The economic recovery for this New Year remains fragile. So diversification although possibly a trite term is crucial. Take some stock and bond review and look at deploying it into other assets classes that offer more attractive risk, returns and trade offs.
Talk to an investment adviser about new funds that invest in emerging markets, and new technologies . But are new and also attractive options for a well diversified portfolio.
Another consideration is income funds that will offer opportunities as interest rates rise.

Isn't this board Politics and the Markets.....?? And remember what Charles Hunger said about Investing: "IF YOU BUY A FEW GREAT COMPANIES YOU CAN SIT ON YOUR ASS" which is not such a bad place to be..

I meant more along te lines that there is a "start investing" and "market talk" board that you may bet a better response.

New products at the Consumer Electronics Show are a barometer for the technology industry sectors overall health ...tech companies could be recovering from the implosion in 2008. CEA released a report showing increased consumer spending so now the challenge is to find the products that are worthy of investing some big bucks in and holding on for the ride companies that might be worth a second look include Motorola, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Notion Inc, Hewlett Packard, and last but not least Research in Motion...

That is a great question and why I started this thread but here's some ideas:
4G networks Super phones, 3-D TVs, Electric Vehicles, Windows Tablets,
But which one will be a hit and which one will be a miss..??

Peter Lynch made tons of millions of megabucks by doing one simple thing he picked winners in Consumer Electronics and held onto them for a few years until the fad or appeal began to whane...and then cashed in his winners...
Also Ford, Audi, GM and other auto companies are adding entertainment and communications Consumer Electronics to their SUV's which could be the new big thing or electric batteries for their hybrids or all electric vehicles...but among all of these products being shown in Los Vegas there will be some big winners and Tablets are stealing the show..

Invest in companies that produce high end surge protectors. We'll be seeing an increase in the need for them. Sometimes it's the little things that end up being "the next big thing".

Also a new small company who produces some essential component can be bought by one of the Big Boys i.e Dell, Toshiba, America Inc, Samsung, Motorola, and Hewlett Packard acquiring a host of smaller manufacturers

The electric vehicles may be a hit if the gas prices go wild. But they are currently a minor part of GM's and Nissan's line up. I would think the whole market would have to shift for there to be any real effect on the bottom line, which just given the cost, technology and production capacity seems to me to be a bit further down the road. The problem isn't the price of fuel...it's the technology itself. Gas could go to $12/gallon, I still wouldn't drive an EV. The range isn't there for me. Me either...and again, the technology isn't there. As I understand it, very few stations even offer 3D programming and who really wants to sit there with them glasses on...although they are more stylish than the cardboard red/blue 3D glasses of yester-year. I have the 3G Droid Incredible that I bought DW for her birthday (hey...it was a BOGO sale at Verizon so it was happy b-day to me too) but that is as "super phone" as I'll be getting for a while.

Give us your new next big thing since you don't like any of ours I am looking at components that could be the biggest of the big new things...electric batteries, microprocessors, software, ..

Give us your new next big thing since you don't like any of ours I am looking at components that could be the biggest of the big new things...electric batteries, microprocessors, software, .. Other than the EV which, for me, isn't practical (range is seriously lacking), I never said I don't "like" the technologies mentioned here. I guess I'm just not the type of guy that has to rush out and buy the latest technology. I do agree that tablets and cell phones will dominate the market in the next couple years. In fact, I'd look for more powerful PC/laptop technologies (like dual core processors and such) to be installed in cell phones and tablets...if they're not already.

Ok here's where my focus is :
1. Components that are enerygy efficient
2. Recycled materials
3. Components that increase the life of their products
Companies who are attempting to meet these three goals might be worth considering since Web enabled TVs, Blueray players, game consoles and other devices and apps are expected to soar in sales over the next five years.. Now the challenge is to pick the winners ..

There are a few companies that are marketing whole house surge protectors that install directly into the circuit breaker. They offer high dollar protection against failure. I see these becoming the norm. These will start to really become popular once a few glasses-less TVs are out. The Technology is there, the production and cost have to even out, once they do people will be replacing their flat panels with 3-D. technorati.com/technology/sony-3d-holiday/article/glasses-free-3dtv-closer-than-we/Tablets are popular, you can expect to see them really take off once they incorporate dual processors. They will replace the laptops. www.sizlopedia.com/2011/01/06/meet-motorola-xoom-the-dual-core-processor-sporting-honeycomb-tablet/These are becoming more mainstream, you can pick up panels at Lowes, and HomeDepot. As these become more efficient and cheaper people will buy them up. They have Panels that work even in snowy conditions. I have seen flexible panels that roll out like sheets of paper. These will be huge. www.siliconsolar.com/flexible-solar-panels.htmlNano technology will be the deal changer. There is currently a company that has developed a nano battery the size of a postage stamp and just as thin. The battery charges and holds a charge longer then standard batteries. These nano batteries can be produced in large sheets, enough power to power a auto, but still remain thin as a sheet of paper and flexible. This will take the weight out of every electrical battery operated device, and allow a electrical car to be truly electrical. The cost of producing the nano tubes are extremely high, once that cost comes down you will see nano tubes and technology in everything. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NanobatteriesJust my thoughts. - Added links.
