Nasagreen - I also threw my back out while I was pregnant - but I did it sneezing! It took a couple of days, but it finally calmed down and sitting was back to it's uncomfortable norm. It's funny how moving slightly the wrong way can do all sorts of things to a pregnant body!
Insmoneymaven - Congrats on a wonderful shower! The one thing that I purchased (didn't get it at my shower) was a video monitor. I had made fun of other people for putting them on their registries - but it is one of the things I use most! I love being able to be downstairs and look in on her to make sure she is okay.
zbear - I totally get the desire for new items and wanting people to be excited for you. I am an older mom (36 now), and many of my friends either don't have kids, or their kids are older. My shower was pretty small, and I received mostly clothes (my mom friends got me more practical items like diapers and such). I'm glad that I had been saving up so I could purchase all those other items. Craigslist is my friend! I think what hurt the most about the shower is that I had to ask my friends if they were going to throw me one. I was about 7 months at the time and no one had said anything. The shower itself was lovely and fun and low-key, which was perfect (except I couldn't eat the fabulous cake - I ended up with gestational diabetes).
I'm trying to work from home today and take care of the baby. My hubby isn't feeling well, so couldn't take care of her today. That is one of the downsides of having a SAHD - we don't have a backup for childcare (and men - in general, don't flame me - don't seem to be able to push through sickness to do things like take care of a baby like moms do). I'm lucky that my job is flexible and I can work from home - but it remains to be seen how much I actually get done!
Good luck to everyone in the southeast today! hope you are prepared for the weather! (there's a reason I live in Florida...)

Regina - Mallory is adorable! blue - I know what you mean about men in general and when they get sick. It's like the world stops! At times, you want to scream at them that do I do the same thing you do? Do I act like the world is going to stop when I'm sick? Do I act like baby (no offense to babies) when I'm sick? Do I still do things around the house when I'm sick? <rant over> I live in Florida too, and it's currently foggy, misty and only a high of about 50 today.

Regina-Mallory is beautiful, thank you for posting a picture of her! zbear-I totally understand wanting things new for your first. I am the last one of my friends to have a baby (currently TTC), so I am sure we will be offered a lot of hand-me-downs, but like Ladyki we will probably just politely tell people we would prefer to buy some things new (especially a crib with all of the recent recalls, most of my friends with new babies also have the FP Little Lambs Swing, which I have read bulletins about the screws falling out and the bucket seat falling off the swing, we will be avoiding that at all costs!). I hope your family/IL understands you will want some new things for your LO! Ins-I'm glad your shower went well and you received some wonderful things! It's also good to hear that your employer is trying to find a solution to somewhat ease your workload while on maternity leave. And YAY for pampering yourself, you totally deserve it!! Gardener-I really hope your parents come around to the idea of visiting more or at least skyping. Maybe technology just isn't really that easy for them? Nasa-I'm sorry about our back, I hope you get to feeling back to normal soon!

ladyki- thanks for the suggestion! I will do that for sure, I agree there's nothing wrong with politely declining some items (which I didn't think of before this) if I really want to pick them out and am willing to buy them. I guess I was just second guessing my want for new things for my baby and my want to save some money. Maybe I can find a happy medium blue- glad your shower turned out great in the end. sorry about your DH being sick and unable to do anything! lol my DH is exactly like that when he's sick regina- mallory is beautiful! And like someone else said, she seems so wide awake.

I thought I'd say hi on the new board, and a big congratulations to Regina!!! Mallory is gorgeous <3 Life has been a bit crazy lately: planning a class, finishing a book manuscript, and DS has been sick a lot We've been dealing with a lot of wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing... I wish we knew how to control it better, but we don't. I've been thinking of you all...

Azure-Sorry to hear about DS' health woes, I hope they clear up soon!
Not positive on Drama, but we have some cruddy weather in Omaha and schools are closed for the second day, and I know some day cares as well, so she may be at home with Gwen!

Regina-Mallory is beautiful! Congratulations!
Azure-has DS been to the doctor for the cough/wheeze yet? I work in a ped's clinic and from what you're describing, he probably would benefit from breathing treatments (albuterol to open his airways and/or a steroid to decrease inflammation).

azure - I am sorry to hear that DS is sick. I hope he gets well soon!
to everyone dealing with crummy weather, hope you're getting some time to relax at home. We got about 12 inches just outside of Denver on Sunday and Monday, and temperatures have been around 10 degrees. But the sun is still shining in Colorado - my favorite reason to live here. I've been at work, but our clients are all across the country, so it's been quiet. It's nice because I can be very productive!

regina - Mallory is so cute!
azure - Glad you could check in with us. I've been wondering how you've been doing and wasn't sure if you'd come over since you were on the babycenter. Sorry to hear DS isn't well. They did have him on some meds already for the breathing issues, right? Are those not really working b/c of his allergies? Poor thing! Is the book almost done?
I also noticed drama hasn't been around. Hopefully, they're all ok.
zbear - you can always decline an offer for a hand-me-down. Usually I wouldn't want to commit without seeing the condition of the item. Of course, it is nice not to have to spend the extra money if you don't have to. Maybe just pick a few key items that you want to pick up new, like the crib and the stroller and car seats. The stroller needs to fit your needs and lifestyle. So, even if it's free, if it's hard to use, too heavy/bulky, or hard to steer, not the right height (if you or DH is tall). The happy medium is best since babies don't need brand new everything.

Haha. Oh I understand. My DH acts like he is just SO SICK and SO TIRED that he cannot even prepare himself a sandwhich for lunch. LOL. I feel like saying if I wasn't here-- I bet you'd be well enough to make that sandwhich.
Regina Mallory is beautiful! Congratulations!!!
ZBear I know what you mean about it being a "2nd/3rd time around" feeling. Not that they aren't happy, but almost like it's just another baby. I know my parents are beyond thrilled but my baby is our 1st, and my parents 2nd grandchild, DH's parents 3rd grandchild.

Regina - Mallory is beautiful! And I'm so impressed that you already wrote out your birth story. Gusita - Thinking of you and baby Brett. It's a little late to reply now, but don't feel selfish about wanting some time for just your new family - DH and I both really wanted that. We ended up not calling our families when we went to the hospital (used the excuse that it was 11:30pm and we assumed everyone would be asleep). That way, no one showed up until about 5-6 hours after the birth, by which time I was excited to be the proud mom. Azure - I'm sorry to hear that DS is sick. For my godson, it ended up being a phase that he grew out of, but it was definitely several crummy months for his parents to deal with (they did some albuteral txs too iirc). I hope you find some relief for your family soon. But exciting about your upcoming class and manuscript. My sister is a new professor at a university in Boston and your posts always remind me of all the stresses and excitement that she's going through. Insurance - I love those quiet productive days at work. And I'm jealous that you live in/near Denver. When DH and I were considering where we'd like to relocate to, Denver was very high on our list. It's main downside is that it isn't near to either of our families. Gardner - I'm sorry about your parents. We're dealing with that a little bit with DH's parents. They've only been by once since Beckett was born (they live 30-45min away). I think it's because my family (who live far away) have been in town and they're just waiting their turn so to speak, but I know it hurts DH's feelings. We even called his mom to tell her that she was welcome to come by at any time. It's tough, but I agree that all you can do is keep the lines of communication open.

Hi ladies! I just had a chance to check in. I'm trying to catch up on all I've missed. Meg, Thanks for thinking about me. I've been thinking about you too and saying prayers that everything goes well in the health department. Welcome to all the new moms on board. Regina, Mallory is absolutely beautiful. Congratulations! Gusita, When you check back in, I'm thinking about you and Baby Brett today and hoping all goes well. Avery is doing great. She's running all over the place, and she is definitely a child who is determined and knows what she wants. I have to go pick her up in a few minutes. We're getting quite a bit of snow here, and I hate having to drive with her in the car when the roads are bad. My new job is going really well. I'm actually enjoying work for the first time in a very long time. And I definitely get to spend more time with Avery. It's so nice to be there every morning when she wakes up and to be able to give her breakfast and play with her for awhile before I have to go to work.

kgb - I'm glad your new job seems to be working out so well. What a great change for you, your DH, and Avery! Reading your update on work makes me smile. I have the best friend ever - she just sent me a blue canary night light (http://bluecanarynightlight.com/) to watch over me (and Beckett). For the younger posters, it's a reference to the TMBG song "Birdhouse in Your Soul" from my high school years.

Who is TMBG? I don't think I"m that young, but maybe I just never heard that song.
kjsh - Did you see DH's parents often before Beckett was born? I do think they may be trying to give some time/space for your family since they don't live nearby. For us, DH's parents expect us to make the effort on their schedule, which isn't baby-friendly (breakfast at 2-3 pm). So, we see them mostly when we go for dinner at another relative's home, twice a month. Their place is too cluttered and smokey to bring the kids over there.
kgb - I'm glad the job is going so well! And you get more time with Avery. We do miss your posts though.
meg - I'm glad they've got a tentative diagnosis. I hope the next round of tests go fine.

Hi ladies! Baby Brett is here! He was born this morning at 6:22 AM via c-section; he weighed in at a 10 pounds, 11 ounces and was 22.5 inches long. I am absolutely in love with him, and I honestly think that DH is more in love with him than me, if that's even possible! He is positively smitten. Here's the condensed version of my birth story: I went in at 5:30 AM for my induction Monday, 1/10. They got me checked in and had the pitocin going by 7:30 AM. I was 2.5 centimeters dilated then. Everything was pretty standard until about 1:30 PM, then things kind of got wild. My water broke on its own, and the nurse said that it looked like the baby had had a bowel movement, which of course scared me to death. At that point, I was only 3 centimeters. After my water broke, the contractions started to get very painful, so I told the nurse I was ready for the epidural. I got the epidural around 2:00 PM, and at first I felt relief. Around 3:30 PM, my blood pressure started to get really high (like 159/95), so they gave me medicine to bring it down. When my blood pressure went down, this brought a bunch of nausea and vomiting with it. To make matters worse, my epidural started wearing off, and for some reason, the medicine they were trying to get to me through the epidural pump wasn't doing what it should have. From 3:30 PM to 11:30 PM, I was pretty much in a horrible cycle of the epidural wearing off so that I felt all the contractions, getting insanely dizzy, and throwing up. I only dilated to 5 centimeters, which made me feel insanely discouraged. I can honestly say that the time from 3:30 PM to 11:30 PM was pure hell; when the meds would wear off, the contractions would be one after another and insanely painful. I completely respect and admire all you ladies who have done a natural childbirth. I don't know what I would have done without DH. He was right there with me holding my hair back when I threw up, rubbing my back to try to help with the contractions, and just trying to help me any way he could. Around midnight, the anaesthesiologist came in and said that it was not normal for the epidural to do this and that she recommended having the epidural put in again (the part where they insert it into the spine). We did this, and it made a world of difference. I was able to get some sleep from 12:30-3:30 AM, partly in thanks to my DH, who was sweet enough to stay up so he could press the button on my epidural every 10 minutes to give me a shot of medicine. The nurse came in and checked me at 3:30 AM and said I was almost 7 centimeters dilated. She started to prep the room for a vaginal birth, but Brett's heart rate started to get high and it wouldn't come down. By the time I was 8.5 centimeters, the doctor said he was very uncomfortable with Brett's heart rate being so high and asked how I would feel about a c-section. I told him I was more than comfortable with getting the c-section. He said let's wait 10 minutes and see what his heart rate does. It didn't go down, and the doctor mentioned that Brett wasn't in the ideal position for a vaginal birth (he was sunny side up and crooked). They prepped me for the c-section, and off we went! The c-section went very smoothly, and Brett came into the world at 6:22 AM, weighing in at a whopping 10 pounds and 11 ounces. They checked him out, and it looks like he didn't swallow any meconium (sp?). I am soooooo thankful I got the c-section. I just can't imagine what baby Brett would have done to my lady parts, if I had even been able to push him out since his positioning was all off. DH and I are both tired, but doing great! Baby Brett will be spending the night in the nursery tonight so we can get some much needed rest. DH has been WONDERFUL taking care of him though. He changed his first diaper ever today and it only took 3 diapers and about 15 wipes to do it, LOL! I'm sure he'll get faster with practice. I feel pretty good. Motrin seems to be handling the pain pretty well. I am trying to get a pic to post right now. Regina-Congrats on Mallory! She is an absolute doll. I have HUGE respect for you for being able to do the whole thing naturally (you too Econ!) I've just gotten a chance to skim through real quickly. Hope everyone is doing well!

I had to drive home cause he was in so much pain, and when I tried to tell him something he told me not to talk to him right now, lol. Men, they cant handle pain, no wonder why we are the ones that have to give labor.

Congratulations, Gusita!!!! What a beautiful little boy! Happy Birthday, Brett!!!! Wow, so exciting to have so many births. As for DS: he is already on many medications. He gets 2x daily inhaled pulmocort (sp???) and albuterol as needed through a nebulizer. With this last flare he was getting the albuterol (same medicine as an inhaler) every 4 hours. It still went on and on. He is now additionally on an oral steroid, prednisone. I HATE the steroids for him. The are also known to mess up growth. OTOH, he weighed in at 25 lbs today, which isn't bad for 7 months, lol. We are still riding the allergy train. I am dairy, soy, gluten, nut, peanut, and shellfish free. He had a severe reaction to some pecans I had, and has pretty bad reactions to soy. We aren't as sure on the gluten, because it is much easier to avoid accidental exposure than soy (basically, we will have an "oops" trial of an offender, like soy, which lets us know it bothers him). Most gluten-free products are clearly labeled, but soy is tough! The time has come to see specialist, we will get the referral on Thursday and off to the hospital we will go. He is such a great baby: happy, smiling, dimpled, super talkative. We say that he has to have this because no baby can be perfect

Congratulations to all the proud moms (and dads) of the beautiful new babies! boo's mom: TMBG = They Might Be Giants. Apparently, I am old enough. gusita: I don't know if your doctor told you, but the medication to control your BP (usually magnesium) can cause dizziness, nausea, trouble focusing your eyes, etc. It also works against the pitocin, which may be what happened to you. I had pre-e with baby girl, and my birth was rather similar to yours (except since it was more than three weeks early, baby girl was much smaller!) My story is buried somewhere on the old thread if you are curious. Make sure you get as much rest as you can in the hospital. High BP + long labor + c-section = tired mommy. I am officially off all birth control now. I know that it will be months before I am really TTC, but seeing all the photos and hearing your stories, I want to be pregnant right now!

guista - Congratulations and you have an adorable baby boy! #laugh#
kristi - I went off BC in June, didn't really start trying until November, and I know exactly what you mean. However, I was more than okay waiting until November to TTC due to my work (I'm a CPA and my 2nd trimester is during busy season). #laugh#
