the Hague Convention and international custody law

I just finished watching Dateline, tonight's show had an update on Sean and David Goldman. if you're unfamiliar with their case, Sean was kidnapped by his Brazilian-born mother at age 4 on a "vacation" to visit Brazilian relatives. his father spent the next 5 years fighting to have his son returned to him, even after Sean's mother passed away.

I've followed this story through the Today Show, and am absolutely appalled at how Brazil blatantly spits in the face of the Hague Convention as far as custody laws are concerned. I'm further appalled by Sean's grandmother in Brazil, who is shunning visitation because it comes with a condition that she drop all litigation in regards to Sean's custody and visitation. she continues to whine to anyone that will listen that David Goldman is "keeping Sean from his family" and that is damaging the child. um....really? sounds like exactly what you did to his FATHER for 5 years. sorry, you lose.

thankfully, the update showed Sean flourishing back home with his dad in NJ. Sean's been home about a year and a half, having been turned over to David at the US embassy on xmas eve of '09 in a ridiculously unnecessary media madhouse.

anyone else catch Dateline tonight? or know the story? I'm curious what y'all think about the law, how this case was handled, and all that. I've been pulling for David to be able to bring Sean home, and I'm very happy to see him doing well.

Yes, I remember the story. I didn't watch Dateline tonight, but I'm happy to hear Sean and David are doing fine. I was certainly pulling for them back when the story was a media circus. Thanks for the update.
