Now I am on a mission to find Bunnicula in print. Facebook got to me with a website that sells book themed T shirts (I am aware I have a problem) outofprint.com/And what should they have but a Bunnicula T-shirt. I LOVED Bunnicula! Now I want to make Gwen read it. We're also at that stage in quarantine where I actually considered getting Gwen a bunny. . upon the condition that we name it Bunnicula. For about five seconds before reality kicked in. His dad still claims he's going to get Gwen one. I warned DH that if that happens be prepared to be a bunny owner. His dad has a bad habit of letting animals go when he gets bored and who knows what happens to them after that. Now that I know he does this I told DH I'm not going to be able to let it live down there. I got enough bad animal juju going against me. www.thriftbooks.com/browse/?b.search=Bunnicula#b.s=mostPopular-desc&b.p=1&b.pp=30&b.oos&b.tileyou're welcome... or I'm sorry depending on how much you end up spending It's the original cover too! They also have Indian in the Cupboard. And R.L. Stine Fear Street. And Christopher Pike. ETA: Okay so I ended up with three books for Gwen, three for Abby and two for myself. They had a copy of my all time favorite Nancy Drew book that I must have read hundreds of times while in elementary school. I also bought Jane: The woman who loved Tarzan. I've checked that book out from the library multiple times, after awhile it's just easier to own it.

I haven't bought anything yet, but I love going through and seeing what new things they have added! They had a Redwall T-shirt! That's something I should try to start reading to either Gwen or Abby. I have my copy of the first novel sitting on my bookshelf. Oh and a Corduroy T shirt! I LOVE Corduroy! I read it to Abby and she wasn't interested.

Seriously.
Diabetes camp made us specifically ask for a refund but at least gave us options.

We're stuck eating recital costs and costume costs for dance. I think she could have at least forgiven the last couple months of fees if you weren't attending but nope. Which reminds me I think I need to pay for May, a whole month I didn't even use.

Half Price Books has a box set of Bunnicula for $40. I didn't look hard though.

I got my money for camp back...all of it actually which I wasn't expecting. The terms and conditions stated $50 was non-refundable if you cancelled. I feel kind of bad because they sounded very busy and I'm thinking they might go under having everyone get their money back after buying all the materials. They tried to get me to just pre-pay for next year at the same price, but I held my ground and said no. I just paid $200 to secure older son's dorm room yesterday, so it worked out well to cover that.
BTW on that dorm room. I was poking around the university site trying to find how to change the meal plan and kept seeing this thing about housing guarantee money needing to be paid. I asked DS if they'd sent him anything about that and he's like "Nope, been watching my Live account like a hawk". I had him search it for "housing guarantee" and they'd emailed him FOUR TIMES in the past month telling him that was due. Three more weeks and he would have lost his spot, and he only had that long because they'd extended it for covid. 50/50 odds he makes it, that's all I can give him!

We get the costumes I just keep forgetting to pick them up. It's not high on my priority list. Supposedly a recital will happen in July but who knows. I have no idea what things will be like come July. It won't be the massive event it was last year for sure I would have to see what they figure out to keep the crowds small enough to follow the rules.

I need to fill out the paperwork to keep C's spot in the before school care program. I think it's due next Tuesday. there's usually a non refundable fee of like $30 but I haven't read thru the paperwork yet.

I'd never heard of Bunnicula but I just asked my 7 year old DD and she said she'd like to read one of the books. She's still struggling with reading so any time she shows an interest in a book series I'm all over it! The "Ranger in Time" series has been a godsend

I loved Indian in the Cupboard at that age. Island of the Blue Dolphins is one I keep trying to force Gwen to read but she's not having it. She also did not read Sideways Stories of Wayside School. I think I am going to read them to Abby and see if she likes them. At any rate *I* like them so they will get read. I liked to ready Scary Stores to Tell in the Dark but that depends on your kid's tolerance for scary stuff. Even at 36 I freaked my sh!t when the movie preview revealed they were including the spider story. A lot of what I read at her age is no longer in print. Abby's age either for that matter. I haven't kept up with the books for those ages groups.

Only on YM was I not only supposed to prepare my financial life to be able to predict and survive a global pandemic but I was also supposed to arrange my education in such a way that I can take on all the subjects my children need to learn AND be able to get them to the state appropriate bench marks for the year. Otherwise clearly I had no business getting married or having kids. Is everyone on here Bill Gates or something?

The school thread. To be honest I could probably do the majority of the subjects required for a 1st and 5th grader. The bigger issue is I have no idea what the benchmarks are. I know they are higher than what they were when DH or I was a kid. Phil can go on and on about how poor education is compared to yesterday but he's so far removed from school work anymore it's laughable. I'm not as far removed and I notice a significant difference in what they are learning vs what I learned in their respective grades. My kids are way smarter than me and better suited for the world ahead especially in terms of technology. They may not be able to plow the fields and make their own soap but last time I looked that didn't seem to be high on the list of in demand job skills. Math is something I refuse to touch. I struggle enough on my own and it gets even more frustrating if I try to teach other people because my brain just does not operate the same. It explains why my dad would get so frustrated with me and vice versa. If we had to teach that grandpa and DH would take over.

Which reminds me I think I need to pay for May, a whole month I didn't even use. My great niece's dance studio is using Zoom for rehearsals. I am sure they won't have a recital, but they are keeping the kids active. I don't know if it was her Mom/Dad that set up the zoom access or if someone else from the studio did it. The Team is very well ranked. DN danced with them when she was in HS, and then put her daughter in their studio when she started dance. My DN an DN are teachers. DN still has licensing for admin, but he is currently doing more like job development for HS internship programs. DN no longer teaches she sells print advertising and her side gig is running an exercise studio. DN is very involved in the local boys wrestling team, and he teaches a co-ed strength training class for boys and girls once a week. They went to virtual classes as soon as the shutdown began. When my DD was in dance the costumes were ridiculously expensive. And they changed them for each performance.

Charles Wallace was honestly in my top 3 for son, but my grandfather's name was Charles and my mother HATED the idea of naming him that because even if it was for a book character, everyone would think it was for her father and she was not really a fan.

My problem is that while I can 'do' the work for 2nd and 6th grade I can't teach the work. I hope that this crisis has illustrated just how valuable teachers are to society. I believe that Georgia teachers are woefully underpaid and at the beginning of the year the Governor (whom I usually loathe) had proposed an across the board raise. Of course, with the collapsing tax revenue that idea won't happen.

I was trying to discuss something about science with Gwen once and DH said my issue is I can't get down to her level. I am used to working with adults and graduate students who already have a background in what I am talking about so I skip over a lot of stuff that someone outside of my background may not know. Then I have to backpeddle making the discussion even more confusing.
I can teach the work if I have to but I am not capable of making sure I'm teaching in a way that Gwen and Abby can relate to. Teachers are more well versed in multiple techniques just like the "new math" that people like to bitch about. For me, especially with certain subjects, I can only process it one way and that way does not work for the rest of society.

I've been refusing to touch K's coding homework. My brain doesn't get the brackets and indents and if/while statements. I have no idea how I got an A in my 1 coding class because my homework coding didn't actually work about 50% of the time. I showed up, I read the book, I participated in class, I did the homework, I asked for help. I did everything I could and my code still wouldn't run. I'm guessing that I got healthy bonus points for the other stuff. Plus my teachers tend to like me. My class using virtual machines was similar. Granted, this was 15+ years ago. But I'm staying away from the coding work. K admitted last night that DH isn't always looking at what she's already done before getting stuck so there's a lot of "you need to do this. Oh, you did. Great." and then "Oh, you need that. Oh, you tried that too?" I'm just staying out of it.
Today is her last day. She's got 1 more coding assignment to do and 2 Zoom meetings and I think she's got everything else submitted. We missed a deadline of noon yesterday for German but submitted it late anyway. I'm not sure how much the teachers are really checking submission times so we're going with better late than never. I know she's done with Art, English, and Science.

Of course, with the collapsing tax revenue that idea won't happen. I struggle with the amount of repetition needed for DS to absorb something. I also struggle with having to sit through the sixteen different ways of explaining how to do something, but that’s a personal failing. Teachers really are specialists...I can do this, but it’s hard and takes a lot of sustained effort. Right now I am deeply annoyed with an online so called phonics exercise. Supposed to teach ay and ai long a...but they mark it wrong if you pop other long A sounds, like Kate, and they have “said” as an ai correct answer Good news, DS is well beyond needing this explained and unlikely to suffer ill effect. Bad news, he is now obsessed with popping the game’s balloons and I don’t see this ending soon.

I can't teach Carrot because he already has a teenager brain. Everything I say is WRONG and he will argue with me to the end of the earth about the most benign things. Drives me crazy when he comes up to me asking a question because he presumably doesn't know the answer. I tell him and he says I'm wrong. I mean, I know I should be looking at this from the point of view that he's questioning everything and that's good. But I'm at the point where I'm thinking "why are you even asking me?"

So, my 1st grader's remote schooling looks like this: Monday and Friday zoom meetings with the entire class. They check in, teacher goes over rules and expectations, getting a little more specific every week. Plus, a few other things. She seems to be doing an excellent job to me. All the first graders have "have-to's" of 2 or 3 math assignments and 2 or 3 writing assignments every week. They also have "can do's" involving art, for example. Plus, they are supposed to do 15 minutes of Lexia plus 15 minutes of reading every day. Since my kid is past level 10, he's just supposed to read 30 minutes every day. On Thursdays, he also has a small group meeting with a check in and short math and reading exercises. We are supposed to email a couple pictures every week of my kid reading or writing, or whatever they say. (For example, read in a fort.)
From almost the beginning, the teachers and administration have stressed the importance of mental health for the kids during this time, so they don't want the kids or parents stressing out over this. I've taken this to heart, because I'm sort of stressing out with more work right now. I hope to fill in for my current lack of attention over the summer, doing a few more educational things with the kids. I don't know what yet.

Super bad teenager day again today (the real teen, not Carrot). On days like this I just want to give up and tell him he has X number of days (weeks, months?) to pack up and find another place to live.

I hope he is able to go away to school this fall because it sounds like you could use a break.

Its hard for everyone right now. I'm doing good... breezing along, and I burn the pizza and bawl like a baby... not my typical reaction! It doesn't excuse him. But give him and mostly yourself a little grace right now.
I like to yell and scream at 'people' while driving alone in my car... i find it cathartic.

I like to yell and scream at 'people' while driving alone in my car... i find it cathartic. Me, too. One day DS was in the car with me when I was blasting about somebody doing something stupid on the road. He was about 6 and asked me when he could learn to drive because "I already know all the words."
