We bought our old house 4 years ago and the tub looked great. My husband found it to slippery so we bought one of those suction cup bath mat things for it. A few weeks later I noticed the tub was bubbling up where the bathmat was and starting to peel so obviously it had been resurfaced. Well now it's peeling bad. Does anyone know if it can be re-surfaced again or do we need a new tub? I'm not comfortable taking a bath in it anymore.. afraid of slivers! Thanks in advance for any input.

I'd get an estimate from a contractor who knows what he's doing. It might be cheaper at this point to replace it.

I don't know if you can refinish a tub the second time but I would check into it. Replacing a bathtub can be an expensive job.

It might be worth it to just have it refinished due to size as well. Water conservation has lead to the manufacturing of tubs that barely hold any water, something I really missed when I went from an old, rented house to one I'd bought with a remodeled bathroom. I loved it when I bought a different house with a big tub again. I mostly do showers, so when I want to soak in the tub I want to be able to be completely surrounded by the water, not have just a little tiny bit in the tub with me! I had thought about remodeling my bathroom, but decided if I did I would just refinish the old tub. Now I've just decided to build a new house instead

I don't know if this would be feasible or not, but there are also bath liners and surround liners. Bath Fitters is an example ( www.bathfitter.com/bath_remodeling.aspx ). Something else to check out...

A bathtub can be resurfaced a second time, but you have to get a REALLY GOOD contractor doing it as the old stuff has to all be removed before the new stuff can be applied. In addition, you have to be extremely careful of what you use to clean them - NO ABRASIVES whatsoever.
Depending on your finances, I would opt to replace rather than to resurface. It will cost more up front, but it will look better for a MUCH longer time.

Well the whole bathroom really needs some attention. I was hoping to expand it into a large 1/2 empty linen closet in a few years but might be better off repacing tub and just doing some cosmetic updates for now. It's not horrible (except for the tub) but it is ugly and although I don't use the tub often I do miss it. I will have to consider all the options and budget. Thanks everyone.
