West, who did 65 campaign events for Obama, believed in the potential for change and was encouraged by the populist rhetoric of the Obama campaign. He now nurses, like many others who placed their faith in Obama, the anguish of the deceived, , ,
“I was thinking maybe he has at least some progressive populist instincts that could become more manifest after the cautious policies of being a senator and working with [Sen. Joe] Lieberman as his mentor,” he says. “But it became very clear when I looked at the neoliberal economic team. The first announcement of Summers and Geithner I went ballistic. I said, ‘Oh, my God, I have really been misled. . . .

Oh, to be sure-- the fact he is just an Ivy League blowhard isn't the only irony in all of his rant.

Now, don't we have someone around here who likes to refer to large groups of people as "misled" (among other expletives)? Perhaps he should meet Mr. West...

So a privileged black guy is saying that because another black guy didn't grow up in whatever context he thinks black people should grow up in, he can't relate to other black people? Huh. Good to know. Does that hold true for white people too?

Joe] Lieberman as his mentor,” he says. “But it became very clear when I looked at the neoliberal economic team. The first announcement of (Lawrence) Summers and Geithner I went ballistic. I said, ‘Oh, my God, I have really been misled at a very deep level.’ And the same is true for Dennis Ross and the other neo-imperial elites. I said, ‘I have been thoroughly misled, all this populist language is just a facade. I was under the impression that he might bring in the voices of brother Joseph Stiglitz and brother Paul Krugman. I figured, OK, given the structure of constraints of the capitalist democratic procedure that’s probably the best he could do. But at least he would have some voices concerned about working people, dealing with issues of jobs and downsizing and banks, some semblance of democratic accountability for Wall Street oligarchs and corporate plutocrats who are just running amuck. I was completely wrong.” (from OP link) Poor duped populi.. Obama delivered up Fascistic Keynesian Socialism instead of a ready made Venezuela style Participatory Democracy.
Welcome to the real world.
Should have listened to his words and ignored your lying eyes. He wasn't exactly a pig in a poke.traditionalliberalism.blogspot.com/2010/09/fascism-keynesianism-socialism.html

Good to know. Does that hold true for white people too? No, because white people don't have the same issue with "authenticity" that many black people have. You don't hear a white person saying another white person isn't "white enough", do you?

Wow, I might have to defend Barry again!
That said, I have commented before: the same kids who used to beat up Barry for not being black enough (only half black, well educated) are the same who now embrace him.
Life is just funny that way.

You don't hear a white person saying another white person isn't "white enough", do you? Ed is exactly right. Although I understand Cornell West's perspective, I don't agree with it. Barack Obama was raised in a caucasian household even though he had an African father. So his upbringing is not a conventional one. Additionally, Africans look down on Black Americans, as if they are better, so even if his father stuck around and they continued to live in the US, he wouldn't have been encouraged to hang around black americans. Additionally there is a problem with Black Americans with respect to skin tone. The perception is lighter skinned blacks are treated better than darker skinned blacks because they appear less threatening. As a black woman, although very light complexioned, I have heard this plenty of times in the workplace and have always heard how I think I am better because I am light as a child growing up all the way to adulthood. It was a bit worse for my older sisters, who all have blue, green and grey eyes, with that type of conflict because of how they looked.

The "skin tone thing" is the result of slavery. And there must be some validity to the perception that lighter is better, because there are plenty of very light blacks that passed as white because it was easier for them to survive. I even know of a few families in the Maryland area who were encouraged to only marry light (even intermarry), so that their children would be also. It is a sick, sick thing honestly.
