The people here would hate him. I don't know about that. Reading your story I just feel bad that he completely wasted his life.

Sorry for your loss Horatio. Often, friends do make mistakes (and hopefully we learn from them). Not easy to lose a friend you've known for years. Been there. ![](http://messenger.msn.com/MMM2006-04-19_17.00/Resource/emoticons/wilted_rose.gif)

Condolances on your loss.
I know people who are like that and am sorry to say I have been an enabler by providing housing when they were down and out. Now they think they own the place.

He must have had good qualities if he was your best friend for so long. What were they?

That's a sad story, Horatio, and no, I don't hate people like that. Your friend could not have had a happy life even though he managed to get money for his basic needs. I watched my ex-husband, a brilliant, gifted inorganic chemist, slide into permanent unemployment and dependency on social programs and (eventually) SS. He died last September and I still can't look at a street person, especially men that age, without thinking of him. While I didn't know your friend, I wonder if some sort of mental illness was involved. We talk about choices and responsibility, but I can't believe anyone mentally healthy would choose that existence.

Sorry for your loss. It does sound as if depression played a role.
I have had people in my life like him, and have had to cut them loose...not because I hated them, but because the frustration and sadness of interacting with them were too much for me. I have compassion for them, but I can't devote my energy to them.

Horatio, I am so sorry for your loss.
I would not have hated your friend. I would not have understood him and I probably would have felt he had some mental issues going on. I probably would have felt sorry for him.

My condolences on your friend's passing.
I agree with what many of the other posters have said. Many of us are so incensed by welfare dependence or fraud because we see what it does to the individual. Once it changes your incentives for work, creativity, and productivity, it can place your life on an awful trajectory. I have seen it with family and friends.

My condolences on your loss as well.
I know that people looking at my DH would have likely thought a similar thing to what happened with your friend. He got on SSDI after a very serious MRSA infection did permanent damage to his legs. But, in addition to the physical injury, he was also a mental health disaster...
He was very seriously overweight and that got worse because he didn't work and was home 24/7.
When he would use the placard to park near the store, because he couldn't walk far because of his legs, a failed knee joint, and because dialysis had run him down, people would stare and I am sure assume that he was just lazy, and parked there because he was fat. Same thing for when he would use the cart inside the grocery store.
Sometimes fat is secondary to other problems that you might not see...
