiff a bath ourselves. The poodle's grooming is a minimum of $80 for a bath and simple cut, depending on where I take him. If his fur is really long or matted, it can cost almost $200. I spent $400 on the tools and learned to do it myself.

I bathe my dogs now. I do pay to have their nails trimmed. Previously I had a Saint Bernard, and i did pay to have him bathed every two weeks or so. His size made it a challenge to do in the tub. He was also very dirty and the cleanup after a bath required was just not worth doing it myself.

I bathe/groom my parent's Aussie when I pet-sit her. This thread makes me think they're getting a really good deal (free pet sitting/grooming)

You're kidding, right? The people who file BK get offers practically right away. The ones who try to pay back what they owe get the shaft.

No CC's, I believe what allows them to spend so much is that they have basically removed their largest expense from their budget. They haven't paid the mortgage since last fall.

I have to say, I agree with Horatio - anyone lending money to this couple, whether it a friend, relative or bank, deserves to lose it. How on earth do they have enough credit to finance these trips and expenditures? Surely they're not paying cash...

From what I understand, after you file for bankruptcy your credit is in the toilet. I am thinking the best interest they would be getting are those 29% interest rates ones.

Yeah, DH filed about 4 years ago and he has yet to get an offer for a card that isn't one of those secured ones that charges you interest to spend your own money... his credit is back up to 650 or so, but it's taken a while.

After bankruptcy, these people are a great credit risk for the next seven years. They can't file for bankruptcy again for several years. You or I can could file tomorrow. In the mean time, these people's creditors will have an opportunity to collect late fees, over limit fees, the high interest rates charged people with poor credit histories, etc. Sure, creditors will charge off un-collectible balances when these folks declare bankruptcy again. But the creditors will collect a lot of money from these folks in the mean time.

I think my MIL said they go though a 50lb bag of dog food every 2 weeks. I think Belle is 135 lbs and Misty is 125 lbs. I call them pony dogs. Yeah, I don't get how they got the house either. And apparently it's not going to sink in anytime soon for them either.
