That is ridiculous. And I’d have probably killed the friend with the power of my mind alone. DD had to do a report on a person. Next week she has to do an oral presentation on the report, either in costume or with an appropriate symbol of the person. And at least half her class had their costume/symbol with them today. I haven’t the foggiest idea what to use as a symbol, because I’m not making a single-use costume (and trust me, this will never be worn again). It’s just a constant battle to do the homework, and there isn’t a huge amount. There’s a spelling test a week and one book report and one research report per month. Both “reports” are about a page long, so there isn’t a ton of stuff to do. But DD is a slow poke, so she regularly has to finish in-class assignments at home. That’s where the (IMO, unsustainable) volume comes from. I have no idea how long her homework should take, because of the nightly dramatics. I think it’s 10-15 minutes per night, but it’s taking 3-5 times longer. It’s really tempting to just let her not do them, but she’s so slow (and dramatic) about doing it, I’m afraid she’d never catch up. What grade? In third grade, I literally set my phone timer one night as the homework fit started, stopped when it ended and announced the 25 minute timeframe. Then, I timed how long it took to do her homework...5 minutes. She was stunned that I wasn't kidding when I said the fit was taking five times longer. We also started lighting a candle and making tea to make homework more of a tolerable ritual. I hate the single use costumes and refuse to play that game. DD usually fumbles around and finds something that will work and so far has never received a lower grade. She's in first. and that's a great idea about the timer. I'm going to try that.
We have started her doing homework in the evening at the kitchen table while I make dinner. Last night she did not get a single second to play (her words, but pretty accurate. If she hadn't carried on so much she'd have had plenty of time to play).
Thanks for the suggestions -- I should say that the costume may get worn again next year, because this report happens every year. I wonder if she could do the same person every time? (And this is why my parenting card is going to be revoked )

I'm missing the spelling bee which I feel so bad about. I was the one that helped C practice and I would love to see him up there, but I forgot to ask for the afternoon off and they're asking people to stay for the full 2 hours which I just can't do today. Grrr... I know there will be other things and dh is there, but I'm still really bummed and C was too when I told him.

Sometimes it's more nerve wrecking if the parent who cares more about the spelling bee is there. DD10 told me that when I had to miss one. She laughed that daddy couldn't spell words past the second round. I did get the play by play of her words via some crazily spelled texted lol.

Parenting takes really thinking outside the box sometimes.

I've grievously offended DH by questioning his latest cold. Apparently I never believe him. He's been complaining for 5 days, yet no one else in the family has gotten sick. He still goes to work and is planning to play games tomorrow night and all day Saturday. I just told him he doesn't appear to be suffering from any symptoms and maybe it's allergies. I suppose I should just make him go to the doctor next time.

C got 2nd place for his grade so he got over it. Lol. Dh said that the family members in the audience were horrible and I could have come in, but by the time C's grade started we really didn't have enough coverage for me to leave.

Horrible in their behavior? Loud, in and out of the gym. Lots of younger kids who couldn't hold it together for another 2 hours after school. Some of that is a catch 22. How many people have someone who can watch younger kids while you go to another kids activities. So I stayed home so I wouldn't be that person coming in late or leaving early and disrupting the kids on stage, but apparently it wouldn't have been that big a deal.

So Monday was MLK day, Tuesday was freezing rain then snow storm, Wednesday was the end of the snow storm and the roads weren't good, they had school today, but then let out 2 hours early because of blowing and drifting snow plus wind chills. And now, Friday - No school due to wind chills.
I don't blame them, but ugh and next week may be the same. Poor DH.

My kids would be so jealous. They were just saying how much they wish we'd have a snow day.

We've been getting to more challenging things in tutoring. Or maybe i'm just trying to move too fast, sigh. Anyway the 8 year old was very 'but why' the whole time today and while I explained everything to her in hands on detailed explanation, she was definitely frustrated. During word reading I was doing you pick a word to read, i pick a word to read and she wanted me to read her picks... and i was like, i'm not the one who needs to read... but she looked so dejected i relented and said i would read her picks... and she loved that control and suddenly the whole attitude was better. And actually it worked out better... takes no time for me to read a word, and i got to pick everything she read. Same with dictation. She wants me to write it down too. She barely even looks at mine now, but just not doing it 'alone' is enough i guess. Anyway, i know you can't all sit with your kids to do the work, but in a pinch letting them dictate some things you need to do can help them not feel like they are the ones always being dictated to with no control. If that makes sense.

Dubuque did have MLK day and is closed again tomorrow. Around here, the wind is really blowing the snow and the wind chill is below zero.

Sitting up holding a sick kid. She crawled in bed with us some time in the middle of the night and woke me up about an hour ago she was shivering so hard. Her temp Has gone up st least 2 degrees since then (I think. Not really awake the first time I took it.) finally got some medicine in her, but her breathing sounds so stuffed up. She was surprised when I said I was staying home with her today.

Abby has really regressed with her sleep lately. I decided to take the advice of a co-worker and call Abby's bluff. I told her she was free to get up and do whatever she wanted but mommy/daddy were sleeping and we weren't going to get up. Rinse and repeat every time she came up with a new reason I had to get up for her.
The idea of staying up suddenly stopped appealing to her when she realized she'd be running around a dark house alone. It wasn't perfect she had a bit of a meltdown but it only took 15 minutes to get her down rather than the hour or more it's been taking. We'll see if it works again tonight.

The kids had MLK day off, and a snow day today. I stayed home with them, though I did have daycare available. I didn't want to drive 40 miles on crap roads this morning for not much money. Turns out, there wasn't really that much snow, and Monday is forecast to be 5-8 inches. I always second guess myself with these things!

The news doesn't help. The younger meteorologists always act like the apocalypse is upon us if it's going to snow. Hello we live in the midwest, it's going to freaking snow during winter! I get weather prediction is not an exact science so it doesn't bother me if they end up being wrong about the severity. What frustrates me is when they are hopping up and down discussing road conditions it makes it hard to evaluate if it's worth going in or not. I stick with channel 7 now. I've read the theatrical performances are causing issues because people are becoming desensitized and ignoring severe weather warnings because they assume it's hysterics.

That's true. I heard about black ice on the radio last week, and I was skeptical because people always seem to exaggerate about stuff like that. Mental note--the radio announcers aren't exaggerating.

I take my predictions for the amount of snow from the National Weather service offices and road conditions from the state website. Of course I don't like watching the news, so I have to get my information from other places.

When the local talking heads are screaming about snow, he gets a call. I get a personalized forecast emailed within the hour. It doesn’t help with road conditions, but it makes life easier.

Anyone have a kiddo with bloody noses? Anything you do to help prevent them? We’ve got a humidifier going in C’s room, and a larger one downstairs already.
He gets them maybe every 2-4 weeks. They don’t usually last that long, but the school nurse called today to say it was “heavy” and took about 30 minutes to stop the bleeding.

My kids don't have problems, but I did for about a decade? 1) Aquaphor. On a q-tip. Up the nose. Twice a day. He will fight. It's awful. It helps. 2) Yes humidifiers. 3) Iron. If he's bleeding that much, just good to put some extra iron in him. (obv check with your doctor.) Finally: I had several capillaries in my nose cauterized. It hurt like hell. I was fifteen or so. That's whatFinally helped. I still get them sometimes, but much more rarely.
