Don't you just luv when you sit down to relax and watch a little HISTORY channel as they say. We will call the show PWN Stars for this thread.. Bills from 1898 Special editions good condition 1- $1- $700 1-$2- $2500 1-$5-$7500 But wait there's more.. the highest paid price paid in HISTORY as they say, for the set of these three(3) bills.. $51,570 Paper currency that these big bad central bankers push on us is nothing but worthless FIAT paper?? I think not.. Hey if it's just an ordinary bill from that period in rough shape, it's only worth about $20. That's one, 1, bill!!!

Since the Fed got in, isn't $8 in 1898 dollars worth about $51,750? If not, give Ben a few more months.

I've got a 1953 $ 5.00 Silver Certificate and a 1955 $1 Bill - Any offers?
I'll take less than $50,000! ;D

Canadian $1 bills, which went by the wayside close to two decades ago now, are worth anywhere from $20-$50.
Nobody here has ever regretted moving to the loonie and toonie.

I think i am going to start saving a few bills here and there.. Ill take even 200% over two decades. They are talking about making our bills out of something besides paper. How about that? A new investment idea.

Hoarding obsolete currencies is one of those investing ideas that's good in theory but impractical in real life.
Let's face it: how many $1 bills (in regular circulation, no less) is any one buyer going to purchase? Maybe a set of 3 or 5, if you're lucky.
So suppose you wanted to make even a $1,000 selling $1 bills for 20 times their original value. You'd have to bargain with 20 different buyers at least. And suppose you spend 5 hours identifying, meeting, bargaining, exchanging, shipping, etc. with each buyer. You've put in 100 hours effort to make $980 profit, which is what you could've made slinging coffee at Tim's.

Or you just play it smart and sell it to a collection shop for 50% less than retail.. Plus slinging coffie is work, saving bills is not.

You obviously haven't had much experience with numismatists. These people collect coins for fun. "OK. So here are the bills. Sixty bucks for 'em." "I see. Yes. Yes. You know, the 1989 bill featured a picture of the Queen taken after she attended a gala dinner hosted by then-Russian premier Gorbachev. You see in the depiction, there's 38 beads on her necklace. Interesting story, because there were originally going to be 36, but Gorbachev insisted on 38 for a most unusual reason... ..." <6 hours later> "...and thus the number of descendants from Mr. Barisov's line of the family--excluding the two branches I mentioned earlier--totaled 38, once again reinforcing in Mr. Gorbachev's mind the significance of the number..." ...

My grandfather (who's still alive and in remarkably good shape, I should add ) has an impressive collection of coins and bills. He's a member of a fairly large club. I accompanied him on a few trips to showings, auctions, exchanges, when I was younger. My view of numismatics might have been coloured by my age at the time. Frankly, the only thing that could have made those discussions bearable for them was the plentiful supply of double malt whiskey on hand.
