So I accidentally melted part of my vacuum today. Thankfully it was an easily replaceable part. I have an Eureka Altima. Not exactly top of the line. I think we got it a few years ago for $70. To replace the part that melted and the filters it's going to be almost $60 ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/yikes.png) . Other than the melted bit and the filters there is nothing wrong with it. I'm going to fix it because it's still working great. But in general should you put more into a vacuum than you paid for it?

I guess it depends on how much you like it vs how much a replacement would cost. I love my Dyson, but it was a gift. I would never pay that much for a vacuum.

Boskone, my mom does that. When her vacuum breaks or stops working as well she just gets a new one. I think if the part wasn't so easy to replace( the rollerbrush) I probably would have too. I did find another place that sells that part for cheaper( was still shopping around when I posted) and I can free shipping and 3.5% cash back through Ebates.
Now for my next vacuum I want a central vac.

I won't ever again. I've repaired 2 vacuum cleaners and both times, the repair failed within 3 months. Never again.

I bought refurbished Dyson on black friday from Overstock.com. I always kept buying POS vacuums. When I got the Dyson, I vacuumed whole house with my old vacuum and then did it with Dyson ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Amazing how much stuff it picked up.

No way would I pay $60 to repair a $70 vacuum. UNLESS, I had a zillion bags. (If it's one of those that don't need bags, then "nevermind".)
I might spend $20.
If I just had to buy a new rubber belt for $5, then absolutely I would.

The part itself was $20. I also replaced the HEPA filter and the foam filter. The HEPA they say to replace every year( first time I've replaced it since I owned it) and the foam one they say to replace every six months. And yes it doesn't have bags.

If you get a new one, make sure the parts underneath are metal. The ones that continually broke on us had plastic parts on the bottom that inevitably broke. We would up choosing a CarpetPro. Cheaper than a Dyson, and all metal.

Not sure if it is still true (or actually ever was) but I heard that pretty much any vacuum will pick up stuff after the first vacuum. If you had vacuumed with the dyson first then went back with your old vacuum, chances are you would have picked up a lot of stuff. I think I heard this when someone was talking about those vacuum sales people that come to your house for a demonstration, it is one of there tricks.

I think I heard this when someone was talking about those vacuum sales people that come to your house for a demonstration, it is one of there tricks. Well I will give you an example then. Long time ago, I used to use those carpet powders. I stopped using them loooooonnngg time ago. I would put some on the carpet and then vacuum. My Dirt Devil would pick "all" of it up in couple passes. After that I did not see any white powder in the container. Fast forward few years and now I have Dyson. First time ever I vacuumed my place with it, the entire container was filled with white super fine powder. Not dust, not dust balls or carpet strings...I am talking all white. At first, I thought it was smoke from the vacuum and kind of got freaked out because after 1 move, the container became all foggy looking (from the powder) I still pick it up everytime I vacuum. It's less and less as time goes by, but it still picking it up. My old vacuum, when I would clean it, you couldn't see any white powder in the container or in the air ducks. Dyson's ducks are all filled with white powder. You can really see it when I clean the whole "patented" part of it with all the tunnels and little holes. The vacuum you are talking about where people come over is probably Kirby, which is like 4 grand. ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

I love my Hoover Windtunnel 7500. This thing is cumbersome and heavy but it's sooo powerful and been going strong for the 7 yrs. I've had it. I think I paid $250 or $300 for it. The Monster! When I have to pick it up, (up the stairs, etc.) I just consider the act to be.......weight bearing exercises! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) I've bought many of the $70 vacuums....that only last a couple years... ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/angry.png)

Went from a canister vac to an upright vac. Found out that I couldn't vacuum under beds with an upright vac. bummer.

I got a $600 Dyson for 90% off. It's amazing. I will pay to repair it if it breaks.

I wouldn't spend $60 to repair a vac that cost $70 when new. Just buy yourself a new vacuum cleaner and hope that nothing melts on it. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Also, I wouldn't spend more than a $100 on a new one, unless you've always wanted a Dyson and have the money. (I sure don't.)

Just so you can roll your eyes at me, When I read the thread title, I forgot this was a money board. So, my husband gets really upset with me because I don't change the bag when it's full. I'm pretty sure I can fit more in it. I'm pretty sure the dust will settle and compact and I can get at least three more vacuumings in there. Then, when the bag is as solid as a brick, I change it. I don't want to buy anymore bags than I have to.
I can put a lot into a vacuum. ;D

I have a lot of cats and a dog that shed like crazy. I used to have a hoover windtunnel and while it worked great at first, it definitely lost its suction power over the years.
I now have a new (not refurb) Dyson DC28 animal that I bought on a super sale for $330 shipped with tax. It retails for $650 and can usually be had for around $500.
This thing was worth every penny. The suction on it is incredible and it doesn't get weaker if the canister starts getting full.
My friend has the Dyson ball (DC25) and it works great as well. It however wouldn't work well for me as the canister is much smaller than on the DC28 and it has a slightly weaker motor. With all the fur in my house I already have to empty the canister every couple of rooms so the bigger the better.
