EDUCATION RIOT POLICE CALLED IN TO RESTORE ORDER AT TUCSON SCHOOL BOARD MTG. Posted on May 4, 2011 Rowdy protesters in Tucson have struck again. And this time, it involves riot police. Those protesters are hell-bent on keeping the district’s shocking, and concerning, Mexican-American studies program as-is. And while they’re causing a ruckus to prove it, there could be a lot more behind the story — mainly, who’s behind the protests. (Watch the original video of students taking over a previous meeting.) (See excerpts from the curriculum.) At a Tucson Unified School District school board meeting on Tuesday — which was a make-up for one canceled after students chained themselves to board-room desks on April 26 — riot police were called in to restore order after program supporters become restless during the public input section of the meeting. latino.foxnews.com/latino/lifestyle/2011/05/05/beginning-cinco-mayo-debt/Lifestyle At the Beginning, Cinco de Mayo Was All About Debt By Michele Serros Published May 05, 2011 | Fox News LatinoAs a young Latina growing in California, I, like many of my peers, mistook Cinco de Mayo for Mexican Independence Day. I celebrated CdM (in teen text speak) in the typical fashion: holding a strawberry margarita in one hand while sporting the prerequisite off-the-shoulder ruffled blouse (white) and sombero-wearing boyfriend (also white). Yes, who wouldn’t enjoy such tequila revelry? I sure did, even when I learned that CdM is not Independence Day, but actually a date that commemorates the Battle of Puebla, in which a small Mexican Army fought and defeated a French Army nearly double in size. While this episode in Mexican history is celebrated on a minimal level in Mexico, the victory has become quite the grand excuse for American to, well, see above paragraph. So why did the France even invade Mexico back in 1862? Aside from ol’ Napoleon vying for an additional empire, he was fed up by (then Mexican President) Benito Juárez’s suspension of Mexico’s debt to France. He wanted the cash owed them. MORE

Well, let's see here, bills. I am trying to help people that approve of the radicalization of young illegal and legal kids out today-- video was a Dem woman that investigated. Story is an NPR contributor. As my Democrat friend Sweet Virginia has told me, this is not a party issue, it is an American issue. But thanks for the snark, any way.
Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Around here, Cinco de Mayo is pretty much an excuse for many people to eat Mexican food, drink margaritas and Corona, and to jam-pack many/most local Mexican restaurants.
I doubt most people know it's commemorating the 1862 battle of Mexico over France.
(And am I bad at thinking that pretty much every country's won battles against France, so why celebrate?)

Here in Tucson it is a major drunk holiday, with lots of guns involved. Every year one or more people get shot at "parties." It's a good night for cab drivers, though, if you have a high tolerance for drunks. Cinco de Mayo lasts about 3 days here usually, and is usually accompanied by anti-America protests and rallies. I don't remember it being so nasty when I was back in TX, but then again, that was 20+ years ago, and I was still in my margarita stage myself... ;D

Barletta goes national with immigration fightFormer Hazleton mayor, now congressman, offers bill targeting 'sanctuary cities.'WASHINGTON -- After just a little more than 100 days in office, U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, who gained national attention for implementing strict anti-illegal immigration laws as mayor of Hazleton, has made the topic his first solo initiative on Capitol Hill. Standing alone at a podium before a sprinkling of reporters Wednesday morning, Barletta said he was in the process of crafting a bill that would withhold all federal funding from so-called "sanctuary cities," those that do not fully enforce federal immigration laws. www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=news&cd=1&sqi=2&ved=0CDsQqQIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.latimes.com%2Fnews%2Fpolitics%2Fmc-lou-barletta-illegal-immigration-20110504%2C0%2C7481515.story&ei=U7rCTZjfCYH4swPIx5XyDw&usg=AFQjCNG4hOHClCBIYfpne7WbE2Ybw-NMxQ"If the federal government wants to sue the state of Arizona because it claims the state is breaking federal law, then it should also sue the mayors of sanctuary cities because they are willfully breaking federal immigration law," Barletta said. "Local elected officials who choose to ignore enforcement of federal immigration policy are aiding and assisting illegal aliens.
They should not receive millions or even billions in tax dollars as a reward."

Far as I know it is not really a big deal in Mexico, except I think near where the battle happened. I plan to eat Mexican food and have a few Corona's to celebrate.

www.cozumelmycozumel.com/Pages/CozumelHolidaysCincodeMayo.htmWhen visitors or tourists inquire what we do here in Cozumel on May 5th, we respond by describing the traditional festivities at El Cedral. More often than not, they’re surprised to learn that Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday on Mexico’s calendar and passes by every year with little or no fanfare. Because the day is observed with such exuberance in the United States, many Americans, including some of Mexican descent, believe that Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico's war of independence or the Mexican Revolution. The recent tradition of Cinco de Mayo celebrations across the U.S. is certainly a great example of clever marketing and commercial success, but the true story behind Mexican independence day is much more fascinating. WHAT IS CINCO DE MAYO? Many believe that Cinco de Mayo became popular with the Mexican-American community as a result of the very limited attention given to Mexican and Latin American history in U.S. schools. In addition, most Mexicans that immigrated to the U.S. had little or no education, and as a result a very limited knowledge of their own history. Others say that one of the reasons Cinco de Mayo rather than Mexican Independence Day became popular in the United States is that it was easier for Chicano students during the sixties to celebrate in the spring than in the fall. One Latino magazine says that the reasons for the confusion vary. According to the publication, both Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day were once observed by people of Mexican descent in the United States. But because of the 1848 defeat and loss of territory to the Americans, Mexican Independence Day activities also included anti-American demonstrations, including flag burning. The Battle of Puebla, however, memorialized on May 5th did not involve the United States. At the end of the 19th century U.S. politicians decided to put the focus on Cinco de Mayo rather than the War of Independence. The article goes on to say that by diverting attention to a conflict between Mexico and France, anti-American expressions in Mexican-American communities could be suppressed, he said. No matter how you slice it, Cinco de Mayo equals big business from a marketing perspective, especially for U.S. beer companies. It’s no coincidence that marketers went with the easy-to-pronounce Cinco de Mayo instead of a tongue twister like Diez y Seis de Septiembre.

I use to live in a mostly Mexican neighborhood. There were 3 or 4 Whitey-McWhiterson families and we stood out like sore thumbs! We always celebrated Cinco de Mayo, but none of our neighbors did. We thought it was hilarious.
On a side note - our neighbors had THE BEST PARTIES! They use to roast pigs in the backyard and make the most awesomist food, and there were always bunches of people. They were so nice, and I always longed to be part of that family. I'm sure they would have invited us more if we spoke spanish.

Sounds like the people in El Paso when I was a kid, Thyme. Such nice, traditional people. It's too bad so many of the younger generations are not following in their family's traditional cultural values. I wonder what those people think of the new ant-American youth movement? Sad.

Americans could help put a stop to this garbage by not encouraging programs like La Raza in the mis-guided notion that they are being open-armed to these hot headed kids. That Dem lady in the video I posted was clearly uncomfortable about what she found when she had to investigate this program. She really had NO idea what was in it. I have to believe that most people that support this stuff are ill-informed about what they are supporting. La Raza is dead on proof that what you put in the minds of kids matters.

I love the party food! I'll microwave some fresh jalapenos for 5 minutes, cut in half, deseed, fill with Neufchatel cheese, wrap with maple bacon, and bake until yummy enough to eat. I think microwaving rather than boiling, keeps the peppers from getting really super spicy hot. Tried turkey bacon but it just isn't worth the sacrifice. I'll die happy. ;D

Our southwest food is certainly loaded with carbs and fat, but my Mexican friends are trim because they eat so many fruits and vegetables. Very rarely a flour tortilla, always corn. Meat too well marinated and cooked for my taste, but very small portions, which is good. Then lots of different salsas and picos, shredded cabbage often. Beans and rice always. Rarely any cheese but the fresco which isn't high fat. They do eat the crema, which is cream you can practically stand a spoon up in, with fruit, but not often. And, of course, the tres leche cake for special occasions. They just never have a plate full of fat. My stuffed jalapenos are probably about the worst things they eat!

azstarnet.com/news/state-and-regional/article_e6ea1c78-54c4-5b8d-b79c-6a74310d0fb9.htmlRally backs health care for illegal immigrants Associated Press | Posted: Thursday, May 5, 2011 More than 300 doctors and other health professionals from across the country gathered Thursday at the Arizona Capitol to protest the state's anti-illegal immigration law, saying it prevents a vulnerable community from receiving necessary medical care. Jaime Farrant, a policy director with the Border Action Network, said Arizona was fortunate that lawmakers this year failed to pass a proposal that would have made "hospitals into immigration checkpoints." SB1405 would have required hospitals to check the immigration status of patients. Farrant said he fears similar laws would be reintroduced next year. Supporters of such legislation say it saves states millions of dollars in health care services that should only be available to citizens. Opponents at the rally say such laws have no place in the medical community because they overstep their power and interfere with a medical physicians' professional code of ethics. Jason Odhner, a registered nurse in Phoenix, said such laws create fear among illegal immigrants, preventing them from seeking primary medical care _ a situation he calls "a health crisis." "We are sick and tired of the Legislature continuously undermining us," Odhner said. About five busloads of doctors, nurses and other medical professionals came to take part in the rally. Protesters called for a national moratorium on future immigration laws modeled after Arizona's SB1070. "A lot of states that we come from are trying to use Arizona as a model," said Dr. Olveen Carrasquillo, chief of the division of general internal medicine for the University of Miami in Florida. Carrasquillo said the demonstration's purpose was to serve as a statement to lawmakers in other states considering similar laws "to stop the nonsense." A federal appeals court refused last month to lift a stay blocking major part of Arizona's immigration law from taking effect because the federal government is likely to prove the controversial law is unconstitutional. Parts of the law blocked from taking effect while the case works its way through the courts include a provision requiring police to question people's immigration status while enforcing other laws if there is a reasonable suspicion they're in the country illegally. Other provisions that are on hold include: requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers; making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job; and allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without a warrant.
