Things are really tight right now... I just need to vent my frustration and fear a little bit.
Between $1,000 in moving deposits, $1,100 in educational costs (I'm going for a certification and needed to sign up before June since the test is in December and takes 6 months of preparation), $1,200 in pro-rated rent for the old place, $850 deposit for the new place, and $1,200 in rent for the new place next month, we're seriously in the shit this month.
Luckily my and DF's bills are paid, so that's one less thing to worry about. We have two more paychecks coming in this month which will amount to about $2,300. Plus I just transferred $500 in savings. And we have about $850 in the account right now - so basically we have around $3,600 in total. By my count, that will break down as follows:
$2,150 to pay our deposit and June rent for the new place $1,450 to pay off the rest of the credit card balance
Actually, since I'll need to leave a little cushion to, you know, live on for the next couple of weeks I probably won't completely clear the credit card but I'll come pretty close.
PLUS I just got my first ticket ever, and I'm not sure how much it will be for (I took a red light). AND this morning I managed to scratch the side of my car when I was pulling into a spot in a big hurry. (Normally I'm a careful driver - like I said, I've never gotten a ticket before in my life and the only other time I scratched my car was during a minor accident in the snow). So I'm sure I'll incur costs for both of those, plus DF needs new air filters in his car, PLUS we have to pay the balance for the cat next month (another $1k), plus we have two MORE wedding deposits.
Oh, and our EF is down to $2k.
Help... haha... I'm sure I'll catch us up eventually but it's really stressful right now. I'm used to banking $1600 per month - at this rate, the next time I'll be able to do that will be August.

Deep breaths. Live is full of tight months from time to time.
As for the scratch on the car? That can wait until you have money to fix it. (If you even decide to, depending on the age/condition of the car.) Air filters are cheap and easy to change and/or can easily wait a month or two until there's a bit more money.
Will you be getting a deposit back from your old place once the move is completed?
ETA: Wow - $1k pet deposit seems like a lot!

Firebird, I'm sorry..... Do take a deep breath. Between moving and getting married, you are dealing with more stress than usual.... Even good event s can be stressful.
This will pass.

When I have a month like that I have to remind myself that that is what the money is for in the first place. It sounds like your EF is serving its intended purpose. Hopefully you will get your old deposit back soon to refill it. Moving can be soo expensive, my last move I ended up cashing in some bonds that I hadn't wanted to touch because it cost more to fix up my old house to move out than I expected.

Hang in there, Firebird! Things will be fine once you get through this temporary transition. Just keep your eyes on the prize, and you're going to make it.

ETA: Wow - $1k pet deposit seems like a lot! The deposit was $300. The balance is $1,000. We're getting a rather rare, expensive breed. I know it's a lot Also be happy and grateful that you guys have the funds to cover all the expenses. Imagine if you didn't?ZOMG yes. I keep reminding myself of this. The money IS there. Our deposit on the old place is negligible - about $300 - but I'm hopeful we'll get it back. Thanks for the support, everyone. Writing it all out, I realize it's not as bad as I thought it was.

I thought it was the pet deposit for the apartment. I'm going to assume you're purchasing a cat instead of adopting it because you need one of the hypoallergenic ones or something. Don't tell me otherwise if different.

Good luck on the ticket. I live in NYC, and I ran a red light back in 2009.... $270 later..... Also, if I had gotten a second one in eighteen months it would have been $500+, and a third would have been over $1K. You can bet that I slow for all yellows now.

Don't tell me otherwise if different. No, our pet deposit for the apartment is an extra $500, which thankfully we don't have to come up with until we actually have the cat. I forgot that part... As for the breed, yes and no. I am allergic to most cats, but we got a hairless one mostly because we like the breed and I didn't want to clean up cat fur all the time. We had no interest in adopting (or at least, I had no interest in adopting - and DF was the one that wanted the cat, haha). Sorry ;D I've taken a beating on this board before for admitting to the above. I had no idea so many people felt so strongly about adopting animals. In our situation, though, it's this cat or nothing so arguments for adoption are pretty much wasted on me.

If you're planning on keeping the car pretty much until it dies, there's really no reason to fix the scratch. The car will be all but worthless when you get rid of it, whether you fix it or not, and it'll still get you from A to B just fine.

I'm going to court this weekend to try and get it reduced. I have a perfect driving record so I have a pretty decent shot. I will endure traffic school, if I must, in order to keep this from driving up my insurance rate.
I deserved the ticket, no question. I'm just really pissed at myself. We didn't need this right now, and I usually drive so carefully (which makes me think the stress is getting to me).

Really?? I mean, I'm not going to jump on you for going to a breeder, but I thought the adopt a pet movement was pretty huge and vocal.

It's already scratched in two other places - one is on the rim from that snow accident I mentioned, and the other is on the back bumper from lifting a friend's bicycle into the hatch. I never fixed either of those, so I suppose I can live without getting this one fixed too. I do plan to drive it into the ground. But now my beloved car has a big ugly scratch on her face

If it makes you feel any better I'm right there with you. Moving in about a month but the place I live in now I live with 2 sets of roommates. One of the roommates is moving out but the place the other roommates (a couple) and I are moving into won't be ready until middle of next month. Since we gave our notice 5/1 the roommate who is moving on his own isn't obligated to pay beyond the end of this month. The good news is the other roommates and I can stay at the current place until our new place is ready but we have to pick up the slack on the rent which will be pro-rated based on how long we are there.
So that means more rent at the current place because we don't have a third party paying, rent at the new place based on what each of us will pay will be slightly higher than current place so even though it's pro-rated it will be done so at a higher cost and we have to pay a deposit on the new place. Since we haven't lived at our current place for over a year we're not really counting on getting much of our deposit back. Add in the joy of moving along with the expenses that come with it and the next month or so will be brutal especially as like you I have to start studying for level II of the certification exam I'm taking.

Do they do a "prayer for judgement" so if you're good for the next 3 years it goes away, and all you pay are court costs?

Maybe I'm just oblivious because I don't really care about animals. I'd be just as happy never owning another pet (don't get me wrong, I'm excited about the kitten and I'll take great care of it - but owning a pet wasn't something I was dying to do and it took DF almost a year to convince me to give it a try).
Just not my thing I suppose.

Oh, I hope so! That would rock. I'm definitely scared straight now. Mind you, the yellow lights in this town last about three seconds - I've literally had lights go from green to yellow to red as I'm driving through the intersection. This wasn't one of those times but this is a really shitty town for driving.

The good part - or at least the hopeful/encouraging part - is that now DF and I are paying $300 less than rent. I also arranged to get my car payment reduced from $350 to $200 until the wedding. So that's an extra $450 per month in our pocket, and once all this crap is behind us it should be fairly easy to get back on track. Especially if we can manage to stop spending like drunken sailors in certain... other areas...

I think i may have barfed on the policeman's shoes when he was explaining to me i could go and GET a prayer for judgement. I think he then believed me that I was sick

ME TOO! I convinced myself I could do this but the next four months are going to be seriously brutal. Between studying for the certification exam, planning the wedding, working out like a fiend, and doing my actual job on occasion, I'll be pretty swamped.
No time to spend money, I suppose...

My husband is going to get a ticket for running a red light pretty soon. He treats the yellow as a "speed up" light and gets caught with it turning red lots of times. Pisses me off.

DO NOT MALIGN MY PRECIOUS HERBIE TO ME.
No, the scratch doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. I'm certainly not going to worry about it this month. My dad is going to be mad when he sees it, though. He hates cosmetic imperfections on cars.
