I have three dogs. Started with one which was sort of a rescue. A breeder had 4 Red&White Irish Setter pups from a litter she could not find homes for. They were six months old. Three were boys and one girl. The little girl laid her head on my wife's lap and that was it. She was our pick. Turns out one week later when I took her to my vet to check her out and after numerous tests she was found to have a serious congentital condition where her liver was not fully developed. She was given less than a year to live. But working with my vet we put her on a low protien diet and made sure she got plenty of exercise. At the predetermined six months I was contacted by a setter rescue that needed a home for a Gordon Setter. We thought that having another dog would lessen the blow of losing the girl. It took about six months for the rescue to get used to his new forever home but he had a playmate. About two years later my daughter decided she wanted a dog of her own. We got a dandy Red Irish puppy. Red & White bonded immediately. They ran together and played all day. Big Red is now 110 pounds but still plays with his surrogate mom. Oh, yeah..... Red & White is now five years old and for unexplained reasons her liver has regenerated to full capacity. Gee? I wonder? Could any of the conditions she was subjected to help prolong her life? What do you think? Sorry to go on. Could not help but read the story about the British Soldier and his bomb sniffing dog. Both were returned home to Scotland for burial together. He was killed in Afganistan during a firefight and his friend died 3 hours later of stress related trauma. Many think it was a broken heart. Who says dogs don't have a deep love for their human regardless of conditions. Breaks my heart.

I adopted a cat from the Humane Society today. She's 4 1/2 years old and gorgeous.
She had been adopted last September but was returned in February because she was terrified of the dogs. Here, she only has to put up with me. We're in the getting to know each other phase. So far, so good.

We're in the getting to know each other phase. So far, so good.It takes time. When I brought my dog home he promptly set up home in my utility room and stayed there. I'd take him out for walks and his business but always on a leash as I was worried he might not think this was "home". He'd poke his nose around the corner to watch me on the couch but as soon as I would turn to look at him he'd run back to the utility room. As time spent he slowly warmed up and now he lives on my chest if I lie down on the couch . And he gets heavy. It took him even longer for him to realize the bed was available for sleeping. The staff at the shelter later confessed they were never to glad to see a dog leave as he would bark constantly except when he sleeping. They couldn't believe it when I said he never barks, even when people come to the door and knock. You might get the odd woof out of him when he really needs to go outside and isn't successful getting my attention another way. He's so cute and he knows it.

2 for 2, but thank God we don't have to get the answers correct for them to get their kibble. The past week we'd have some hungry babies with me answering the questions!
