My kid tried telling me since he was 18 he could do anything he wanted. I told him sure you can, but not at my house.

He wants his independence but not my advice, what he fails to realize is if he followed my advice, he'd have his damn independence! I want him to have that too! Probably more than he does!

I'm deeming this week self suffiency week. The kids have done their own laundry but not regularly but at least through the rest of the summer I'm putting that on them and requiring more everyday tasks vs me doling out tasks each day. Chore chart is in progress. Probably won't last long, but anything would help.

Holy growth spurt. C complained this morning that his shoes were too tight. Tough cookies, kid,you have to wear them to golf camp because I don’t have time to get new ones before 9am. I did have time this afternoon, so took him to try shoes on, and he went from a size 7 (too small ones at home) to 8.5 as the 8s didn’t really have any room to grow. Kid, you’re barely 10. I don’t like having to buy shoes in the men’s section. When he outgrows these, his feet will be bigger than mine - I’m generally a women’s 10/men’s 9ish, so I don’t have small feet. 🙃
Not sure I posted here or not, but at his well kid visit last month a couple of days before his birthday, he was 4’-11.5” tall. The pediatrician (not) helpfully told me he’d definitely be over 6’ tall, and that he hadn’t started puberty yet. So I could expect the amount of food he eats and his growth rate to increase when puberty hits. Gee, thanks. 😂🤣

Carrot was 5'8" at his appt last week at age 12, but he started puberty at least a year ago. Size 11 shoes. I absolutely HATE shopping for shoes in the men's section. I just checked and he grew almost 5 inches in one year from age 11 to 12. No wonder he's always complaining about aches and pains.

He was always a steady 4 inches a year to about 11 and then had a big growth spurt. I haven't noticed big appetite changes, but maybe that happened during covid times where there were no normals. C's endo doesn't think he'll get taller than 5'10", maybe 6ft. He's almost 5'8" at 13 and towers over his friends but I hit puberty early and my kids did too so he could top out in the next year. Ds is still gunning for 6'2" which I remind him of every time he wants to stay up late.

Ack. Just got Carrot's schedule for school next year and they put him in Algebra 1 in 7th grade with a note that it would be included on his high school transcript. He has a head for math, but the kid still can't write worth a damn so legibly writing out equations and showing work is going to take a miracle.

Ds had his physical today with a new doctor. She is sending us for x-rays because she says he's in stage 4 for puberty and she's worried he won't hit his full height potential. So if the x-rays show his growth plates are still open we'll look at growth hormones or slowing down puberty. Kinda crazy, but seems worth a shot.

We haven't heard from the Dr yet but the xray results show his bone growth at 15 which is probably too late for any height interventions. I hope he can hit 5'10" though if possible.

Little guy is eating a lot. He likes the stuff I have and he eats during the day too. I don't care, that's what kids do.
He looks forward to meals, I tried him on tamales last night but he didn't like them. So then I fixed him so deep fried shrimp and fries. Hubs had tamales as did DD. That worked out fine for everyone.
I think if he were here for awhile he would fill out.

raeoflyte I admit I don't understand what's happening to your son. Is the doctor saying that because he started puberty early he won't grow any taller? 5'10" is average height so it shouldn't be any sort of burden for him. I'm sorry that this is one more thing for you to worry about.

I'm sorry that this is one more thing for you to worry about. It is weird to worry about height on a kid who towers over his peers. But that's the gist of it. That his growth plates will close before he's able to hit his predicted height. Ideally he'd have 2 more years of growing to stretch into that # but he may be down to months which would cut him off a lot shorter. It's really interesting and I think is what my growth chart looked like. I was 5'6" by 6th grade. I'm not short but I was always predicted to be 5'10". Growth is something his endo office watches, but he was a steady 4 inches a year since diagnosis, and then a growth spurt the last 2 years. Either way, he'll be ok. But it would be nice if they can give him a push.

I am loving our new pediatricians office. I asked them to put a note in the file not to discuss weight with dd present. They called me to get more info and were great. Totally on board with the messaging I want her getting. She hasn't been in yet, but I'm feeling very optimistic that it will be a good fit for both kids.

The doctor called about C's xray and said that his bone age is too old for medical intervention to try to get to that 5'10". He'll top out at 5'8", maybe 5'8.5". I think he's going to be really bummed knowing that there were options out there that we missed.

Ds seemed fine when I talked to him - I still think he's disappointed but hes also very practical. I told him to start going to bed earlier to eek out every last millimeter.

What school supplies do we need for hs? Thinking DD13 (turns 14 tomorrow) will go and hear if specific teachers want certain things and just buy paper, binders, and pens until then.
Anything unusual your teens have found useful? Anything help for organization?

Anything unusual your teens have found useful? Anything help for organization? My insanely unorganized Carrot did much better with an accordian style folder that they thankfully required for 6th grade or I would have never thought of it myself. We're sticking with that for 7th. The great thing about high school is all those crazy long school supply lists are history. Notebooks, folders, pens, pencils and graphing calculator cover pretty much every class. Our school does require headphones or earbuds too because they do so much on their chromebooks.

She didn't inherit my math genes so will just be in regular algebra. I figured a fun calculator may be on the list this yr or next but will wait to see what model. I'm thinking DD9 and I can nerd out over it.
She's in honors English, journalism, and Spanish to fit her interests and talents. I'm hoping to revamp my Spanish alongside her - was my second major in college so hoping she connects with it too.
Good note on graph paper - will add that to our list.

Thank you. I got a text yesterday asking about time of birth bc one of her friends has a family tradition of saying happy bday right on time. My answer was sometime early afternoon LOL.
Text this morning of her the beach condo decorated by her friends. We sent money for the mom chaperone to buy a cheesecake.
She's stressed about the new school with no friends so expecting the next couple weeks to be rocky. Otherwise, I'm enjoying this phase of parenting.

I would wait on the calculator. I know our district has moved to using the desmos online for stuff as that is what is also integrated into the state testing programs.

azucena - Happy birthday to your DDs. That’s cool that you were asked about the time of birth. What a cool way for them to incorporate her into their tradition even though she’s not their kid. DD1 starts middle school this fall too. I looked at her school supply list and it’s very sparse on what to get too. Right now, she doesn’t have her schedule so 🤷♀️. There’s a 6th grade orientation next month (Thursday before school starts) that hopefully will answer more questions.

By all means, see if the calculator is even needed or some other tool is used. I knew my kiddo would need it the very first week and they are now easily found (get sold out pretty quickly around here, although, there's always Amazon) and are actually on sale ($100 is better then $150)

For middle school, a simple planner is key as they started changing classes and need to keep track more themselves. FWIW, at first, DD14 found it hard to get assignments into the planner in the last mins before the bell. I told her to get them on her note paper and move them over at the beg of next class. This was a good tip until she got faster.
