is this as good as it's going to get and we will look back to "now" and say we had it good? I'm losing my optimism. Maybe just this flu/cold thing I can't seem to shake.

A couple years from now this will be the "good times". Maybe.
Don't lose your optimism. The economy has been cycling up & down forever. Political parties have been disagreeing forever. Same stuff, different day.
It's a beautiful day outside. Go out & enjoy the day. Maybe a little springtime walk will lift your spirits!

In reality, don't we all live better than the vast majority of the world and the vast majority of the history of mankind? Very true. Will we continue to do so? That to me is the question of the OP.

Quite honestly, yes, we've been through different economic cycles, but I have never lived through one that has been this bad for this long and has effected so many people. I do hope that things improve, but I am less than hopeful that much will change in the next couple of years. Unless the government gets serious getting out of the way of private business (so they can create jobs) and gets serious about doing something about the deficit and the national debt, I do not think that things will improve.

I see a new golden age starting now, for the non rich for a change. The rich always do fine. Affordable health care for all is huge, will save many lives and make tntrepreneurship and changinging jobs less risky and get people off welfare to get medicaid, and efforts to make education better and less expensive will help produce workers better adapted for a global economy (NHC will help too).Maybe even get 1 month vacations, parental leave, and better min wage like the rest of the modern world.
Dancin, sounds great but always ends up in fraud, boom, bubble, and BUST. I'd like more stability.

I had a good day yesterday. Today is pretty darn swell too. I expect tomorrow to be no less.

We make our own good times, even in the midst of difficult times. Your perception will be what you make of it. I'm able to find things to smile, or laugh about daily.

My wonderful DH is currently home (and not deployed to a combat zone), so this is definitely a "good time." Oh, and I have kittens!

Please read The Way We Never Were.... yesterday was always the 'good times'... Well I really can't agree that "yesterday" were the good times for many of us. From the stories I've heard from my grandparents, books I've read, I think things were much tougher for them than for me. Even better for my parents, even better for me. From here on out though I'm not sure. My grandparents had it better in the later years of life. I may have had it better in the earlier years of life and wonder about the next few generations. I think I may have been misunderstood, personally my life is still pretty good but as I look down the road I don't see it getting better for future generations. Hope I'm wrong. It hasn't been a beautiful day here until now, so now I'm going outside.

We can only live in the here and now. Future generations will have to find their own way.

Read "The Good Old Days- They Were Terrible". About 1880-1910 or so- Horrible working and living conditions for almost everyone. I'm trying to get back to the fifties, sixties, early seventies, except with blacks, etc, on board. We no longer have the greatest generation and unions in charge, so we need gov't help to have a minimum good jobs, and since health care has gotten so expensive, Affordable Health Care. And since higher education has gotten so expenisve, cheap as possible loans. And the end of Voodoo, because that DOESN'T WORK.

Even 'tho these times can get discouraging, my parents were children and teenagers during the Great Depression. I figure they survived about 10 years of horrible conditions, one grandparent lost his farm to the bank in foreclosure. But, neighbors banded together, grandpa moved the family to another farm & worked it as a sharecropper. The key is in tough times to be creative. No job is beneath you, anyone can live temporarily is housing that's more cramped than you're used to. Adapt, adapt, adapt. Things always get better eventually (even if it's not on my personal timetable). And, appreciate all of the good things in your life. Example: today is Mother's Day and my tulips are blooming! My glass is always at least 1/2 full (not 1/2 empty).

I think this is as good as it gets & it's going to go down hill from here. But I could be wrong, maybe we will have an armed revolt & it will get better.

When you ask "Are these the good times?", who are you asking? My DH and I bust our butts trying to make ends meet and giving a nice lifestyle to our children. Hopefully, they will look back and see this time as good times. I had a great childhood. No real worries, never scared, hungry, or cold. My grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins got along. We had WONDERFUL family parties . I'm trying to do this for my children. Good times for me? Yea, if the kids are happy, if we all stay healthy, if we get to go to work, yea, we can say these are good times. As for tomorrow, who knows?
