I know this has probably been addressed somewhere else but can't find it.
Usually open this board and lurk before heading out. Did so this morning, but when came back was "told" I had to log in to even view.
Anyone else run into this or did the board change in the last hour or so regarding viewing without logging in?

I got the same thing and just figured I wasn't fully awake and was a little too click happy. Guess I am more awake than I thought.

yes, i have made it to where you have to sign in to view. BUT, i think i am going to change it back because potential new members will not be able to look around and 'try it on' first and that may drive them away.
even if a troll posts as a guest, we can still gather the information required to ban them.
Likewise, if a registered member creates a new name (but posts as a guest) for purposes of causing trouble, we can tell that too. As far as I'm concerned, that's the same as multi-nicking and will also earn a ban of that member. Further update to the CoC will be forthcoming to include that.

I'm one of those people that won't sign up for something when I'm not sure what it is and how it works. So yes, that may drive some new people away.

i don't like signing up for stuff unless i have to either.. just a 'thing' i have...
as i think about it though, i remember that i can modify each board individually to where everyone can view but only registered members can post. i think that would work!

Yeah...if you don't like what you see, you can just delete yourself. Er...delete your name as a member, that is.

I've visited other boards like that. You can read the posts, and get an idea of what the forum's about before joining, but registration's required in order to participate.

I don't mind having to register before I can participate in a forum. I just won't register without having a chance to see what it is. Maybe it's just a quirk of mine. I resisted facebook for a long time because I couldn't check it out without registering. DD (college student) got exasperated with me, logged in on her account to let me see what it was, then created an account for her technologically challegened Mom. I'm not trying to tell you what to do Moonbeam. You're doing such a great job here. I was just offering my opinion.

Pink, Good idea.
FYI, I noticed yesterday unlike MSN I stay logged in even if I closed the browser window I was using. A reboot will log me off though.

< But really whats the problem if you sign up and dont like it,you just slip away >
I know most of us are coming from the old MSN boards and intend to stay here so signing up for a new account is no big deal. But I know if I'm looking around the net and a site requires me to sign up for a new account before I can continue, most of the time I'll just move on. However, I also recognize the issues the mods are facing.

Of course, I hate that their are evil trolls out there that are even making this an issue.

Agree and believe it or not, I actually was a moderator on another board (I know, I know, doesn't seem possible) and as soon as the creator decided to make membership mandatory, the site died. The main reason for the membership thing was the amount of spam and some really crass language - the few moderators on that site spent a lot of time deleting stuff posted by those from the shallow end of the gene pool - you know, the end that has an extremely high concentration of chlorine!

< and as soon as the creator decided to make membership mandatory, the site died. >
Some admins just seem to exist to make using the site difficult. One of the old MSN groups I belonged to had a minimum posting requirement and a bunch of other silly rules. Then the group manager complained about all the time it took to keep track that members were abidding by their rules. When I pointed out (and I did try to be polite but it was a hot issue with them) that the time they had to spend was of their own chosing, I was unjoined as a member.

Not really. If someone wants to set up a bunch of silly rules and then gets upset if it gets pointed out to them, that's their issue. There were lots of groups out there.

The first MSN group I joined after Your Money on the old boards was The Cool, Interesting People. We had that group shuttered, and the next, and the next. Part of it was due to what things got posted and some was due to trolls that would keep complaining to MSN because we harassed the hell out of them until MSN I think got tired of the stream of complaints and just shut us down. Not a huge loss, we'd just create a new group and recreate the site.
