I live in Tucson, a little liberal hotbed in the middle of a conservative state. Our politics are disgraceful, and people like to complain that Phoenix is encroaching on our liberal little pueblo.... I stay involved, but it is almost painful.
Last year we managed to get the first conservative in over 20 years on the city council, and they just HATE him. They also HATE our local conservative talk show host, that keeps us informed 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, about what is REALLY going on in town with the insane liberals. Several years running he has won the award for best radio show... they really HATE that, too. I really recommend looking for your local conservative talk radio and seeing if they have a local talker if you live in a very liberal area.
If it was left up to our newspaper, and TV news, conservatives would have NO idea what is going on-- we have to dig. Reading the paper will make you think there are no illegals, our Gov is an evil racist, and so is anyone that pays attention to her, the air force base is evil because it has loud planes that damage our quality of life (even though they are tied with the university as the biggest employer in town), and the people that shoot people need graffiti art programs and it will all be okay. Yeah.
Try to get involved. Budget cuts were fun last year. Our conservative councilman went through the budget line by line, exposed it to the public through our local talk guy, and we SLAMMED the feel good crud. You really would not believe the things we were spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on... for 20+ years. Liberal are ANGRY at us.
NEVER trust local gov't. Question every single thing they do. Demand they explain, challenge them to prove what they say, tell them NO if it is absurd, then vote them out first chance you get. Go to city council meeting.. liberals never miss them, and they come armed with protest signs and big mouths. Good luck.

My town is pretty conservative. A couple of years ago, when the bottom dropped out, they gave most businesses a lower property assessment to help them out. No problem, other than the bills and costs remained the same,if not increased, and then they shifted more of the burden onto homeowners with higher assessments, and a raise in the multiplier . Between this and a general county across the board increase, most homeowners saw increases of over 1700 a year. Some were higher. That can translate to a huge increase on your mortgage if it includes escrow. Now that business has picked up, sales are good, andbottom lines looking good,I see no attempt to readjust and doubt I will. Homeowners are ticked and waiting for elections.

Yeah- if you are a liberal living in a conservative area, I would offer the same advice. If you want your interests represented locally, which is really important, you have to get involved. Never just assume gov't is doing the right thing. When I was driving my cab I had an open schedule, and could attend things like city council meetings. Even the really big controversy issues would only have at most a few hundred turn out. And it is pretty much the same people all the time-- with really loud mouths. Not everyone can miss work or whatever, but IMO it is important if people CAN to show up and listen. Local gov'ts do just as much damage as Feds, and can actually do things that affect your quality of life. Here in Tucson we have ongoing efforts to mess with our military base, which IS insane, because they are a top civilian employer. You gotta watch these people.

I follow local politics pretty closely, and am usually involved in several campaigns during election season.

I don't know how people choose to vote for if they do not pay attention. Seems many people just don't vote local. SO important what cities and states do.
